10. No Love

Odd how people heard the sounds they hated before the nicer ones.

At the moment Yamaguchi could hear the sound of doctors talking instead of the soft music a nurse had put on for him. He couldn't really feel anything.

The music had been put on so he could relax as he was put under. He was supposed to be under?

Suddenly, the music stopped.

"Doctor Shima, he's waking up!"

"Ah, crap."

Yamaguchi looked to the side, starting to move.

Someone rushed up, holding an oxygen mask. "Hello there, don't worry. It's alright. Just close your eyes."

Yamaguchi whined as the mask was put on him. It was bright in here. He didn't feel good.

"Night night."

Yamaguchi's eyes closed slightly. That was better.

****

"Eh… Eh… Eh…" Yamaguchi reached up. Was that his partner?

"Shhhh. I'm just fixing something. Hush."

"…uki?"

"Yes baby."

Yamaguchi nodded. He kept his arms open until he felt a body press against his chest. "Ow…"

"Sorry. Chest hurt?"

"Mhmm…"

"Throat hurt?"

"Mhmm."

"Makes sense. You're so stubborn." Tsukishima kissed Yamaguchi's cheek. "Wouldn't stop fighting the anesthetic."

Yamaguchi tilted his head back and took a deep breath. Slowly, he got the feeling in his fingers and toes back and hugged Tsukishima tight, listening to what the doctors had told Tsukishima.

Apparently, he'd fought off the anesthetics a total of six times, and each time he had mumbled to the nurse and tried to hug a doctor who had blood on her.

It made him bleed way more than expected and he'd needed a tube to force him under for the last time. He stayed under until they fixed his hips to where the infection was gone and he would be able to move for the most part. Some physical training should work to help with the rest.

Which meant he would be okay soon enough.

Maybe.

No one really knew.

"Hey, are you hungry?"

"Mhmm!" Yamaguchi wiggled slightly. He grabbed his shirt and tried to sit up. He looked like an overturned turtle.

Tsukishima snorted at the thought.

"Eh?"

"You're acting like an overturned turtle."

Yamaguchi opened his mouth before closing it and frowning.

"I know, I know that was rude. Quit the whining."

Yamaguchi flicked him off and stuck his tongue out.

"Quit."

He did it again.

"Yams."

Again, he shot him the bird.

"Yama."

Again.

"Yamaguchi."

Yamaguchi giggled. He hummed.

Tsukishima nodded. "Thanks."

"Bleh."

"Bleh?" Tsukishima poked his cheek. "Bleh?"

"Bleeeh," Yamaguchi whined.

"Bleh. Bleh. Bleh." Tsukishima kept poking him over his face and neck. "Idiot. Love you."

Yamaguchi smiled.

Both stared before Tsukishima laughed and kissed him. "I'm going to go get you something to drink."

Yamaguchi forced him to stay still. He snuggled close and kissed him. "Mm…"

"I love you."

Yamaguchi wiggled.

Tsukishima sat him up. A nurse came in with a cup of cold water, which Yamaguchi downed and got more of quickly. He was thirsty and whinier than normal, which honestly was normal Yamaguchi.

"Baby calm down. Do you want to go back to sleep?"

Yamaguchi shook his head quickly.

"What is it?"

The nurse looked over. "He doesn't look like he enjoys being in bed. You'll be able to get out soon Tadashi, but you just got out of surgery."

Yamaguchi whined loudly. He wiggled and clapped and just moved where he could. Tsukishima went to his bag and grabbed a weighted blanket. He put it over Yamaguchi, keeping him still. Yamaguchi was fast asleep within minutes from the weight, holding the blanket and snoring softly.

****

Tsukishima opened the door to his bedroom, holding a bag. It was not something that he wanted to be carrying but it was a small gift for Yamaguchi. It was from Bath and Body Works and had two candles and a book from a different store.

"Tadashi…" Tsukishima shook his shoulder, moving aside his blankets. Yamaguchi shook his head, huffing. The latter just laughed. "Good morning weirdo. How are you feeling?"

Yamaguchi gave a thumbs up.

"Great. Want to see what I got you?"

Yamaguchi snored softly, back asleep.

"Eh." Tsukishima shook his shoulder. "Lazy, open your eyes." Yamaguchi opened his eyes and stared at Tsukishima. "Would you like to see what I've got you?"

Yamaguchi stirred. He rubbed his eyes before grabbing Tsukishima's hand and kissing the top of his hand.

"Ah… Thank you. I'm going to put the bag next to the bed, okay? On my nightstand. I've got to get to work. Suga is coming by to make sure you're eating and not doing anything stupid."

Yamaguchi nodded.

"I love you, I'll be home later tonight."

Yamaguchi kissed his hand again and rubbed the skin.

Tsukishima pulled away and covered him again. He left the apartment, trying to be as quiet as possible.

Yamaguchi laid there, half awake and thinking. It was so early. The sun wasn't even up.

Tsukishima usually didn't work long hours and the library opened at ten. It seemed like it was six in the morning.

Why was he leaving so early again? This wasn't normal. Had this been happening while he was in a coma? Was Tsukishima avoiding him because he was now sick and disabled? Was he not loved as much as before because he couldn't give as much?

Yamaguchi stayed there, thinking.

Was he not loved anymore because of his body?

Tsukishima usually got mad about things easy and it was scary. Which meant he could possibly not be loved anymore.

Yamaguchi tried to move to get up out of bed, shaky from more than pain. He grabbed the bag and opened it, checking what was in it.

Vanilla bean candles and a new book he'd wanted before his accident.

"Tsuki," Yamaguchi whispered. His eyes started to water and he covered up.

He wanted Tsukishima. He wanted to be loved. He'd spent so long not able to move, trapped in his bed and not able to talk. Now he was alone.

Life hadn't been the same since the accident. Not just the fact that he was injured but he remembered things he couldn't tell his partner.

Everyone thought he'd just slept during his coma but he was not sleeping in his mind. The whole time he'd been out he'd dreamed and they weren't pleasant dreams. They were nightmares. So bad that when he woke up he'd nearly forgotten who Tsukishima was and was panicked.

He still had nightmares and woke up from them, jolting slightly and laying there. Tsukishima's body gave him comfort and he was able to sleep. He knew he was loved. It was okay.

Right?

If not he would hold back for a bit so that Tsukishima didn't have to be stressed.

He could do things on his own now hopefully.

For now, he needed to get back to sleep.

****

Suga peeked into Yamaguchi's room, curious. He had to watch him for a bit so he would eat but the younger boy was fast asleep. It was now almost ten though and he needed to eat.

Slowly, Suga walked in and turned on the main light. "Yama… Hey…" He sat on the side of the bed and carefully pulled back the blankets. He set a bag Yamaguchi had been holding on the floor and shook his shoulder. "Time to wake up."

Yamaguchi whined, covering up.

Suga laughed. "Come on, I'll make you something for breakfast."

Again, Yamaguchi whined. He shifted around until he was holding a shirt that wasn't his, eyes staring tiredly at his pillow.

Suga knew that look. Daichi sometimes had that look. "Yama… What happened? Why are you having bad dreams?"

Yamaguchi sniffled. He looked up at Suga with a hurt expression.

"Do you need your pain medication? Or is it the dream?"

Yamaguchi tapped his temple.

Suga helped him sit up and wiped away his tears. He hugged him, rubbing his back. "It's okay now. I've got you."

"Tsuki," Yamaguchi whispered.

"He'll be home at one."

Yamaguchi held in tighter, crying. "Tsuki."

"Do you miss him?"

"M-mhmm."

"He's at work. He'll be back soon, okay?"

Yamaguchi sat up a bit more. In one hand he held Tsukishima's t-shirt, clutching what he had of his partner at the moment. "Tsuki…"

Suga got him into his chair and wheeled him to the kitchen. He was able to get him to eat a whole breakfast and keep it down. Suga lit his candles and gave him his book. Yamaguchi was able to sit on the couch, wearing sweatpants and Tsukishima's shirt and hoodie.

Tsukishima came home an hour late, soaking wet and holding a bag from a restaurant and his bookbag.

"Tsuki!"

"Hang on Tadashi."

Yamaguchi's smile dropped and he lowered back into the cushions. Right… Tsukishima had better things to do.

Yamaguchi went back to his book and thirty minutes later, Tsukishima came back dry and went into the kitchen. Yamaguchi pretended to read, watching Tsukishima.

Why wasn't he even saying hi? Was he just in a bad mood?

"Shit… Are we out of eggs?"

"Mhmm."

Tsukishima sighed. He looked up, breathing out slowly. "Have you ate lunch?"

"N-no…"

Tsukishima looked over. "Really?"

Yamaguchi closed his mouth. He looked back to his book and turned the page.

"Tadashi? Why aren't you trying to talk back?"

Yamaguchi looked up. He tapped his mouth and shook his head.

"But you can say really basic things."

"Mhmm."

"So you're just going to say nothing at all?"

"Mhmm."

Tsukishima leaned against the counter. "I'm going to need to leave at three. I close the library today."

Yamaguchi's heart dropped. He was going to be alone until ten. His flareups happened between six and eleven. He was going to spend hours alone without being able to get to his medicine or food or water. It was like he was an animal.

"Do you want to go ahead and eat now? I was going to save the food for dinner but if you're hungry you can have it."

Yamaguchi nodded.

Tsukishima heated the food and gave it to him, still not relaxed at all.

Yamaguchi tried to hug and kiss Tsukishima but the other male kept pulling away and huffing. It was odd. He never got this grumpy.

"Tsuki."

"What?"

Yamaguchi picked up his I love you card and showed it to him. Tsukishima watched him hold the card and saw the stronger tremor. Then he looked at his eyes and saw the redness.

"How much have you cried today oh my God…" Tsukishima leaned closer and held him, rubbing his hair. "I'm sorry. I should have let you sleep and tell Suga to give you something to eat at eleven. You needed the sleep and I probably scared you."

Yamaguchi hugged him tightly, smiling. "Mm!" He kissed Tsukishima's cheek and just held onto him.

"Would you like to come to work with me?"

"Mhmm!"

"You'll need to change but I can make that happen."

Yamaguchi nodded. He kissed Tsukishima and forced his legs up on the couch. He laid in his partner's lap, getting a quick nap before eating and heading out. Still, he didn't ask why he hadn't been home for the morning.
