Chapter 28: Goblin King 9-2-16

"Get up!" Boromir shouted, "All of you!"

Aragorn and Legolas woke up with a start. Aragorn nudged Gimli hard and he also woke up. Boromir ran over to Merry and Pippin who were still fast asleep.

"Wake up! Wake up!" Boromir said and pulled at Merry and Pippin's arms.

They both awake at once and Boromir pulled them close to his body. The crack in the floor spread, separating Boromir and the Hobbits from the others on the other side of the cave. The entrance was also blocked by snow and rocks that had collapsed in the process. They were trapped.

"What's going on?" Pippin asked sleepily.

Suddenly, the ground collapsed beneath everyone's feet. The Fellowship fell and the air was filled with some of their surprised screams. They kept falling and falling. After a short time they all fell into a cage type structure underground.

Gimli fell first and hit the bottom of the cage on his back. Then fell Boromir with the Hobbits who were still grasping hold on him tightly. Last came Aragorn and then Legolas who landed on his feet first on top of everybody else.

Before anybody could get weapons out, a whole group of a hundred small and ugly goblins came running their way. They started crawling all over their new prisoners. Merry and Pippin were grabbed first and were taken away easily. The others fought back with their hands, but it was only four against hundreds and they also got taken away and were to follow the Hobbits. The goblins made lots of howling and laughing noises from deep in their throats that were loud and made the companions nervous and uncomfortable.

Suddenly they all heard another noise. It was the sound of the booming king Goblin who sat atop his throne. The Fellowship came to a stop in front of the beast. Aragorn had heard of the tales of Goblins living in mountains and knew that it was true, but he had never thought them to be living in this mountain. Goblins main goal was to kill, which made him nervous.

"Who would be so bold as to come armed into my kingdom?!" the goblin king shouted, "Intruders, assassins, thieves?!"

Nobody spoke as they all stared at the giant ugly king goblin. It was naked but a large loin cloth and it had dangling skin in most places, especially under its large chin. It also had big yellow teeth and small ears. None of the companions had ever encountered a goblin as big and ugly as he.

"Two men, an elf prince, a dwarf, and two Halflings? What brings you here?" the goblin king boomed, "Speak!"

Still nobody said anything and the Hobbits looked to Aragorn. The silence however upseted the king.

"We start with the youngest!" he looked at Pippin, "Step forward,"

Pippin's eyes bulged and he looked to Merry who was limp standing next to him. Some goblins pushed Pippin forward. He looked fearfully up at the goblin king as he shook. Partly from fear and partly because he was still cold from the snow outside.

"Now... tell me, why you and your odd set of companions have come into my territory?" the goblin king asked.

"We- we are- looking for... someone," Pippin stammered.

"Don't play tricks on me! I'll make somebody tell the truth!" the king bellowed.

Without warning the king reached for Pippin with his enormous hand, but Pippin dodged it and fell to the ground flat. The goblin king growled and then reached again and before Pippin could get up, he grabbed him. He gasped as the king squeezed him in his huge hand. Only his head and feet were showing from the top and bottom of the king's hand.

"Pippin!" Merry called out.

The king turned to Merry and smiled,

"I know somebody would talk,"

It was then that everybody noticed a huge area of thin frozen water next to the king's throne. The king put his hand with Pippin over it.

"I've heard Halfling's have trouble swimming," he said.

Suddenly the goblins hand went limp and Pippin fell through the cold water. He cracked through the icy layer on top and plunged into the water below.

"He can't swim! Get him out!" Merry yelled.

"Speak and I will!" the king said in response.

Merry looked desperately to Aragorn in a panic.

Inside the ice water, Pippin didn't know if he was going to die of no air or how cold he was. It felt like the icy water was eating him. At the same time, his lungs burned as they filled with water. He tried kicking his legs and flailing his arms, but he was too cold to move.

Aragorn spoke fast,

"We are looking for one of our lost companions. We lost him while going over the mountain, we had no idea this was goblin territory,"

"Who were you looking for?" the goblin asked in no hurry, which made Merry move frantically around even more.

"He is a Hobbit dear to us," Aragorn explained thinking fast, "We have answered enough. Let him up!"

"Fine,"

The goblin king reached into the cold water and pulled out Pippin whom was dripping wet. He was pale white as a ghost and hung limp in the goblins long chubby fingers. Merry gasped.

"And this is what happens when you don't listen... and LIE!" the king threw Pippin across the room to were the companions stood. Legolas caught his wet and cold body effortlessly. Merry tried to get a better view, but the other goblins were holding him back.

"Bring them to the dungeons! We will talk again tomorrow and maybe they will tell the truth, but if not... somebody dies!" the king boomed loudly. He kept on talking and Aragorn saw his chance and ignored the goblin.

"Put him down, Legolas," he whispered.

Legolas obeyed and laid Pippin down on the ground onto his back.

"Is he alive? He's colorless," Boromir asked trying also to get a better view of him.

Aragorn didn't answer. He kneeled down on the ground and put his mouth to Pippin's. He breathed air into him and then pushed down onto his chest. Aragorn continued this multiple times, but nothing happened. The king was still rambling on, so Aragorn kept trying. Nothing...
