Chapter 21: Leaving 8-17-16

Pippin devoured the food Eowyn had brought back which consisted of bacon, toast, eggs, and water. Eowyn was surprised by how fast he ate it all. She also had gone back and forth six different times for refills of water for him. She couldn't figure out or if he had been more hungry or thirsty.

They talked for hours and about random things. Pippin now trusted her and Eowyn now understood why Gandalf had made the comment about how he liked to talk a lot. But she was okay with it and happy to have a conversation with him. They were having a conversation when suddenly the door flung open and Gandalf rushed inside.

"Peregrin Took my lad, you have information I need," he boomed and rushed to the bedside.

"What?" Pippin asked confused by his abruptness. He leaned over as Gandalf took off the bandage on his head.

"You were in Orthanc when Saruman told his plans, right?" Gandalf asked.

"Yes, if Orthanc is that black tower,"

"Yes it is. Now speak his plan," Gandalf said with more urgently.

Pippin thought back to when Saruman had spilled his own plan out to the Fellowship before he had escaped.

"Speak!" Gandalf insisted.

"Well, he said Frodo and the gang of orcs he was with was going to stop at a secret cave and wait there until the rest of the orcs and Saruman came. And then once he was there, at the cave, then they would all proceed to Mordor. So you see..."

"Where is the secret cave?" Gandalf interrupted.

"Um..."

"Speak Peregrin Took! We don't have all day!"

Pippin bit his lip.

"Gandalf, he doesn't know," Eowyn stated calmly.

Gandalf grunted and murmured something under his breath.

"I have something else to say, while I remember the cave location," Pippin said.

"What?" asked Gandalf dully.

"When I was in Fangorn escaping the orcs there was this thing that attacked me,"

Gandalf sat quietly and looked interested, so Pippin continued,

"Its name was Gollum,"

Gandalf nodded,

"What did he say to you?"

"He asked me about Frodo,"

"What did you tell him?"

"Nothing,"

"Good,"

Pippin sat there confused. He was hoping for some explanation on whom that creature was, but Gandalf stayed quiet.

"When he remembers the name of the cave please bring him to me," Gandalf finally said and stood up.

"Understood," Eowyn responded.

Gandalf headed towards the door, but before he could reach it Pippin remembered.

"The Brown Lands," he whispered, "The Brown Lands! That's what he said! The Brown Lands!" Pippin said louder.

Gandalf walked back over to the bed and placed a hand on Pippin's shoulder and said,

"How many orcs where with Frodo?"

"No more than 100 I suppose,"

"Luck and hope is on our said. We need to leave now,"

"Now?" Eowyn and Pippin said in unison.

"Yes, now. Rohan is in the middle of The Brown Lands and Isengard. If Saruman hasn't left yet, we can make it to Frodo first," Gandalf explained.

"How do you expect to fight all those orcs on your own? And what if Saruman's armies are already there? It will be two against thousands! And I can't fight! I don't even have a sword. We will be outnumbered and alone," Pippin said.

"Whoever said we would be alone?" Gandalf said. He had a keen gleam look in his eye that made Pippin rethink his thoughts. Then Gandalf turned to Eowyn and said, "Thank you for all your help my lady,"

"You're most welcome, be safe,"

Then she waved to Pippin and Pippin waved back. Then she was gone and left the room leaving Pippin to look at Gandalf. Gandalf stepped closer to Pippin and held out something black.

"Here, put this on," Gandalf said handing the object to Pippin.

"What is it?" Pippin asked taking it.

"Put it over your hand. It will act as a shield to it," Gandalf explained.

Pippin took the white bandage off his hand that had been stabbed by the orc and then slipped on the black hand gear. It was almost like a thick glove and a cast combined. It started at the middle of his fingers and at the bottom of his wrist.

"When do you suppose we will get the others back?" Pippin asked. Gandalf didn't answer, so Pippin went on, "You know Merry, Sam, Bor..."

"Yes, yes I know. It all depends on where they are or if they are still alive,"

"They are,"

"Are what, alive?"

"Yah, I was with them when Saruman said they were going with him,"

Gandalf shook his head,

"Never believe Saruman. He was once a good wizard and now look at him. He betrayed us all,"

Pippin hadn't realized that. He had always thought Saruman was always a villain of Middle Earth. Gandalf stood up and walked to the door.

"Come along young Peregrin Took, we have a long ways to go,"

Pippin took the last sip from his water cup and slipped out of bed. He felt much better and normal again. Pippin followed Gandalf out of the room, out of the palace, and finally outside to the horse stables out back. It was about mid- day, but the clouds where covering the sun and the sky was dark and threatening a storm of rain.

"Gandalf, how long is it to get to the Brown Lands?" Pippin asked as Gandalf lifted him onto his horse.

The horse was beautiful with a soft coat of creamy white. She was also the biggest horse Pippin had ever encountered and had no saddle.

"About two day's time," Gandalf responded.

Pippin made a face knowing that the next couple days were going to be boring. Gandalf climbed aboard his horse and said,

"Shadowfax, show us the meaning of hast,"

Withthat, Shadowfax, the horse, took off running at top speed out of the horsestables. She ran and ran out of Rohan and into West Emmet and by the time nightfell, Pippin was already fast asleep.

A/N: Here is a picture of Middle Earth I drew so you guys would know where the Brown Lands are. This way you can look at the map and figure out Saruman's plan visually. If you have any questions, please ask! :-D
