2. Sick

Kuroo watched as Tsukishima set his bag down and sat in a plastic chair. "Would you like me to leave?"

"You're fine," Tsukishima whispered. He looked at Yamaguchi's face. Still the ventilator. Not as many bandages.

"It's been a week…"

"I'm not letting them pull the plug."

"Dude…"

"His chances went up slightly. He's not dying."

Kuroo nodded.

Tsukishima gently held Yamaguchi's hand. His fingers were a little dry from the lack of lotioning them. This was odd.

Kuroo yawned. "I need to get home to Kenma, okay?"

"Okay."

Kuroo looked over his friend again. Tsukishima looked like he hadn't slept in so long. Had he showered?

Tsukishima put his head down on the bed and just held Yamaguchi's hand. He wasn't one to talk much when he was in a bad situation.

But he did today. He whispered what had been happening lately. He left out the fact that he'd been too nervous to eat today. He left out anything that would be upsetting.

"I love you Tadashi…" Tsukishima kissed over one of his knuckles. He closed his eyes, just trying to relax so he could think.

"Tsukishima?"

Tsukishima hummed.

"It's Hinata…"

Tsukishima looked up. "Why are you here?"

"Checking on Yama. Is he going to be okay?"

"Yeah."

Hinata glanced to the door where Kageyama was stood, looking worried as well. "How long has he been asleep?"

"A week." Tsukishima put his head down and sighed softly. "Why?"

"I- we're just worried. Both me and Kags. And the team."

Tsukishima closed his eyes. What was he supposed to say to that? He was so worried that it physically hurt him. Everyone loved him. Everyone was going to be worried.

"What type of injuries does he have?"

"His hips were shattered. Three broken ribs. Brain bleed and concussion. They think he's not going to be able to walk because of his spine and pelvis. His arm is broken. Burns from the car."

"Oh no…"

Tsukishima yawned. "The burns aren't bad. The cuts are healing slightly."

"There's nothing they can do?"

"Not until he wakes up."

Hinata fiddled for a moment. "I learned to cook! If you want I can bring you stuff. Suga and Tanaka and Ennoshita cook well! And Oikawa's boyfriend is a doctor. Iwaizumi I think. We can help if you want. I think it would help to have a few extra hands to help and… And…" Hinata looked at Yamaguchi's face. His lip trembled. "I wanna help so bad. He's hurt…"

Tsukishima looked over and stared. He gulped. "Hinata what can you cook? I spend most of my time here or at work."

"A lot. I can make a lot of stuff. Kags is a picky eater too so I can make whatever you want."

Tsukishima nodded. "Thank you."

Hinata nodded and walked out, taking Kageyama's hand.

Tsukishima scooted closer to the bed and relaxed again. He closed his eyes and kept a hold of Yamaguchi's hand. Eventually, he drifted off and was sleeping next to him.

Nurses walked in and out of the room, checking on Yamaguchi and taking stats. His heart rate had raised a bit and Tsukishima had been woken up by doctors checking in on him.

In the morning he discovered a blanket that had been draped over him. There was someone else in the room, typing away on a laptop.

Tsukishima sat up and rubbed his eyes, confused.

"Are you awake?"

"Mhmm… Who is it?"

"Guess!"

"No."

"Eh… It's Sugawara. I brought you breakfast." Suga stood and gave over the container that he'd had in his bookbag. "I hope sushi and an omelet for breakfast are okay. I wanted to leave before traffic hit."

"Ah… Thank you."

"Mhmm! How long have you been here?"

"Since seven last night."

"Oh…"

"It's fine. Why are you suddenly here?"

"I've been busy, sorry. I tried to take time off of work but they wouldn't let me go."

"It's fine." He yawned.

"I read the chart and talked to doctors so I know what's going on. You should keep talking to him. Sometimes people can hear others while in a coma."

Tsukishima nodded. He needed to go back to sleep. He was tired.

Suga worriedly looked over him. "Did you sleep much?"

"I guess."

Suga nodded and adjusted the blankets. "I wonder if he's dreaming."

"I have no idea. He doesn't dream a lot."

"Really? He looks like he dreams."

"Not really…"

Suga smiled. He fixed Yamaguchi's hair a bit and looked around. "This room looks dull."

"It's a hospital room."

"I'll be right back asshat." Suga left the room.

Tsukishima held Yamaguchi's hand and rubbed his fingers. "Good morning angel. I'm really hoping you can't feel the pain from the accident." He sighed. "We're going to work hard to get you back to normal when you wake up, okay?"

The only response he got was the beeping of his heart monitor.

"I miss you."

Tsukishima kept eating, still quiet. He wanted to help him but he wouldn't do anything. He couldn't.

Suga cane back in with yellow and pink flowers that he put on the bedside table. He turned on the TV and sat back down. "Thought he might need something more than boring walls."

"I guess."

"Hey, he's not dead. Don't act like that."

Tsukishima stared at the floor. "I know that. I'm the one in charge of his life support."

Suga gently took his hand. "He's going to be okay."

Tsukishima pulled his hand away. He checked the time. He'd need to leave soon to get ready for work. "I need to leave."

Suga nodded. "Alright."

Tsukishima got up and kissed Yamaguchi's forehead, lowering his voice. "I'll be back angel."

Tsukishima walked out. He went down to his car, ignoring the cold. The drive home wasn't long and was without the radio on.

Tsukishima changed into a pair of checkered brown pants Yamaguchi had bought him. He put a white button-up on and slipped on his favorite green sweater. He ruffled his hair and glanced at himself in the mirror.

He looked dead.

Tsukishima grabbed Yamaguchi's concealer and tested it. This was his winter one. Holy shit he was pale.

Tsukishima covered his eyebags and went back to his car. He headed to work in silence, pulling into his parking spot.

Tsukishima clocked in and put on his name tag before heading for his carts.

He shelved and organized until lunch. He picked up something warm and decent tasting at a convenience store and ate it inside, reading.

Tsukishima went ahead and went back to work, fixing books and helping people find textbooks for school. It wasn't that bad today. He didn't think of Yamaguchi the whole day today despite being worried sick.

Kuroo came and stole him away. He had managed to get Bokuto to come with them to a hot pot restaurant. Bokuto had brought Akaashi along, who stayed quiet the whole time except for whispering to Bokuto about the food or when Bokuto would flirt with him. It was sweet how Akaashi clung to him and giggled.

He was a bit odd but very nice.

Kuroo joked with Tsukishima and got him to smile a bit. Tsukishima ate and was tempted to drink alcohol, which he hesitated at. How would he visit Yamaguchi?

Akaashi was nervous as Kuroo kept urging him to drink. "Kuroo, stop it. Kotarou is the only one that should be drinking tonight. Tsukishima visits Yamaguchi at night."

"I'm trying to get him to loosen up."

Bokuto set down his cup. "Kuroo."

"I'm not doing anything wrong."

Tsukishima yawned. He pulled out his phone and got up. "I'll be right back."

Bokuto and Akaashi watched him. "That looked really important."

Bokuto scooted over to the window. "He's on the phone."

"Kotaro-"

"Shush."

Akaashi took a hold of his arm. "I don't appreciate that."

Bokuto immediately backed away from the window. "My fault. Sorry." He hugged Akaashi tight. "Alright cute stuff, no more drinks for me."

Akaashi laughed. Kuroo rolled his eyes as Bokuto kissed Akaashi.

He looked out the window and saw Tsukishima pacing, on the phone. He hung up and took a deep breath before walking back inside.

"Everything okay?"

"Yeah, he's fine. His Mom called me. She's going to be at the hospital really soon with Tadashi's sister and I need to distract her." Tsukishima grabbed his things. He put some cash on the table and slipped on his coat. "Thank you for the meal."

Tsukishima left the building, going to his car. "Tsukishima!"

"Yeah?"

Akaashi held out his hand. Tsukishima put his out and Akaashi pressed his money to his palm.  "You have enough on your plate at the moment. Keep your money, I have enough to cover your share."

"It's not a strain I just-"

"Tsukishima. Keep the money. Either that or I'm slapping you and my slaps hurt."

Tsukishima sighed. "Fine. I need to go. Thank you."

Akaashi ran back inside. Tsukishima got into his car and went off to the hospital.

When he got there a little girl with dark hair ran up to him and he picked her up, setting her on his hip. "Well hello there. How are you?"

"Hi!"

"Kei… Thank you."

Tsukishima looked up from the little girl tugging at his glasses. "Of course."

Yamaguchi's mother stepped into his room and she started crying. Tsukishima walked into the lobby and played with his partner's sister, letting her play games on his phone as well. She was sweet and curious.

"Is my brother okay?"

"He's having to sleep because he's sick right now."

"Oh, no am I going to get sick?"

"It's not like that. He's gonna be okay."

"Ooh. Okay! Can I make him a card?"

"Of course you can." Tsukishima went over to the front desk. "Do you have any copy paper and crayons?"

"I do!" The burse brought out paper and crayons. "Hello, there sweetie! Who are you going to draw for?"

"My brother! He's sick so they had to make him sleep." The little one was given the crayons. Tsukishima held the paper, smiling. He had to smile for this little girl.

"Aw man, I hope he wakes up soon! Good luck on your drawing."

"Thank you!"

Tsukishima set her down on the ground near a coffee table and she started scribbling pictures. "Tomoni, would you like to write anything on there?"

"Mhmm!"

Tsukishima got out a pen and leaned over. "What am I going to write?"

"We love you!"

"Alright." Tsukishima wrote it out above the stick figures she'd drawn. "Who are these people?"

"It's me and mommy and daddy and you and big brother!"

"Why'd you draw me?"

Tomoni drew little hearts around the two of them. "You and my big brother are gonna get married and he loves you."

Tsukishima gently rubbed her hair. "You're right. We'll get married when he's better."

Tomoni smiled, grabbing more paper. "I'm gonna draw a puppy."
