Chapter 15: The Beginnings of Iron Man's Journey

Happy Holidays Guys! This is part of the Christmas Update! Enjoy...

I do not own Iron Man or Percy Jackson.

Takes place during Iron Man 1

Time: 0:55:33 - 0:59:22

Tony's Age: 26 years old

Percy's Age: 40 mentally, wolf body 4 (thought to be 7 and a half years old--aging slowly)

Tony seemed to finally be done with the boots, at least to his liking, for he had U, another one of his robots made after his parents deaths, recording him experimenting with the flight capabilities of the boots with Dum-E on standby with the fire extinguisher.

I was by Dum-E, prepared to run for Pepper in case Tony needed any medical help because while he was a certified genius, he could be an idiot at times.

I watched Tony stand in the middle of the testing platform with my heart beating madly in my chest and had to refrain myself from pulling his pants until he stumbled off of the pad that would record sensory and environmental input from the boots as they flew.

Laying down in order to restrain myself from outright grabbing Tony, I told my overprotective tendencies that arose since he was kidnapped that this was just like any other time he experimented. That while some things could go wrong, Tony was smart and knew how to make sure his machines didn't impact any sort of malfunction that could end with either of them being hurt.

"Okay, activate hand control," Tony said as he started to prepare himself for possible flight.

"We're gonna start off nice and easy. We're gonna see if 10% thrust capacity achieves lift. And three, two, one," Tony said and pressed the button.

Instantly, I leapt off my feet and went toward Tony who had been thrown into the slanted roof that was nearby as the thrust lift was far too high.

I licked his face and whined as he groaned, and could smell the hurt that he was in and then the annoyance as we were both doused by Dum-E.

I Whined low in my throat and felt Tony set the controls to the side and just pet my head while he closed his eyes and groaned in pain.

Whining, I nudged his shoulder and felt him sigh and slowly start to stand up.

"Cut rolling, U," Tony said as he grabbed his desk in order to steady himself and I was right beside him, ready to catch him should he stumble.

Tony collapsed into his seat and started to fumble off the boots that technically achieved flight for him, but certainly needed to be lowered in thrust capacity.

I set my head on his knee in concern and he graced me with a soft smile. "I'm fine boy," he said as he pet my head slowly with one hand while the other was getting the boots off. "Just a few bruises, and I'm certain I don't have a concussion. I'll be alright, no need for concern."

Huffing and refraining from shaking my head at the disregard he had over his own health, I told myself that if he wasn't going to be concerned, then I would be concerned for him.

With the boots now off, Tony seemed to have that look in his eyes that he was about to go into 'Lab-Mode' as I called it, where the environment around him and his own health took second over his lab work.

Sighing and promising myself that when it got late I would drag him out, I laid beside his desk as he started working on the computer and the coding for the boots to make them more safe and more stabilized for flight.

Between messing on his computer and then the hologram computer for making hand stabilizers for flight (and then him actually building the thing in a rough draft version), I could tell it was past dinner time and debated with myself if I had to get the food for him, or if I would be dragging him upstairs.

I had just about made my mind to drag him upstairs when I perked up as I heard soft clinking steps coming down the steps and entered the laboratory. Pepper was there with coffee and a small wrapped box.

"I've been buzzing you," Pepper said as she set the coffee and package on the table, "did you hear the intercom?"

"Yeah, everything's...What?" Tony asked slightly confused as he wasn't paying much attention to her.

"Obadiah's upstairs," She replied and I felt my lips pull back slightly and a growl entered my throat but I just in time refrained it from leaving.

"Great!" Tony said distractedly while half-paying attention to her.

"What would you like me to tell him?"

"Great. I'll be right up." Tony said as he lifted his rough draft version of the stabilizers from where he built it. "Okay," he said reading himself and testing the weight and if it was staying put together.

"I thought you said you were done making weapons?" Pepper half-questioned as her tone took on a slightly-judgmental tone, but I knew it was because she was thinking that Tony might be going back to his old self.

"It isn't," Tony said as he used the muscles he gained from lifting heavy machines to keep his arm from falling from the weight of the stabilizer. I couldn't help but think that in a suit, it just might be a bit more lighter than without the suit. "This is a flight stabilizer. It's completely harmless."

And just like anyone that was part of my family, he jinxed himself. For as soon as he pressed the button connected with the stabilizer to test it, it blasted him back and seemed to shoot, what seemed like compressed air that could be used as a weapon across the room. "I didn't expect that," Tony added from where he was thrown.

I flinched back as the high whine left the arm and flattened my ears against my head in hopes that the slight ringings in my ears might go down. Until he really fixed the machinery to make them quieter, I knew that this whine-up from the machines was going to be a thing. Sighing and telling myself to get conditioned to it to not flinched, I went upstairs with Pepper to see Obadiah before Tony came up.

Pepper had made herself comfortable on the couch with her tablet and I decided to be right next to her, least I get the compulsion to get closer to the piano where Obadiah was sitting at playing a tune that I didn't recognize, though, given that I knew no one that played the piano that wasn't much of a surprise.

Pepper was focused on her tablet but every so often, her hand that was making plans on it would move toward my head and give it a quick scratch before going back to work while waiting on Tony.

Finally, I heard Tony's footsteps come upstairs from the basement and walked toward Obadiah asking him, "How'd it go?" knowing that there was a board meeting recently that he had come from.

Obie barely looked up to him as Tony made his way toward the table where pizza from New York smelled heavenly from.

"It went that bad, huh?" Tony asked knowing that if Obadiah brought pizza back with him, then it probably didn't go very well.

"Just because I brought pizza back form New York doesn't mean it went bad."

"Huh-uh, sure doesn't. Oh boy," Tony said happily as he grabbed a slice, and needing to push me away knowing that no matter how much I enjoyed it, a dogs-stomach was not the place for pizza.

"It would have gone better if you were there," Obadiah responded still playing the piano.

"Nuh-huh, you told me to lay low. That's what I've been doing," Tony pointed out as he quickly took a bite from the pizza. Realizing he had skipped lunch. "I lay low, and you take care of all-"

Tony paused for a second to swallow and in that time Obadiah jumped into the conversation as he got off the piano. "Hey, come on. In public. The press. This was a board of directors meeting."

"This was--This was a board of directors meeting?" Tony asked but made it sound like he was slightly sarcastic as well, like because if was a board of directors meeting he should've disobeyed Obie's words on laying low.

I rolled by eyes, knowing that even if Obadiah had told Tony about the meeting, Tony wouldn't have gone anyway. Honestly, at this point he should just elect Pepper as the CEO because at least she can handle the stiff dudes in suits that are all about making money and making weapons.

"The board is claiming you have Post-Traumatic Stress. They're filing an injunction."

Granted, that was probably true. The little bouts of sleep Tony gets because I make him are interrupted because he's squirming in bed having nightmares and panic attacks, and the few times he had flashbacks in his Labs were thankfully few as he felt most comfortable there.

"A what?"

"They want to lock you out." Obadiah explained with a slight monotone voice, a felt my hackles raise. There was a part truth there, the locking out seemed to be true. But why did I get such a bad feeling when he said they, like it wasn't fully the board but they were just going along with something.

I felt a hand rest against the hairs that were raised behind my neck and slowly pet there, I looked toward Pepper who was looking at my slightly concerned because of the sudden aggressive posture I was exhibiting.

Making myself relax before Tony, or god forbid Obadiah, sees me tense, I made the hairs go back down and let my head rest on my paws. But I was watching Obadiah, all of his movements and any emotions that might be aiming toward harming Tony in any way.

"They want to lock me out, why, 'cause the stocks dropped 40 points? We knew that was gonna happen," Tony argued looking annoyed at the fact that his own company wanted to lock him out.

I didn't understand that, it was his company, his tech, that made it run in the first place. If they got rid of him, then how were the suppose to make money as it is? They're idiots, plus, Tony could always make a new company that would be better than his old one. Then what? Honestly, locking him out seems like such a terrible, idiotic idea. No wonder they came up with it.

"Fifty-six and a half," Pepper smoothly interjected looking at Tony with a serious expression trying to show him that the number was actually a lot compared what it was before his announcement.

"It doesn't matter, we own the controlling interest in the company."

"Tony, the board has rights, too. They're making the case that you and your new direction isn't in the company's best interest."

I scoffed and sneezed when my mind tried to physically snort at Obie's words. Honestly, Tony was the only reason the company wasn't drowning, they should know by know that most of his ideas aren't idiotic ones. Plus, it was his name that is on all the papers that get signed.

"I'm being responsible! This is a new direction for me, for the company. I mean, me on the company's behalf being responsible for the way that..." Tony looked between the two trying to get some sort of positive, 'I'm happy for your new responsibility' look but was met with disappointed sighs and look from both people in the room. I just moved away from Pepper, feeling slightly annoyed at her, and scooted to rest under Tony's arm in a show of support.

"This is great," Tony said as he stood up, done with the conversation. I instantly followed his movements the were leading him back toward the workshop so he was able to work out the frustration that has built into him from the recent conversation.

"Oh, come on. Tony. Tony."

"I'll be in the shop."

"Hey, hey! Hey, Tony. Listen. I'm trying to turn this thing around, but you gotta give me something. Something to pitch them. Let me have the engineers analyze that. You know, draw up some specs," Obadiah says as he points toward the glowing arc reactor in Tony's chest.

I growled too lowly for human ears and felt the back of my hairs rise again. So this was his play, was he still trying to get the Arc Reactor blueprints. I looked around for anything that might disrupt the conversation if Tony even thought for a second to let Obadiah see the reactor, and spotted the pizza in his hand.

Not the most perfect idea, but if I knock it over and act like I was about to eat it Tony would stop all conversation and get my downstairs. It was something should Tony feel like forgiving Obadiah and showing him the blueprints.

"No, No, absolutely not." Tony argued as he made his way toward the stairs that lead downstairs.

"It'll give me a bone to throw the boys in New York!"

"This one stays with me. That's it, Obie. Forget it,"

"All right, well, this says with me, then. Go on, here, you can have a piece. Take two," Obie says grabbing the pizza box that Tony was going to take with him, but apparently not anymore.

I watched Obadiah's movements carefully, and watched out for any signs of weapons that he might be holding, you never know with him. Especially because my level of trust in him as gone way down since Tony got back from Afghanistan.

"Thank you, "Tony sarcastically said as he grabbed the two slices and went down the stairs. While I would hate to leave Pepper with Obie, I knew he wasn't going to do anything to her. Not when she's not a large problem for him yet. Right now my side belonged to Tony and making sure he doesn't do anything stupid.

"Mind if I come down there and see what you're doing?" Obie tried once more as we were halfway down the stairs.

"Good night, Obie," Tony replied.

I could hear the hint of exhaustion that came with his response and felt concern. Maybe, if I get him to go to bed soon, he would get somewhat of a decent sleep before the nightmares came.

With that in mind, I allowed him to play around in his workshop for a hour before dragging him to his room. Though, he only got three hours of sleep before being woken up and heading back downstairs to work on his project more.

At least he got some sort of sleep, and I can try again in a few hours when it would still dark out, maybe he might get a few more hours of sleep and might be able to call it a slightly restful night because of the how long he spent sleeping.

Dislodging the thoughts for now, I allowed Tony to work through his nightmare filled brain as I rested and allowed my overactive brain to settle down. Nothing will happen to Tony right now, we're safe in his workshop and I'm right there beside him to protect him. With that, I allowed myself to fall into a light sleep, wishing I could give it to Tony who seemed like he needed it more.
