7. Home
Yamaguchi looked around, worried. Doctors had said today he could go home. Today he was going to ride in a car and listen to the radio and smell the air freshener. He was going to sleep in his bed full of stuffed animals and with Tsukishima.
He got to go home… Right?
"Tadashi, have you recently been able to move your broken arm?"
"Y-yes."
"Good. How is your memory?"
Yamaguchi gave a thumbs up.
"Alright. Good. We're just going to check on you."
Yamaguchi nodded. He felt his hips start to burn as he was moved. "Mm! M-MM!"
"Relax."
Yamaguchi panicked. His pelvis ached and then felt like it was being pinched at the muscles. He was being put flat on his back, which was the worse way to lay for him at the moment. He screamed to get them to stop.
"There's something wrong with your hips and ribs. I need to check."
Yamaguchi looked around, frantic. The other doctors were gone. But the pain was getting worse.
If he was shifted one more time he was going to cry.
"How have your hips felt recently?"
One of Yamaguchi's hips popped. His vision went black for a moment before he sighed shakily. No time for tears. He wanted to go home.
"Good. One pop."
His hips popped again and he gasped. His vision darkened completely. It hurt so bad.
"You'll need to get yourself a support."
Yamaguchi choked, catching a sob. He coughed. When could he go home?
****
Tsukishima set down his bag, yawning. "I'm back angel. Are your things… Packed…" He paused, staring at Yamaguchi. He looked more than tired. Farther than exhausted. Tsukishima got closer, thinking another panic attack had happened.
Yamaguchi shakily moved a hand forward.
"No questions. I'm giving you my phone so you can type. I'm getting Lea too."
Yamaguchi nodded. He typed slowly as Tsukishima was out. When he came back, he hadn't finished at all. He'd gotten barely a sentence in before Tsukishima came back with Lea.
Yamaguchi put the phone down and watched them. He had no energy to try and remember to talk or move much. "Tadashi do your hips hurt?"
"Mm…"
"Alright. Eight out of ten?"
Yanaguchi blinked twice.
"Above eight?" Lea questioned.
Yamaguchi blinked once.
She nodded. "Full ten?"
Yamaguchi blinked once.
"Tsukishima, don't touch him." She got up and ran out. When she returned it was with two male nurses and medication ready to put into an IV. "He's not supposed to be on his back like that. Put the bed up a bit. Pillows should be around his hips too."
Tsukishima stood and watched as Yamaguchi was moved gently. Every time he was alone something happened.
Yamaguchi wasn't responsive much, near unconscious with the pain. The medications wouldn't kick in fast enough before he did pass out. Tsukishima was allowed back over. He hugged him carefully, himself shaking.
Lea stepped closer. "My shift started forty minutes ago… I don't know what happened. I'm so sorry."
"The cameras. There's one in the hall and close to the bed in here."
"Right."
"Fucking check them then. This is unacceptable."
Lea hurried out.
Tsukishima kissed the side of Yamaguchi's head and put his head back down. He was so angry he could yell and cry. He was supposed to come home. He was supposed to be cuddled up and eating ice cream in bed.
Something wrong had happened. He was supposed to be checked on at three so he could head home at four and get home at five. Eat at six-thirty.
It was days before Yamaguchi could muster the strength to sit up again. There was severe bruising around his hips and chest. He couldn't hum louder like before. All of his progress with speech had gone out the window with his sleep schedule.
He woke up at eight, tried to eat at eight-thirty. After that was focusing on keeping down solids if he hadn't used a feeding tube. And then a nap. The naps lasted hours. Lunch had returned to being a feeding tube like dinner had.
He slept during the day like some sort of cat and stayed up at night until a nurse gave him medicine.
Now, he was bundled up and laying on Tsukishima's chest. He hadn't fallen asleep yet and he was messing with Tsukishima's button-up.
"Does anything hurt angel?"
Yamaguchi looked up and sighed softly.
"Hips?"
"Mhmm…"
"Is it too much?"
Yamaguchi shook his head. He closed his eyes and whined softly.
"Can't sleep?"
"Mhmm."
"Do you want me to put music on?"
Yamaguchi yawned. He moved slightly, achy.
"I'm going to get up, okay? I'll be back."
Tsukishima got up and went to the nurse's station. One of Yamaguchi's nurses turned to him, worried.
"Is he in pain again?"
"Not very much pain but he's not sleeping."
"We already gave him sleep medication…"
"I know… Can I take him out of his room? I think if I just wheel him around he should be able to sleep. Maybe down to the nursery."
"Alright." She stood and headed to the room.
"Tadashi, would you like to go look at the babies?"
Yamaguchi blew out slowly. He whined softly.
Tsukishima walked over and gently held his face in his hands. It took a moment before Yamaguchi put his arms up. Yamaguchi put his arms around Tsukishima's shoulders. Tsukishima lowered his voice. "Thank you, baby."
Tsukishima lifted him slowly, putting him in his wheelchair. The nurse disconnected his IV line and checked his heart rate. "Seventy-six… Is it hard to breathe?"
Yamaguchi shook his head. Tsukishima spoke up. "His heart rate is usually between seventy and eighty-two."
"Ah. Alright." She gently patted Yamaguchi's hand. "Any pain?"
He pinched his fingers close together. The nurse left and Tsukishima put more pillows around Yamaguchi. "Are you comfortable?"
Yamaguchi put his head back and looked at the bed. He tried grabbing his blanket but fumbled. Tsukishima took it and held it up.
"Lap?"
"Mhmm."
Tsukishima checked the smaller male's sweatpants and checked that he was comfortable. He put the blanket over Yamaguchi's lap and pulled it up to his waist. Mr. Buns was put in his lap and Yamaguchi held him, watching Tsukishima.
Tsukishima took him downstairs to the nursery and watched as Yamaguchi played with his stuffed animal. He looked exhausted. Defeated. Anything but his normal self.
Tsukishima put him in front of the nursery. "You alright?"
"Mhmm."
Tsukishima sat on the floor next to him. He put his head to the side, resting against Yamaguchi's chair. It was quiet for a while. Just them sitting in silence, both with words in their mind.
Tsukishima spoke up. "Tadashi, I love you."
Yamaguchi sniffled quietly.
Tsukishima looked up and saw tears streaming down his cheeks. "Tadashi? Wait why are you crying?" He stood hurriedly and Yamaguchi looked up.
"M-mm… Mm…"
Tsukishima held his face in his hands. "Angel…"
Yamaguchi held his face in his own hands, shaking.
"Is this a panic attack?"
Yamaguchi pinched his fingers close together.
"We need to go back then. We're not going-"
Yamaguchi tightened his grip. He shook his head, sliding his arms around Tsukishima. He just cried and held on, worrying the mothers who were visiting babies and nurses who were charting. Tsukishima eventually felt him stop crying. The sniffling stopped. His head was resting on his shoulder, heavy with exhaustion.
Tsukishima eased him back into his seat and pet his hair and kissed his temple. Yamaguchi was fast asleep, his quiet breathing reassuring to Tsukishima. He took him back upstairs through quiet halls.
While there he woke slightly and snuggled up to Tsukishima, laying on his chest as if everything felt okay in his body. Tsukishima rubbed his hair and held his hand. It was warm. Quiet.
Tsukishima gently moved his hand and rubbed his fingers.
"Mm… Mm…"
"Shhhh." Tsukishima kissed his hair. "We need to get you home…"
Yamaguchi grabbed Tsukishima's shirt and one of his legs twitched. Barely any but it moved.
Tsukishima closed his eyes and just held him close. It took a bit before he fell asleep and was relaxed into his body.
The occasional nurse checked in on Yamaguchi and woke him ever so slightly. Tsukishima would get him to sleep quickly each time, refusing to let him stay awake too long.
****
Yamaguchi leaned back into Tsukishima, humming softly. "Everything okay?"
Yamaguchi puckered his lips. "Mwah."
Tsukishima glanced around before kissing him. "You're gonna get me caught. Stop it."
"Mph."
"Oh hush." Tsukishima yawned. Yamaguchi leaned over as much as he could and spit into the trash can a few times. "What are you doing?"
Yamaguchi whined, flailing his arms to sit up.
Tsukishima sat him up. He must have slept well to be acting like that. "Baby, what are you doing?"
Yamaguchi whined softly at him.
"Do you want to sit up?"
"Mm. Mm."
Tsukishima nodded. He didn't have to stay here long today. His bag was packed and so was Yamaguchi's. They were placed by the doorway and had Mr. Buns on them. "Are you excited?"
"Mhmm!"
Tsukishima kissed the top of his head. "Just a little longer and they'll come to help me get you into our car. Then we get to go home."
Yamaguchi looked up. He smiled. His eye bags were still there. Any sane person would see him and put him to bed. But he was happy. Happier than he had been in two weeks.
Lea walked in, smiling. There was another nurse behind her who picked up their bags. "Good morning boys. Are you ready to go home?"
Yamaguchi clapped. Tsukishima eased him up slowly. He got him into his wheelchair and gave him a small head pat. Yamaguchi's shaky hands were put in his lap as Tsukishima made sure he would be safe.
"Ah! Ah!" Yamaguchi gestured to Lea, arms out.
"Are you alright?"
"He wants a hug," Tsukishima stated. "It won't hurt him. Go ahead and hug him."
Lea leaned down and hugged him. "I'm proud of you. You've gotten better so fast…"
Yamaguchi laughed softly. He patted her back and sat back in his seat. Tsukishima wheeled him down to the lobby where they cut his bracelets off and took him down to the parking lot. Tsukishima opened the door and hefted him into his seat.
"Anything hurt?"
Yamaguchi pinched his fingers close together.
"Is it too bad?"
Yamaguchi shook his head and relaxed against his seat. He felt of the side and laid himself back a little bit. Tsukishima moved his legs properly into the car and got the bags and wheelchair into his backseat.
After handling all of that he sat in the driver's test, clasping Yamaguchi's hand. He looked over and smiled. It was very subtle but it was there. "Are you excited to go home?"
Yamaguchi grinned. "Mhmm."
Tsukishima kissed the back of his hand. "I am too. I got the apartment cleaned and hopefully better to move in."
Yamaguchi hummed. The car started and he held Tsukishima's hand tighter.
"Close your eyes. Relax."
Yamaguchi was able to relax, for the most part, occasionally opening his eyes to look out of the windows. Pulling up to the apartment building wasn't too bad. Even getting out of the car wasn't bad.
Going inside was though...
When had he been stared at so much? It was too much.
