Twenty-Four

The next evening, Calliope ate her dinner hastily before bidding Fred, Natalie, George and Lee goodbye and heading off to her detention with Umbridge.

As Calliope made her solitary way towards Umbridge's office she vaguely wondered what horrible task Umbridge had in store for her, surely it would be something arduous, perhaps polishing the trophies in the trophy room without magic.

Calliope knocked lightly on the door, "come in," Umbridge's girlish voice said. Calliope steeled herself and pushed the door open, and was hit with a wave of pink.

The walls were lined with decorative plates with grumpy looking kittens painted on them, who were mewing in a halfhearted manner, the sections of wall that were not covered in kitten plates could be seen to be painted pink. There was a fluffy pink rug on the floor, on which sat a desk which was made of dark wood. All of the stationary (even the parchment) was also pink. In pride of place, on a chair behind the desk sat Umbridge, at first glance Calliope had not spotted her, as her pink clothes and the large bow in her hair blended in so well with the room that she could have been wearing camouflage.

"Sit Miss Doge," Umbridge smiled and gestured at the second chair, which was on the side of the desk nearest to the door, Calliope eyed the chair, ensuring that it was not jinxed, before she sat down on the seat, keeping her hands in her lap.

"Now Miss Doge, do you know why you are here with me tonight?" Umbridge looked expectantly at Calliope, her false smile not faltering one bit.

"No," Calliope responded.

"You are here because you disrespected me," said Umbridge as if she was spelling out 1+1=2, "and by respecting me, you have disrespected the ministry of magic itself. So tonight you will be writing some lines for me. I would like you to write 'I will not disrespect the ministry of magic'."

"What with?" Calliope asked, "I don't have a quill or parchment."

"Not to worry, you will be using a very special quill of mine," Umbridge gave a girlish laugh as she opened one of her desk drawers and pulled out a rather odd looking quill. The feather was pure black, incredibly long and thin and extremely sharp. Umbridge passed Calliope the quill, along with a roll of pink parchment.

"How many times?" Calliope asked.

"As long as it takes," Umbridge smiled again.

"I don't have any ink."

"I assure you Miss Doge, you will not be needing any ink."

Calliope frowned slightly as she unrolled the parchment, and readied herself to begin writing. How did this quill work without ink? Was it like those pens that a Muggle-born Hufflepuff had sold to many of the students a few years ago? Did it have a self-inking charm upon it?

I will not disrespect the ministry of magic, Calliope wrote the first line. The ink that came out of the quill was a strange gleaming red colour, and it smelled slightly metallic.

I will not disrespect the ministry of magic, She wrote again, the back of her left hand began to ich.

I will not disrespect the ministry of magic, she scratched the back of her left hand with her right hand.

I will not disrespect the ministry of magic, she scratched her hand again, and this time the back of her left hand felt wet and sticky, she glanced up to see that her hand was bleeding slightly. The cut that had formed on the back of her hand spelt out the exact phrase that she had written on her parchment, the 'y' was even written in the same way. Just as soon as she had read it, the message vanished from her hand.

Calliope looked up from the paper and gave Umbridge an accusatory look. Umbridge smiled at her sweetly. Calliope continued to write I will not disrespect the ministry hundreds or maybe thousands of times. Every time the cut reappeared on her hand it healed again almost immediately. Umbridge grew visibly more confused as the hours drew on and the wound continued to heal.

As it grew closer to midnight Umbridge grew more irritated, and eventually was forced to dismiss Calliope, who walked back to her dorm staring at her hand the entire way.
