Chapter 24: Battle at the River 8-20-16
Gandalf watched Shadowfax gallop away with Frodo and Pippin. Gandalf looked to the key that was left in his hands that Frodo had given him. Tucking it away, he looked up to see the orcs and Saruman on a horse leading the way.
"Halt!" Saruman ordered to the orcs, "Look what we have here, Gandalf,"
Gandalf started at Saruman from the ground and picked his words wisely,
"Saruman the White, what brings you here?"
Saruman scowled and then answered with,
"Don't play tricks with me! You know perfectly well what brings me here,"
Gandalf spotted Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Sam, and Merry behind Saruman. They all looked at him with the same face when Frodo and Pippin had when they had first seen him.
"Give my companions back," Gandalf said calmly.
"Even if I did so, you would still be overly outnumbered,"
Gandalf grunted and looked to the west behind Saruman's armies.
"Oh, am I know?" Gandalf asked with a smirk.
Everybody turned around to a whole herd of horses with Rohan riders aboard. They were all armed and crossing the river over to the Brown Lands.
"Attack!" Saruman shouted.
All the orcs turned around and started running towards the Rohan riders. The Fellowship was left standing there awkwardly with their hands still bound. Out of nowhere, Saruman turned abruptly and shot something at Gandalf through his staff. Yet Gandalf was ready and reflected the blast with his own new and improved staff. Saruman jumped off his horse and the wizards started chanting magic and fighting against one another.
A/N: I drew this sketch of the wizards, but it was too hard to color. And yes, i know their faces are blank, lol! :-D
Aragorn found all of their weapons and started cutting himself and the others free from the bounds around their wrists. The orc that had been carrying them must have been carless and dropped them all. Now that everybody was free, they could fight.
"Aragorn! What should I do with him?" Boromir called to Aragorn gesturing to Merry.
"Go put him somewhere safe and have Sam stay with him," Aragorn responded.
Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli ran to go catch up to the battle of orcs and men at the river. Boromir lead Sam away from the battle and behind the hill with the cave. He set Merry down and said,
"Stay here, both of you. Sam, watch him,"
Sam nodded and then Boromir ran off to go join the battle as well. The battle over the river was difficult because people kept falling in and then getting taken by the river. Aragorn recognized Eomer fighting as well and Eomer recognized him.
"Did you ever find your friends?" Eomer asked as he stabbed an orc in the gut.
"We have two," Aragorn responded and slicing an orc across the chest and the turning around and stabbing another.
"Best of luck finding the others," Eomer said.
Aragorn smiled and nodded as he kept slashing through the troops of orcs.
"It feels great to fight again!" Gimli yelled out to Legolas in particular, "What are you on?"
"I'm on 17!" Legolas shouted back and then shot some more with this bow.
"What? I'll have no pointy eared elf outscoring me!" Gimli said and crushed another orc with his axe.
The battle went on and on. It seemed as though the orcs were winning, but not by much. Boromir fought hard with all his might slashing and taking the orcs down out of anger and frustration.
Gandalf and Saruman were still going at it with each other, but nobody had gotten hurt... yet anyway. Merry and Sam were still protected behind the hill. Sam was standing watching all the action play out before his eyes. Merry sat on the ground watching too. The rain started picking up and it was now pouring. Merry was still only wearing his thin white button up shirt and was freezing.
"Sam? Could I have my clothes please?" Merry asked through chattering teeth.
Sam looked back at him and murmured,
"Sure,"
He took off his backpack and took out the rest of Merry's tops, cape, and his leaf clip. Then he handed the neatly folded stack to Merry. He slipped on his yellow vest and green jacket. Then he fastened his cape as he pinned the elven leaf clip to the front. He felt warmer already and was happy to have dry clothes for the time being.
He snuggled up into his cape trying to keep warm. If Pippin where here, Merry thought, we could keep each other warm. Where are you Pip? Just thinking about his friend made him feel warmer a little, but made his heart feel different and cold about the thought of Pippin and where he might be or if Saruman had really told the truth about him. Merry didn't know what to believe anymore.
The number of orcs were rapidly decreasing, but so where the Rohan riders. Soon the battle was nearly over and only a couple of orcs remained.
"Your forces are gone, Saruman!" Gandalf shouted, "Stop at once, you have lost!"
"Not yet!" Saruman shouted back.
Suddenly he gave extra power to his staff and it made Gandalf fly backwards and skid across the ground. Just as Saruman was about to give off the final blow onto Gandalf, Boromir ran up from behind him. Out of nowhere, Boromir stabbed Saruman in the back.
"That's for capturing us!"
Then he stabbed him again.
"That's for lying to us!"
And again.
"And that's for harming the Hobbits!"
With each stab Saruman gave an inward gasping noise. Then he fell to the ground in a heap. Gandalf stood up and started at the now dead wizard and then back to Boromir. Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli came running over and also started the sight of it.
Boromir took his sword out of Saruman's back and then stood there awkwardly. Nobody knew what to say or do. Boromir sheathed his sword and finally walked away. He went behind the cave hill to make sure Sam and Merry were all right.
"What happened over there?" Sam asked as soon as he saw Boromir's upset face.
Boromir just shook his head and lifted Merry.
"Let's go. We have to keep moving,"
Sam slung his backpack over his shoulder and followed Boromir back around the hill. The remaining Rohan riders where talking to Gandalf as they came around the corner. Eomer called something out to his men and they all rode away the way they had come.
Sam gasped as he saw the body of Saruman face down on the ground.
"What happened?" he asked startled from the sight.
"Are work here is done," Gandalf said ignoring the question, "I have sent Frodo and Pippin away,"
"Frodo?!" Sam almost shouted.
"Pippin?!" Merry exclaimed, "He's alive?!'
"Where are they?" the Hobbits asked at the same time.
"I sent them away about a minute before you got here," Gandalf said, "They rode my horse, Shadowfax away. I will just call her back and they will come,"
The Fellowship all were excited and had anxious looks on their faces. Gandalf turned in the direction Shadowfax had run with Frodo and Pippin and whistled. A long and echoing sound that caught the air and traveled for many miles.
A/N: Anybody expecting that? :)
