Chapter 13: The Plan 8-3-16

Aragorn took out the riddle and read it out loud for everybody to hear,

"Built from four pillars of unbreakable black rock as it stands 500 feet high touching the sky, has the Rohirum name of 'the cunning mind' but was deserted by mankind. So go down deep, deep into the cells and you will find it, but do not tell,"

He looked up to see everybody's expressions. Boromir and Gimli were still processing the information, Sam thought he got it, but actually didn't, Pippin was confused, but Legolas nodded and said,

"Makes perfect sense,"

"If Saruman intends to bring Frodo and the Ring to Mordor, he will probably go tomorrow morning with all of his orcs," Aragorn explained.

"We are going after him right?" Sam asked for clarification.

"Of course," Aragorn said, "We will wait until they all leave and then we will give a quick look around for the key. By the time we leave, we will have a good distance apart from Sarumon and his troops,"

Everybody nodded and tried letting all this new and sudden information soak in.

"Wait... what is the key for?" Pippin asked. It had been the same question on everybody else's mind too.

Aragorn and Legolas explained the whole situation about the secret entrance into Mordor and how maybe it could help them. They might as well get the key if they are already at a land mark they thought. Once everybody was on the same track of understandment Aragorn said,

"Again, we shall wait until everybody is gone and then we can enter,"

"Where should we hide?" asked Pippin.

Before Aragorn could respond, Boromir said,

"We could go in there," he looked to a nearby forest. He would have pointed, but he was still holding Merry.

"But that's Fangorn. Are you trying to kill us?" Gimli asked grumpily. He started walking briskly over to Boromir but Aragorn put a hand up to stop him. He stopped, but huffed in frustration.

"We have no other choice," Boromir went on.

It was silent for a moment until Aragorn agreed. The remains of the Fellowship headed for Fangorn. Boromir was at the front of the line still holding Merry in his arms. Pippin stayed close to him to make sure nothing happened to his friend. Gimli walked behind him and then Sam. Aragorn was at the caboose and Legolas, who had been in front of him, slowed down to his pace and walked along side Aragorn. The two horses walked along side Aragorn too.

"I don't trust him," Legolas whispered.

Sam was just up ahead a little ways and was listening to their quiet talk.

"There's nothing we can do right now, but keep our eyes on him," Aragorn whispered back.

Legolas nodded and they kept walking. Soon they arrived at the forest, Fangorn. Boromir set Merry down against a tree truck. Pippin sat down next to him. Legolas scanned the area as Gimli sat down on a rock to rest. Aragorn and Sam came over to join Merry, Pippin, and Boromir.

"What should we do about that?" Pippin asked pointing at Merry's upper thigh. The blanket that he had wrapped around his leg was already soaked in his own blood.

"I will take it off and clean it," Aragorn said and kneeled down next to the Hobbits and Boromir. Pippin nodded.

Aragorn slowly unraveled the bandage around Merry's leg. As soon as the bandage was off, Aragorn started feeling around in the area of the wound. He was mostly looking for a broken bone or a torn muscle. Merry started to wake up to that. He opened his eyes slowly and gasped as he saw Aragorn over him. He tried sitting up more forgetting about his leg, but stopped and made a noise out of pain.

"Oww. Oww. Oww!" he whispered.

"Shhh..." Pippin whispered and tried leaning him back onto the tree again slowly.

"How did you get here?" Merry asked Aragorn as he tried smiling.

"Lay still," Aragorn said, "I have to clean it,"

Merry gulped and nodded without another word. Pippin grabbed one of Merry's hands and held it in his own. Merry clenched his teeth and squeezed Pippin's hand as Aragorn put some water on Merry's cut. Aragon wiped the gash with a cloth washing off all the blood. Merry and Pippin both looked away from the sight of it.

Aragorn glanced at Boromir with a worried expression as he wiped the wounded area. Boromir returned the worried look back. Sam saw it and asked,

"What? Is something wrong?"

Aragorn looked back at Merry's leg and then to Sam and said gently,

"It's a deep cut,"

Merry and Pippin looked back to Aragorn with worried expressions.

"What are you saying?" Merry asked.

"Is his leg going to fall off!?" Pippin blurted out without thinking.

Aragorn smiled, shook his head, and said,

"No, no. It's not going to fall off,"

The Hobbits let out a sigh of relief.

"I can't be sure, but it looks like the dagger that was used to pierce you, almost went through your whole leg,"

All the Hobbits gasped loudly.

"You were lucky though," Aragorn continued, "because your femur bone doesn't appear to feel broken or scratched at all,"

Everybody sat there looking at Merry.

"What?" he finally said.

"You're going to need stitches," Aragorn said calmly.

"Stitches!" Merry and Pippin shouted at the same time, "But what about Frodo and the Ring?" Merry asked.

"Shhh..." Aragorn said, "We have a plan already. Right now you two need to rest,"

Aragorn handed Merry and Pippin a pack of Lembas Bread each and a water canteen. They were very hungry and tired, so rest wasn't a bad idea. Pippin leaned against the tree next to Merry. Aragorn got up and said,

"Stay here with Boromir. I will be right back," the he walked away towards Legolas.

Sam didn't like the idea of staying behind with Boromir, but he had no choice. He sat on the other side of Merry.

"Are you hungry, Sam?" Boromir asked.

Sam shook his head meaning, no. Merry and Pippin however devoured their bread and drank the water canteen quickly. Pippin let Merry have most of the water seeing as though he was losing a lot of blood.

"How does your leg feel?" Boromir asked Merry.

"Like it's on fire and I can't move it. How did you get here?"

Before Boromir could answer, Aragorn came back with a white cloth folded neatly in his arms.

"This is elven cloth. It will make your leg heal faster and ease some pain," he kneeled down to Merry and started unfolding the cloth.

"Wait!" Merry said, "We should save that in case somebody else gets more hurt than me,"

Aragorn shook his head and said,

"Your leg is bad enough,"

Merry nodded slightly.

"I'm going to need you to lay on your back, okay?" Aragorn asked.

Merry nodded and started to shrink down from the tree slowly making noises out of pain as he went. He was trying to keep his leg straight and not move it too much. Once he was successfully on his back, Aragorn rolled up Merry's pants to his high thigh so that he could see the wound better. He slowly and gently lifted Merry's leg and wrapped the cloth around his leg many times. Merry only yelped once and then tried to be quiet after that. Once Aragorn was done wrapping the white cloth around his leg, he rolled down Merry's pants again over the cloth bandage to its normal way.

"Okay, you're done. I need all three of you to get your rest now," Aragorn explained.

Pippin helped Merry sit up against the tree again next to him and Sam. The Hobbits all nodded.

Aragorn walked away to go and join Legolas and Gimli. Boromir got up to follow him, but stopped. He didn't feel welcome with them and he knew they didn't trust him. Not after what he had done. So he looked back at the Hobbits. Merry and Pippin were whispering among themselves and Sam was lying down with his back towards them.

Boromir decided to sit across from the Hobbits a little ways away. He suddenly felt very alone. He looked at Sam and could almost feel the loneliness that he had for Frodo. He then looked at Merry's stiffened leg and then at both Merry and Pippin and how scratched up and a mess they were.

Boromir knew deep down in his heart that what had happened to everybody was his entire fault. He sat there thinking about all the terrible things he had accomplished to do in only a couple of days all over one Ring. Betraying the Fellowship, going after the Ring alone, getting all the Hobbits taken and almost all killed, and now having risked Merry not to walk for a long time. If the Ring gets into the hands of Sauron, nobody would forgive him. Not even his own kin...

A/N: Poor Boromir... How did you like the riddle? I'm usually pretty bad at writing poems and riddles, but i acually liked that one! :-D
