Chapter 17: A Needle and Thread 8-8-16
Aragorn, Legolas, Boromir, Gimli, Sam, and Merry were all in the dungeon underneath Orthanc. Boromir, Sam, and Merry were in the first cell to the left and Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli were in the first cell to the right. There was a torch outside the doors so everybody could see pretty well as they sat in their cells. They were all quiet until Sam spoke up and realized something,
"Where did that Gollum go?"
"Who?" Merry asked.
"What happened?" asked Boromir.
Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli's memories snapped back into motion again at the thought of that creature.
"He snuck off I guess. We should have never trusted him," Aragorn said ashamedly.
"What are you talking about? You saw that thing?" Boromir asked trying to get clarification.
"We found him in one of these cells earlier and I let him go," Aragorn admitted.
"Are you insane?!" Boromir nearly shouted, "You let that thing go, but you refuse to go to Gondor?"
"Do you think he found a way out of Isengard?" Sam asked.
"I hope not. His main target would be Pippin and it would all be up to him to keep Frodo a secret," Boromir said.
Aragorn didn't answer and Boromir just sighed and grunted. Sam was in the far corner of the cell farthest away from the cell door. He was thinking about Frodo again and about how much he missed him and how he longed he could be at his side right now; even if he was in a bad situation. Boromir sat closest to the cell door with Merry next to him. Merry was stuffed in-between the corner of the cell and Boromir's side dozing off.
"Boromir," Aragorn whispered.
Boromir looked over to Aragorn with an annoyed and angry expression on his face.
"Is he asleep?" Aragorn asked.
Boromir looked at Merry and then back to Aragorn and nodded.
"I need you to give him stitches," Aragorn whispered softly.
"Now!? You are insane!" Boromir blurted out loudly.
"Shh!" Aragorn replied quickly, "Yes, it's our only chance. Go through Sam's backpack and find something. It's either now or never,"
"Fine," Boromir whispered back.
Boromir rested Merry's sleeping head onto the wall and crawled over to Sam. He felt awkward doing so with his bound hands.
"Turn around," Boromir whispered to Sam.
"Why?" asked Sam suspiciously. He had been trying to get some sleep as well.
"I need to get something out of your backpack so I can stitch his leg up,"
Sam gave a look of concern and then turned around slowly so Boromir could get inside his pack. Boromir found a loose brown string from the backpack and snapped it off clean. He hoped it was long enough. He then searched through some more and found Merry's leaf clip that the whole Fellowship had been given back in Lothlorien. He turned it over in his hands and found that there was a needle keeping it in place in the back. He was about to break it off, but stopped. He couldn't break Merry's. He set down Merry's clip back into the bag and took his own leaf clip off of himself. He snapped the needle off on the back and then placed his now broken leaf clip also in Sam's backpack.
"Alright, I'm done," Boromir whispered to Sam.
Sam turned back around and watched Boromir crawl back over to Merry. Boromir put the string through the needle and then put it in his mouth. He sat in front of Merry and rolled his pant leg up. Then he took off the elven healing cloth. Merry's leg looked a lot better and it was probably from the power of the elven cloth. There was no more blood and only the opening of the gash was waiting to be stitched up.
Boromir glanced over at Aragorn in the other cell. Legolas and Gimli could not be seen, but Aragorn was watching intently wishing he was the one to help. Boromir took the needle out of his mouth and shakily put it to Merry's leg. He took a deep breath and then started weaving back and forth through the gash.
He had only done this once before on his younger brother, Faramir. While he had been in battle he had cut his shoulder pretty deep from an orc. When both brothers made it back to Minis Tirith, Boromir was instructed to stitch up Faramir's shoulder.
As Boromir weaved in and out Merry never flinched one bit as he sat there fast asleep. Merry's leg had about a three inch gash from the stab mark it had left, so it didn't take long. Boromir was done in no time and he had, had just the right amount of thread. Boromir put the needle back into his pocket and then felt the stitches he had made on Merry's leg.
He glanced at Aragorn again and he was still watching intently. Boromir hoped the stitching would stay for the time being since it was only a thin string. He rolled back down Merry's pants and then sat down next to him again. He put his head to his knees and closed his eyes.
"Thank you," Aragorn whispered through his cell to Boromir.
Boromir lifted his head and looked to Aragorn and nodded.
"Hopefully he will be alright now," he added.
"I meant thank you for joining us again," Aragorn said.
Boromir could feel his face turning red and he gave a shy smile as he looked away from Aragorn. He was glad he was back too, but didn't want to admit it out in the open.
"I just hope Pippin could find a way to help us out of here," Boromir finally said without too much confidence, "Maybe he found a way back into Orthanc and can steal the keys to get us out,"
"As do I, but don't get ahead of yourself. But your right, there is always hope," Aragorn said.
