Confessions
Kendrick sat with his teammates at the far end of the gym, the sound of bouncing basketballs echoing in the background as they cooled down after a tough practice. He wiped the sweat from his brow and stretched his legs out, feeling the familiar ache in his muscles.
"Man, you're quiet tonight," Alex, one of his closest friends, remarked, nudging him with his elbow. "You've been distracted all day. What's up?"
Kendrick shifted uncomfortably in his seat. He had been distant, his mind not on the game, but on her—Zara. Her smile, the way her eyes lit up when she talked about her friends, the way her voice had caught when she asked about his day... It had all been replaying in his mind since practice started.
"I don't know, man," Kendrick replied, dragging his fingers through his hair. "I've just been thinking about a lot of stuff."
"About what? The game?" Tyler asked. "You've been killing it out there. You were on fire during the scrimmage."
Kendrick forced a grin. "Yeah, I guess. But it's more than that. I don't know how to say this, but..." He trailed off, trying to gather his thoughts.
"You're in love with her, aren't you?" Alex's voice was low but knowing. Kendrick froze.
"What?" He looked at his friend, eyes wide with disbelief. "What are you talking about?"
"I'm talking about Zara," Alex said matter-of-factly. "We've all seen how you act when she's around. You're different when she's nearby, Kendrick. Hell, even your shot was off today, and that never happens."
Kendrick's chest tightened. It was true. He couldn't deny it anymore. Every time Zara was near, his heart beat faster. The way she laughed, how she listened to him even when he didn't know what to say... It made him feel like he was on top of the world, but also like he was in freefall.
"I didn't think it was that obvious," Kendrick muttered, rubbing his temples. "I didn't mean for it to be."
Tyler leaned forward, giving Kendrick a look that was half amusement, half understanding. "Dude, it's obvious to anyone who knows you. The way you light up when she's around, how you always look for her when you're talking. You've got it bad."
Kendrick sighed, running his hand through his hair again. "I didn't plan on it, okay? I just... I don't know. I don't know what to do about it. She's not like the girls I usually hang around with, and I don't want to mess up our friendship."
Alex grinned. "You're overthinking it. You like her, she likes you, so what's the problem?"
"What if she doesn't like me the same way?" Kendrick asked, his voice quieter now. The fear crept in. He wasn't sure if Zara felt the same. He never wanted to risk their friendship by making things weird.
"You won't know unless you try, man," Tyler said with a shrug. "Besides, Zara's not one to play games. If she's feeling you, she'll let you know."
Kendrick leaned back against the bench, staring at the floor. He thought about the way Zara always smiled at him, how she'd teased him about his competitive nature, and how she made him feel like he could do anything when they worked together on the court during those pickup games.
But there was something deeper, something more real. She saw him, not as the star basketball player or the popular guy at school, but as Kendrick—the guy who got nervous before big games, who had his doubts, and who was still figuring things out.
"I don't know if I can do this," Kendrick said, shaking his head. "I mean, what if I screw it up?"
Alex slapped him on the back. "You won't know until you try, man. It's better to know than to sit around wondering what could've been."
The gym lights flickered as the final whistle blew, signaling the end of practice. Kendrick stood up, feeling a weight in his chest. He wasn't sure what to do next, but he knew one thing for sure—he couldn't keep ignoring how he felt about Zara.
"Thanks, guys," Kendrick muttered, gathering his things and heading for the locker room. He needed to clear his head.
As he walked down the hallway, he found himself thinking of Zara again. How could he not? She was the only one who made him feel like he mattered in a way no one else ever had. Maybe it was time to stop running from the truth.
Maybe it was time to tell her how he felt.
The evening air was cool as Kendrick stood outside the gym, pacing back and forth near the entrance. His heart was racing, thudding against his ribs in a frantic rhythm. The sound of distant chatter from the other students faded into the background, his entire focus consumed by the thought of Zara.
He had never been nervous about anything in his life—well, nothing that mattered. But this? This felt like everything.
It wasn't just about liking her; it was about the depth of the feelings he had for her. About how everything in his life had felt a little emptier before she came into it, and now, it felt like he was drowning in her absence. His thoughts of her were constant, and his heart... his heart had no room left for anything but her.
Kendrick's phone buzzed in his pocket, and he nearly jumped out of his skin. He pulled it out, seeing Zara's name flash on the screen. She had texted, just like she always did after practice.
"Hey! You around? Was thinking we could grab some food after today's madness. Let me know :)"
His finger hovered over the screen for a long moment before he finally typed out his response.
"I need to talk to you. In person. Can you meet me by the bleachers after your team's done?"
The seconds felt like hours as he waited for her reply, but it came quickly.
"Of course. I'll be there."
He tucked his phone away, feeling his palms turn clammy. His stomach twisted in knots. What if she didn't feel the same? What if his words ruined everything between them? The thought made him feel like he was choking.
But there was no going back now. He had to do this. He couldn't keep pretending that nothing was there when everything he felt screamed otherwise.
He took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. His sneakers squeaked on the gym floor as he walked towards the bleachers. He had been avoiding this moment for far too long, but now, with the evening sky dimming and the world around him quieting down, he had no more excuses.
Zara's bubbly laugh echoed through the gym before he even saw her. She came into view, her long ponytail swaying behind her as she jogged toward him. Her face lit up when she saw him, that familiar warmth in her eyes. But when she noticed the serious expression on his face, her smile faltered, and she slowed her pace.
"Kendrick?" she asked, a hint of concern in her voice. "You okay?"
He swallowed, his throat dry, but his voice came out steady. "Yeah, I just... I need to tell you something. It's been on my mind for a while, and I can't hold it in anymore."
Zara tilted her head, looking at him with a mix of curiosity and concern. "What's going on?"
Kendrick's chest tightened. There was a weight in his words, something heavier than the simple confession he had imagined in his head. This wasn't just about liking her. This was about the way she made him feel, the way everything in his life seemed brighter with her in it.
"Zara," he started, his voice soft but firm, "I've been thinking about this for weeks, maybe longer. And I've been scared to say anything because... I didn't want to mess things up between us. I didn't want to risk our friendship."
Zara's eyes softened as she stepped a little closer, a warm smile tugging at the corner of her lips. "Kendrick, you're not gonna mess anything up. You know you can always talk to me, right?"
He nodded, but his heart still pounded painfully in his chest. He took a breath, steadying himself before pushing forward.
"But that's the thing, Zara. I've been lying to myself about how I feel about you. For so long, I told myself I was just... caught up in the excitement, you know? But it's not that. I've been trying to ignore it, trying to tell myself that maybe this is just some stupid crush, but it's not. It's deeper than that. It's more real than anything I've ever felt."
Zara's expression shifted, a hint of confusion dancing in her eyes. Kendrick continued, his voice growing more earnest with every word.
"You make me feel things I can't even explain. I can't stop thinking about you, about your laugh, the way you light up when you talk about volleyball, the way when you laugh while eating you burp after, how you dance, how you sing with your siblings, how you always smile no matter what's going on, the way you make everything feel... possible. And I know it sounds crazy, but every time you're near, I feel like I'm actually alive. Like, really alive. And I've been scared to admit that to you, because what if you don't feel the same way? What if this ruins everything?"
There was a long pause. Kendrick held his breath, his heart in his throat, waiting for her to say something, anything. The silence stretched on, and just as he began to think he might've made the biggest mistake of his life, Zara took a step forward.
"Kendrick," she said, her voice a soft, almost reverent whisper. "Are you... are you telling me you like me? Like, really like me?"
His heart jumped. "Yes," he breathed out, his chest heaving. "I like you. More than I should. I care about you, Zara. More than I've ever cared about anyone, and I'm terrified that I've messed everything up by saying this, but I had to tell you."
Zara's lips parted slightly, her eyes wide as if she were processing his words. Kendrick held his breath, waiting for the blow of rejection, the cool distance that would push them back into the comfort of friendship. But instead, something changed in her eyes—a spark that hadn't been there before.
Zara's hands trembled slightly as she reached out, her fingers brushing against his. A smile slowly spread across her face, and Kendrick felt his heart lurch.
"You have no idea how long I've been waiting for you to say that," she said, her voice trembling with excitement. "I thought maybe I was the only one who felt like this."
Kendrick blinked, disbelief flooding through him. "You... you feel the same way?"
Zara nodded, her eyes bright. "Kendrick, I've always liked you. Ever since we first started talking, I felt this... pull, like we just clicked. But I didn't want to pressure you. You're always so focused, and I didn't want to make things weird. But I've been hoping that you'd feel the same way." Zara rambled.
For a moment, all the tension in Kendrick's chest dissolved, replaced by a rush of warmth. He could hardly believe it. The girl of his dreams felt the same way about him? His heart soared.
Without thinking, he stepped closer to her, pulling her into a gentle hug. "I can't believe this is real," he whispered against her hair, his voice thick with emotion. "I've wanted this for so long."
Zara laughed, her voice light and musical. "Well, I guess we've both been pretty bad at figuring out how to admit this."
Kendrick pulled back, his hands still resting on her shoulders as he looked into her eyes. "So, does this mean...?"
Zara grinned, her usual bubbly energy back in full force. "Yeah, Kendrick. It means we can finally do all that couple stuff like eat off each other, sleepovers, sleeping on the phone."
"Its true, your really mine" A bright smile was no plastered across her face.
He grinned back, feeling the weight of the world lift from his shoulders. "And you're mine."
As they stood there, the world seemed to fade away. It was just them now, no worries, no fears. Only the promise of something real, something they'd both been longing for.
