24. Judgement
Yamaguchi quirked a brow, confused. "Tsuki?"
Tsukishima put his car in park. "This is my surprise."
Yamaguchi stared at the house. "We have money?"
"We do. I made sure." Tsukishima turned, trying to hide how nervous he was. "It's nearly completely accessible for your wheelchair. I was planning on showing you all of this and showing you plans for what I'd like to do for you. It has three rooms and two bathrooms. There's a basement too that is a room if you want to see if stairs would be okay. This is a lot, I know. But-"
"Tsuki… Thank you." Yamaguchi smiled, teary-eyed. This was a grand gesture towards him and greatly appreciated.
Tsukishima took a deep breath. "No problem. Do you want to try to walk around?"
"I can try."
Tsukishima nodded and got out. He circled the car and got out his cane. He helped Yamaguchi out of the car. Yamaguchi held onto him, fixing his hip brace and getting used to his weight on his feet. "Better?"
"Mhmm." Yamaguchi smiled. He kissed Tsukishima's cheek.
Tsukishima handed him his cane and helped him inside. The realtor inside made a double-take before smiling. "Hello! How are you two today?"
Yamaguchi smiled. "Hello! Good!"
Tsukishima held him up, noticing his knees buckling. The woman sent a worried look. "Are you sure?"
"I have walking difficulty."
"I see. Do you need a wheelchair?"
"Oh. No, I'm okay. Thank you."
She nodded. "Would you two like to see the home?"
Tsukishima nodded. He noticed Yamaguchi's genuine struggle as they headed to the hallway. "Hang on. Tadashi, sit down."
Yamaguchi sat down. Tsukishima hurried to get him his wheelchair, gentle. The chair was able to perfectly in the hallway and he was able to get into rooms easily. The bathroom in the hallway next to the two main rooms was accessible and somehow they had managed to see downstairs.
Yamaguchi loved the house. It was nice and his wheelchair fit everywhere he needed. Tsukishima talked with the realtor, leaving Yamaguchi alone to look around.
When they finished up Yamaguchi confirmed that he wanted the house or at least something similar. Tsukishima did as he needed.
He took Yamaguchi with him to the library and had to stay away to teach some new interns. All of them loved being with Yamaguchi on their break, ecstatic over getting to meet him.
"Hey… Where's Tsuki?"
"He's helping the interns that aren't on break." One of the girls responded. She pointed to one of the shelves by the desk where Tsukishima normally was.
"Ooh."
Tsukishima turned, reading the back of a thick novel in his hands. He was concentrated on that instead of the interns around him, which wasn't surprising. Yamaguchi started to roll up to him, wanting to know what time his shift ended and if he needed to order something.
One of the interns came up behind Tsukishima, hand dangerously close to a part of Tsukishima that shouldn't be touched. Well, no one should have to go through it but it happened. The intern, a woman, slapped his ass playfully. Tsukishima turned around, nearly falling over from trying to get away. "WHAT THE FUCK?!"
Yamaguchi hurried closer. "Kei!"
The woman laughed. "Relax, it was a joke. What're you reading?"
Tsukishima stood there, speechless. Yamaguchi rolled up to him, extending his arms. Tsukishima helped him up, keeping his eyes on the woman. Yamaguchi leaned against him, glaring at the lady. "Leave him alone."
She chuckled. "Excuse me?"
Yamaguchi didn't break eye contact. He held up his left hand, showing his ring. "Mine. You're gross."
"Oh, he- oh. That's disgusting."
"What?"
"I hate fags. You two shouldn't be able to get married." She tightened her posture.
"You know what? I hate dumbasses who enjoy sexually assaulting people." Tsukishima pulled out his phone, doing something quickly before snatching the lanyard she was holding. "Leave. Your meeting will be on Tuesday."
She started to protest, not enjoying being bossed around.
"Leave!"
She sighed, walking off.
Tsukishima looked to the rest of his group. "We're not going to have any more incidents, right?"
The group hurriedly shook their heads.
"Good. Go back to shelving." Tsukishima gently shifted Yamaguchi. "Hey."
Yamaguchi gulped. "Uh… Hi. That was a lot."
"It was."
"What time does your shift end?"
"Six."
"Mm… I'm sleepy."
Tsukishima set him down in his wheelchair. "I'll take you to the back so you can sleep."
Yamaguchi smiled. "Okay."
Tsukishima helped him into the back and on the couch in the break room. His colleagues knew better than to wake Yamaguchi back here so it would be fine to leave him by himself. It was weird. Tsukishima just carried on though and finished until he closed up.
He attempted to let Yamaguchi work on his own to get into his wheelchair. Thirty minutes after he told him to do so, he saw the smaller male just laying still, not in his chair.
"Tadashi?" Tsukishima questioned, fearing the worst.
"Mm?"
The latter sighed softly. He leaned down, easing him up. "What happened?"
"Weak." Yamaguchi slumped into him. "Eh."
"Oh. That's okay." Tsukishima kissed his temple. He set him in his chair and Yamaguchi slouched his back hurting worse. Tonight was going to be awful if this carried on. It always was.
Tsukishima hurried him home and helped him to bed. Yamaguchi burrowed in blankets, in more pain and crying softly. Tsukishima laid behind his blanket mass, holding him.
"Do you need your medicine?"
"N-nn… Nn…" Yamaguchi struggled with his speech, too overwhelmed.
Tsukishima rubbed his back, slow. "Shhhh, shhhh, shhhh, shhhh… It's okay, angel. It's okay. I'll go grab some melatonin and hopefully this is gone in the morning. Sound good?"
Yamaguchi nodded.
Tsukishima got him the medicine and held him in his lap, running his fingers through his hair. Yamaguchi calmed over time, quiet. Tsukishima didn't dare move as he felt the smaller male fall asleep. There had been nights when Yamaguchi had suffered through pain and fallen asleep but woken up in pain again when Tsukishima so much as stretched in his sleep.
It was odd to just have swings of pain. But both got through it.
Tsukishima leaned into the wall, holding his partner. He fell asleep, bundled up.
****
"Babe! I seriously need you to hurry up in there!" Tsukishima called out, picking up his bag.
"Trying!"
Tsukishima opened the door of the bathroom. "What's taking you so long?"
"I'm numb again," Yamaguchi whined.
Tsukishima lifted him off the floor. "Just your legs?"
"Mhmm. Hand hurts." Yamaguchi was set on their bed. "Sorry…"
"For what? You can't control that. Who will you be with today?"
"By myself."
Tsukishima did a double-take. "You sure?"
"Mhmm. I can be by myself."
Tsukishima leaned down, cupping his face. He kissed his forehead. "If you think you can do that, I'll trust your judgment."
Yamaguchi smiled. "Yeah!"
Tsukishima smiled at him. Ugh, his partner was cute.
Yamaguchi kissed his lips. "Go to work."
"You're just trying to get me to leave."
"Mm… Maybe! Bye-bye!"
Tsukishima laughed. He stood and picked up his bag. "Goodbye."
"I love you!"
"Love you too Tadashi."
"I love you more!" Yamaguchi protested as Tsukishima started to walk out.
Tsukishima turned around. He hugged Yamaguchi, setting him down on the bed. "I love you most."
Yamaguchi squealed. "Ugh!"
Tsukishima kissed his cheek. "Goodbye."
"Bye!"
He left for work and Yamaguchi relaxed into the bed. His back hurt and his hand was cramping. He had to live like this because of someone stupid.
Yamaguchi turned onto his stomach, sighing. One more month. One more month until he finally got married and they would try to live a happier life.
Marriage didn't fix everything but it was something they had wanted since Tsukishima felt comfortable in his skin. It had been eight years and they were finally here.
The whole wedding process was weird for them too, seeing as Yamaguchi was Japanese and Tsukishima's family was Japanese American. They had managed to mix a Western wedding with a traditional wedding. They just hoped that Tsukishima's family that was coming accepted how things were happening.
Of course, the most important part of all of this was to make sure Yamaguchi was comfortable. If things continued like they were now, it would be bad for him.
He wiggled, slipping off the bed. The pain wasn't unbearable yet so he could walk and get at least a bagel to eat. He hurried to get that before getting back in bed. He dressed down to boxers and Tsukishima's most used button-down shirt.
He was nearly asleep until he was startled by his phone. He answered, half asleep. "Mm… Ello."
"Hey! You up for dinner tonight with me and Asahi?"
"No, no… I can't." Yamaguchi shifted, huffing. "Maybe tomorrow."
"You sound exhausted man."
"Woke up," Yamaguchi whispered. He yawned.
"Ah shit, sorry."
"Is okay…"
"I'll let you get back to sleep. See you soon!"
"Bye-bye." Yamaguchi hung up, dropping his head. He settled again and passed out, trying to ignore the knot in his lower back trying to keep him awake with pain. He wouldn't let that happen and certainly wouldn't ease it with painkillers. He was trying to wean off of the prescribed painkillers he had, worried sick he was addicted. No way he would take care of a baby in that state.
