The End of a Beginning
Just as I was about to exit the tent, I heard a loud commotion on the bridge. Gale paled and peeked outside the tent.
"No...not today...I told her..." he muttered angrily.
"What? What's going on?" Landon asked, confused.
I racked my brain, searching for one specific memory. Aileen had said something about attacking Guenith Bridge. But when?
Meanwhile, Gale answered, "We had plans. Plans to kill you and then to invade Guenith Bridge. Of course, that was before..." he trailed off, silently nodding in my direction.
I turned to them, and whispered, "Now's my chance. Revenge is mine."
Gale shook his head, cupping his hand under my chin. "No. I can't lose you."
"Who's to say I'm going to die?" I croaked, my throat feeling dry.
Landon squeezed my shoulders reassuringly. "See you in the Underworld."
I twisted around and looked at both of them in horror. "You're coming with me?"
Landon nodded. "Once a Ranger, always a Ranger. And Rangers have each other's backs."
Gale smiled. "See you in the Underworld."
I grinned. Tears stung my eyes. "Before I, you know..." I trailed off, then strengthened my resolve, and continued, "I have to do something."
They both paused and looked at me curiously. I sighed, and turned toward Gale. I moved closer to him and rested my hands on his chest. I thought about all the times he had comforted me, all the times he had stood with me, I thought about every single moment spent with him.
"I love you," I whispered, staring into his beautiful eyes.
His face morphed, changing from confusion to exuberance. "I do too."
And our lips crashed onto each others. It was a short and sweet kiss, but I'm glad I did it. His lips were soft, and I dragged my hand through his hair. Finally, I released him, and we turned toward Landon, blushing.
"For revenge," I stated.
"For revenge," they replied.
We charged out of the tent, screaming and cursing at the Thanuks. Aileen turned toward me with a look of shock on her face.
"T-Thalia," she stammered.
"That's Raven to you," I replied smugly.
I unsheathed my dagger, and began attacking her. But she was faster than me, and I found myself going on the defensive. Thanuk surrounded me, trying to protect their queen. Desperate, I stabbed my knife into where her heart would be. Miraculously, I struck her heart. Her sword clattered to the ground, and she fell, limp, to the ground. Now, the Thanuk were angry.
One stabbed my arm, another my leg, and I desperately tried to defend myself from the millions around me. I backed up, and felt someone's back rub against mine. I tilted my head a little, and saw that Landon and Gale were fighting off the people behind me. Because my focus had been diverted, a spear sliced through my stomach. I heard my dagger fall to the ground, and I fell to the ground next to it.
I felt tired, drained. I just wanted to slip into sleep. But I knew that if I did, I would never wake up again. My vision was darkening, and I faintly felt Gale fall next to me. I saw Landon fall a few feet away from us.
I gathered enough strength to turn towards Gale. Gale was fading away, fast. I stretched out my hand and grabbed his. He smiled faintly, and whispered hoarsely, "I love you."
Tears streaked down my cheek, and I replied, "I love you too."
And the world faded into darkness...
