Chapter 27: Cave 8-30-16

Aragorn, Boromir, Legolas, Gimli, Merry, and Pippin had all made it to the base of the snowy mountain. Shadowfax was there too which told the companions Gandalf and Sam went over the mountain.

"Alright, time to go up," said Aragorn, "This is the mountain, right Pippin,"

Pippin nodded.

"I just can't figure out why Frodo would go over the mountain. Mordor is completely south from here," Aragorn said confused.

"Maybe he didn't know," Pippin said.

Nobody responded and Aragorn started leading everybody up the mountain. It was still dark out and colder than ever. Boromir lifted Merry in one arm and Pippin in the other and then followed the troop up the mountain. He was the caboose bringing up the end. It started snowing suddenly and the winds started picking up. Merry and Pippin's teeth chattered and they remembered the time they tried crossing Caradhras so long time ago.

Aragorn still lead on the Fellowship and looked ahead for any sign of a quick shelter. Legolas eventually went ahead a ways and reported a cave about a half mile through. He was able to walk on top of the snow, giving him that head start.

"I sense something on the air," Legolas whispered to Aragorn.

"Frodo?" Aragorn asked hopefully.

"No... I'm not sure what, it's strange,"

With that, they kept going. They decided they would take a break in the cave up ahead for the Hobbits sakes.

"Are we almost there?" shouted Boromir over the loud winds.

Merry and Pippin ducked their faces into Boromir's fuzzy coat sides so they could thaw their frozen faces.

"Almost! About 10 more feet," Legolas said.

"Good! Because I'm about frozen!" Gimli mumbled loudly and spat out snow that had caught in his mouth.

They kept going and going through the snow. Behind them, there trail was already getting covered by the rapid fall of the snow and the gushes of wind. Gimli was up to his chest in snow making Boromir slow down behind him. He got a better grip on Merry and Pippin and hoisted them more upwards to get them out of the snow pilling up on them and himself.

Finally, they made it to the cave. Aragorn and Legolas went inside first and then were followed by Gimli and Boromir with the Hobbits. As they all entered the cave, they could all feel their faces thaw out a little from the sudden warmth. Boromir set down Pippin and he slowly shook off all the snow that had collected on him as he shivered. Boromir lead him to the far corner of the small cave and set Merry down in the corner. Pippin sat down next to him.

"Keep warm," Boromir instructed and then brushed off all the snow on himself.

Merry and Pippin nodded slowly as they shivered through with chattering teeth. Meanwhile, on the other side of the cave, Aragorn and Legolas were conversing.

"Ever since we have come in here, the feeling has gotten stronger," Legolas explained.

"Is it a bad feeling?" Aragorn asked.

"Yes. I fear if we stay... we will be in trouble,"

Boromir walked over and joined the conversation,

"We can't go now. That," Boromir gestured to the outside snow, "will be the death of the Hobbits,"

Legolas narrowed his eyes at him and argued politely,

"I understand, but we are in trouble here too,"

"I think we all need some rest," Aragorn put in before Boromir could say anything else, as it looked like he might.

"I can take the first watch," suggested Boromir.

Aragorn nodded. Legolas made a face of uncertainly, but went with it. Everybody split up and sat in their own areas in the cave.

Gimli was still trying to get all the snow off of his heavy gear, but as he finished he dozed off. The companions were all split up amongst the small square cave. Boromir decided to sit nearest to Merry and Pippin, but not too close. They were both on their backs snuggled up next to one another trying to stay warm like Boromir had said. Eventually, everybody fell asleep, but Boromir as he was on watch.

Gimli started snoring loudly and it echoed against the cold stone walls of the cave. The wind from outside was also making a swirling whooshing sound. Boromir could not see the faces of Aragorn or Legolas, but they were sleeping it appeared.

Then his attention went to Merry and Pippin again. They were both sleeping peacefully and were motionless. Then he heard a new sound. It was a whistle noise that also bounced on and off the cave walls. At first Boromir thought it was the wind, but he soon found out that the noise was coming from Pippin. He wasn't snoring, but whistling in his sleep. It wasn't just a long drown out whistle, but had different tones and tempos to it. It almost sounded like the wind outside was coming from his mouth.

So there Boromir sat, listening to Gimli snoring, the wind whoosh outside, and Pippin's whistling. All was peaceful until he heard yet another sound, but this sound was pleasant at all. It was the sound of cracking stone. Boromir jolted upright and saw that it was coming from the floor. The stone rock floor was cracking open, looking almost like an earthquake.

A/N: Another fun fact: I put Pip doing the whistling thing in the story because in real life Billy Boyd doesn't snore, he whistles. He says its his one bad habit, but i think it is unique and cool! :-D
