Chapter 25: Split Up Again 8-26-16

Frodo and Pippin were still riding Shadowfax away. They had reached an area with a large snowy mountain. Frodo "Whoaed" to the horse which meant to stop, but the horse did not. She was about to stop like Frodo had ordered, but instead her ears twitched and she made a sharp turn going back the way they had come.

Both Hobbits gasped and to Frodo's surprise, he found himself flying off the horse, but Pippin grabbed his hand just in time. Pippin had one arm around Shadowfax's neck and the other holding Frodo as he dangled in the air.

As Shadowfax ran at top speed, Pippin and Frodo struggled to hold on to each other's hands. Frodo was almost touching the ground, but still dangled in mid air at the horse's side awkwardly.

"You're slipping!" Pippin cried, "Whoa! Stop horse! Stop!"

"Just let me fall!" Frodo called back.

"No! You would get hurt! Maybe she is bringing us to Gandalf," Pippin suggested.

"Let me go, its okay!" Frodo shouted as loud as he could against the strong winds.

"We are going fast!" Pippin continued, "Just hold on a little longer,"

Frodo felt like his arm was going to snap off since he was being pulled by it with lots of force.

"Bye, Pippin. Make sure Sam is okay for me," Frodo said.

"What?"

Frodo shook his hand out of Pippin's and went flying backwards at top speed off of Shadowfax.

"No!" Pippin cried.

At the weight of Frodo holding Pippin down, he also went flying sideways. Before he could fall off however, he grabbed the mane of Shadowfax with his one good hand and then wrapped his legs and other arm around her neck. As Shadowfax ran, Pippin was not on top of her neck, but underneath her neck holding on. If he let go, he would surely get trampled badly. She was going super fast and Pippin just had to hold on as tight as he could. She ran and ran.

Suddenly, Shadowfax came to an abrupt stop and Pippin fell forward landing on his back hard on the ground. He thought he heard somebody call his name, but wasn't sure because as he looked up and saw the horse on her back two legs in the air above him "neighing". He screamed as she was about to come back down and crush him, but he was seized from behind by his shirt and pulled back with lots of force.

He gasped as Shadowfax came down again barley missing him. Pippin then realized he was at some body's feet. He looked up and not realizing it at first was... Aragorn!

"Aragorn!" Pippin shouted happily.

Still on the ground he saw Legolas and Gimli on the left side of Aragorn and to his left was Boromir, Sam, and... Merry!

"Merry!" Pippin called out, "Sam!"

He scrambled to his feet and ran over to his fellow Hobbit friends.

"Pippin! Your okay!" Merry cried smiling brightly down at Pippin.

Sam smiled and hugged Pippin briefly as Boromir sat Merry down on the ground. Pippin kneeled down and hugged him. Pippin looked up to Boromir and smiled. He returned the smile and nodded.

"Peregrin Took!" Pippin heard from behind him. He turned to Gandalf looking down at him like the owner of a bad dog, "Where is Frodo?"

Oh no, he wasn't going to like this, Pippin thought. Then he spoke,

"We were riding the horse and all of a sudden she turned and Frodo fell off. I caught him, but then..." he trailed off and didn't continue.

"Then what?" Gandalf urged.

Sam was also listening intently and fearfully.

"He fell," Pippin finished.

"What?!" Aragorn asked.

Where?! Is he okay?!" Sam pushed,

"You mean you let go of him?" Gandalf boomed.

Pippin shook his head,

"No Gandalf, he let go of me..."

"Where did he fall?"

"We were by a huge snowy mountain,"

"Why did you guys go east and not southeast?" Gandalf boomed angrily.

"You only told us to get away! Besides we couldn't control the horse," Pippin said.

Gandalf huffed a big sigh and walked away. Sam covered his face in his hands. Pippin glanced over at the cave he had saved Frodo from. Then he did a double take and saw a body lying on the ground. It was quite an alarming sight.

"What's that?" Pippin asked.

"Dead body of Saruman lad," Gimli said.

"How did he die?" Pippin asked.

Nobody answered and then Boromir spoke up,

"I killed him," he confessed.

"What?!" all three Hobbits asked at once confused.

Boromir nodded and continued,

"He said you were dead," he gestured to Pippin, "he said he killed you,"

Pippin thought back to when Gandalf had saved him.

"Yes, well, he almost did... but Gandalf saved me at the last possible second," Pippin explained.

"Are you okay?" Merry asked looking him over.

"Yah,"

Aragorn walked over to Gandalf and said,

"The Fellowship has been rejoined, but by one. We must go after Frodo,"

"Agreed and how do you suppose we do that? We have but one horse," Gandalf sighed, "Frodo may not even be alive,"

They were silent for a moment and then Aragorn whispered,

"What does your heart tell you?"

Gandalf thought for a moment and then replied,

"That he is alive,"

"Good. We must go after him then. You go ahead as the others and I follow behind on foot," Aragorn suggested.

Gandalf nodded and said,

"So be it,"

Aragorn nodded and watched Gandalf climb on top of Shadowfax. Aragorn turned around and saw Sam.

"Please, Mr. Gandalf sir, can I come too?" Sam asked looking back and forth between Gandalf and Aragorn, "Remember, I made that promise. Remember? Back in the Shire,"

Gandalf nodded. Aragorn lifted Sam onto Shadowfax in front of Gandalf and then handed him his backpack.

"Thank you," Sam said.

Aragorn smiled and backed up to watch them leave.

"Wait, Aragorn," Gandalf said suddenly, "Take this. It if from Frodo,"

Gandalf reached into one of his pockets and pulled out the key that Frodo had given him and handed down to Aragorn.

"The second key," Aragorn whispered, "But how did he know,"

"Hobbits quite are amazing creatures," was all Gandalf said and then Sam and himself rode away to find Frodo.
