Part 4

The attic ladder creaked as Bdubs made his way back down to the prying eyes of his friends. He had told Gumbo he would be right back and was now going to check to see the reactions of what just happened. The second both his shoes touched the ground, Bdubs felt a heavy hand grab his shoulder. Bdubs jumped in alarm as he was spun around towards a hyper Skizz. The man stared at him with a huge smile as he shook Bdubs' shoulders.
"That was so COOL!" Skizz exclaimed. Bdubs laughed, letting his shock be brought down by Skizz's excitement. Tango walked up from behind Skizz with a confused laugh.
"I'm going to be honest- I did not expect that!" He admitted. "But it was cool! I mean, a nice ghost?! When has that ever happened?"
"It's a weird first but welcomed one!" Bdubs smiled, getting a happy nod from Tango. Bdubs moved to push past the two when he spotted Impulse still in his chair. Bdubs walked up to him and looked at the screen. It was displaying the empty attic, well not empty because you could still barely see the silhouette of Gumbo the ghost.
"What are you thinking Imp?" He asked. Impulse's brown eyes glanced over at him before he spun around to face him.
"I'm thinking that we should look into the records of who has owned this house." He said as Tango and Skizz both gathered around them.
"That's smart. Could give us a good idea of how he died. Most ghosts are attached to the place they died or a place most precious to them while living." Tango said. Skizz gasped.
"Tango! Do you think he died here?!" Skizz realized, "What if his body is still here-"
"His body isn't here! I don't wanna think about that!" Impulse complained, shaking his head in his hands. "I can do ghosts! Not corpses!"
"You can barely do ghosts," Bdubs commented, knowing how terrified Impulse was to even step inside a haunted building. Impulse looked like he was about to say something but instead slumped back into his seat.
"So can't we just ask him how he died?" Skiz asked. Tango moved towards Impulse and pulled the computer screen towards him.
"From what it seems, Gumbo's memory isn't too good. So I doubt he'll remember how he died."
"Or who killed him," Bdubs said. All three heads turned towards him. Impulse's eyes were wide.
"You don't think-" Impulse started but his sentence faded into confused silence. Skizz huffed as he crossed his arms.
"I think that if there was a murder here, the previous owner would have told me!" He defended, making Tango laugh.
"If he was to sell this place to a dumb college kid, I don't think he would tell people there was a murder here. Ghosts aren't as bad as murders in some people's eyes." Tango explained. Impulse rolled in his chair to turn the computer screen back towards him. Tango stepped back willingly, moving to stand close behind him instead.
"I'll try and look up any people named Gumbo and Skizz, do you have any paperwork from the house?"
"Ya, I put it on one of the kitchen drawers temporarily," Skizz said. Bdubs laughed a little bit, knowing those papers weren't going to be in there temporarily.
"That sounds like the start of a junk drawer.." Bdubs mocked, making Skizz frown.
"No! My goal is to not let this house become a disaster." Skizz said, placing a hand on his hip. Tango looked over at Bdubs with a ridiculous smile, saying with no words that there was no way that was going to happen.
"Go get those, there might be some logs of previous owners in there." Impulse said. Skizz nodded and turned to leave, his footsteps echoing through the house. Impulse then swerved in his chair towards Tango and Bdubs. "You two can go check on our new ghost friend if you want."
"You aren't going to come up?" Tango asked, already knowing the answer. At the mention of the offer, Impulse's face went white and he turned back towards the computer screen.
"I-I'm good here thank you." Impulse declined, making Tango and Bdubs look at each other. 'Figures.' Bdubs turned around to walk back into the hall, hearing Tango start to follow behind him. Bdubs stopped below the ladder, reaching up to pull himself up into the first step.
"Hey Gumbo, you ok?" Bdubs asked, looking up into the darkness of the attic. With no sound, Bdubs watched Gumbo materialize from the darkness and look down at him with a soft expression.
"Yes I-I'm good." He responded, Bdubs surprised he was openly talking without the spirit box.
"My friends and I just wanted to let you know that you're free to wander the house if you want. Or can." Bdubs offered, knowing that kind of offer would make Impulse flip. From behind him, Tango waves towards the apparition, making him smile. Suddenly, Gumbo disappeared from view. Bdubs blinked to try and see if it was just his eyes but then heard a voice from next to him.
"It's been forever since I've been out of that attic." Gumbo said, materializing next to Tango. Bdubs could feel a brush of coldness as the ghost appeared, knowing that Tango felt it too. "That sounds bad, spending your afterlife in a damp cold attic."
"Ya it's not ideal." Tango laughed, his voice a bit shaky. "Nice to meet you Gumbo." Gumbo gave the blond a nod.
"Same to you Tango!" Gumbo smiled. Tango's eyes went wide.
"How do-"
"Know your name? Wait, was I not supposed to be listening then?" Gumbo asked, making Bdubs laugh. 'He really is the nicest ghost ever.'
Bdubs, Tango, and Gumbo all sat in the living room while Skizz and Impulse went through house papers and other things. Tango had pulled out his computer and was playing 'Mortuary assistant'. Gumbo floated over his shoulder curiously as the blond explained how horror games prepared them for the real stuff. After a while, Impulse leaned out from the dining room and looked at the three for a moment, before locking eyes with Bdubs. Bdubs got up and walked over to see what he wanted.
"Did y'all find something?" Bdubs asked. Impulse tensed up for a moment,
"Ya, a lot actually." Impulse said. The two walked to stand around Skizz who was sitting on a stool next to the desk. There were papers spread around on the desk and the number of tabs open on the computer hurt Bdubs eyes.
"So we couldn't find a Gumbo in any of these. But we did manage to find a similar name of someone who owned the house about 2 years ago." Skizz explained. He then gestured to Impulse to continue, signaling he had no more information to give. Impulse sat back down in his chair and clicked open one of the tabs on the computer. There was a google search pulled up, with dozens of pictures, but only one was selected. Bdubs looked confused as he stared at the screen. It was a guy, standing proudly with a small trophy. His hair was a raven black, short, and brushed back a bit. He had bright amber eyes, though they were covered slightly by the reflection of his thin white rim glasses. The trophy he had in his hands was small with an engraving of '1st place for robotics' and under that was the school's initials.
"Wait- I know that guy." Bdubs realized. "He went to my High School!" Now that he looked hard enough, the guy did resemble their ghostly friend. Bdubs must have not recognized him due to the picture not having the ghost's notable mustache.
"Really?! Did y'all ever talk?!" Skizz asked shockingly. Bdubs looked down at one of the closest papers. On it was a name newly circled in pencil.
"No, never. I only ever saw him in the halls or at other school events." Bdubs said, his eyes staring at the name. 'Mumbo K Jumbo'. "But that is him."
"Do we tell him?" Skizz asked. Bdubs stared back at the google picture.
"We have to." Impulse stated. "It could help him remember things more." Bdubs nodded and backed up to allow both Skizz and Impulse to stand. The three walked back into the living room and sat down, letting Impulse stand in front of them all. After a few minutes of explaining, Gumbo finally got it.
"So...We went to Highschool together?" Gumbo or now known as Mumbo said, holding his chin in one hand. "And my name was Mumbo?" Bdubs and Impulse nodded in unison.
"Sounds a lot better than Gumbo!" He laughed.
"That's crazy," Tango said, leaning back into the brown leather of the couch. "That you two knew each other I mean. The chance of that is insane!"
"Well, we didn't exactly know each other. More like I knew of him." Bdubs explained. Tango lets out a small "oh." in understanding. Bdubs looked at Mumbo for a moment and walked back to the computer where the picture of him was still pulled up. He pulled out his phone and quickly took a picture of it before walking back to the living room. He approached the floating ghost, gesturing the picture towards him.
"Do you recognize him?" He asked. Mumbo looked at the photo with wide eyes.
"That is what I looked like?" Mumbo said. "Feels different without the mustache."
"Right?" Tango agreed, moving to see the picture. "You were in robotics?" He commented, pointing at the trophy.
"I guess I was. Ya that sounds right." Mumbo confirmed. "Wow, knowing a bit more about myself helps?" He laughed. Bdubs watched as both Tango and Skizz turned to each other. Tango was the first to turn away from the weird mental conversation the two seemed to have had.
"But does it remind you of anything else?" He questioned. Mumbo stared at Tango for a moment, his wide blank eyes shaking a bit.
"I remember something about how the school always had cold hallways," Mumbo said, laughing as he did. "But my brain's still foggy mate, I don't know what to tell you." Bdubs felt his stomach sink. 'Don't panic, just give him time. Memories don't just come back.' He felt his breath hitch at the thought. It felt like he should be remembering something. 'Not now.' Bdubs argued with himself, mentally throwing the thought into the void of his mind. Impulse shrugged from where he stood.
"His memories aren't just going to come back." He said, practically reading Bdubs mind. "You can't rush stuff like that."
"But what if we just found more things to jog his memory." Tango combatted, seeming very determined to get some answers about this. "Like a yearbook or something." Bdubs blinked as he realized that Tango was looking at him.
"I might have one?" Bdubs pondered. 'I swore I brought some to the apartment when I moved in?' He tried remembering but shrugged. "I'll try and look for it and bring it back tomorrow." Bdubs blinked out for a second before reaching down to the clock on his belt. '10:08. Have I been here all day?' Bdubs thought. "Speaking of that, I should probably head home. Didn't mean to hang around all day like this"
"Hey, Don't worry man! We were doing important job things anyway." Tango winked. "And you were a massive help." He added, making Bdubs smile.
"Anytime! I have a feeling I'm going to be over here a lot more than I need to-" Bdubs admitted. Impulse laughed as Bdubs finished his sentence.
"Probably ya- haha!" he smiled.
"I mean it is your HQ now." Skizz shrugged, a small smile sneaking onto his face. "The BOO-mers HQ!" Bdubs almost choked as he inhaled to laugh. Impulse's eyes narrowed at the mention of the suggested name.
"I thought we said it wasn't going to be 'BOO-mers."
"Well I don't know?!" Skizz said in a very sarcastic tone, signaling he wasn't planning on changing the name. Bdubs rolled his eyes with a smile as he turned towards Mumbo.
"It was nice meeting you Mumbo," Bdubs said. The transparent ghost smiled at him with a small wave. "We'll get your memories back."
"You've already given me enough!" Mumbo shrugged. "But figuring out more might be fun." Bdubs nodded and walked over to the dining room to quickly put back all the equipment he still had on him and then headed for the door.
"See ya!" Bdubs exclaimed, the chorus of goodbyes made him laugh. It took him by surprise at how cold it was outside, but it didn't bother him too much. 'Fall here is always cold anyway.' Bdubs was happy to see his bike still untouched and chained to the mailbox. He pulled out a key from his key chain and undid the chains. He held onto the bike handles to make sure it didn't fall and put the chain lock back in its small bag on the bike. With a kick of his foot, Bdubs lifted himself onto the bike and set it in motion.
Bdubs' door clicked shut as it closed behind him. It was dark the entire time he biked home, He was just glad his apartment wasn't too far away from the new house. Bdubs walked through the small room and pushed open the door to his room. He flopped down onto his bed, Now being able to sit in silence, Bdubs thought about everything that had happened in the past few hours. Finding Mumbo, Realizing he went to his highs chool, 'Wait...Do you think he-' Bdubs started thinking but quickly shoved it away. Bdubs sat up, deciding to go check what yearbooks he actually had. He walked over his closet and pulled the doors open. Crouching down he brushed some clothes aside to reveal a shelf of some random personal belongings he had stored there. Some random books were stacked there, along with a few nicknacks, including a small redstone device that looked like it was supposed to be a miniature dog toy. Sure enough, on the shelf below that, sat his high school yearbooks. Bdubs ran a finger across the binds of the books, reading the labels to himself mentally. 9th Grade, 10th Grade, 12th Grade. (Going with the American school system for this) He knew 11th Grade would be missing and truly didn't want to recall why. He grabbed the 12th-grade book and sat it in his lap, flipping through it until he went to his graduating class. It took him a second to find Mumbo in the sea of faces. He also managed to spot himself, but Bdubs quickly avoided him, not wanting to cringe. He stared at the slightly younger Mumbo. Bdubs stood up, now having found what he needed, and placed the yearbook next to his bed just so he wouldn't forget it. Bdubs laid back down on his bed, his hands instinctively going for the golden clock. The metal felt nice in his hands. Suddenly, it was like a switch flicked in his mind, Bdubs dropped the clock onto his chest and pulled his phone out of his pocket. He pulled up google and quickly typed in what he needed. 'Mumbo Jumbo Death'. There had to be some record of the man's death, Right. As soon as the page loaded, his eyes locked with the first link he saw. 'Mumbo K Jumbo, missing since XX/XX/XX'. 2 years ago. Bdubs blinked.
"That...That was right after our senior year."
Just to Clarify, Bdubs and everyone are currently starting their Sophomore Year of College :D <3
