Twenty one
"And he just left?" Shuri asked as she typed up something on her wrist computer.
"Yes", Emil groaned. He rested his head on the cold metal of Shuri's work table, resisting the urge to bash his brains out. After the argument with Peter, Emil had spent about a hour crying. Eventually he got up and brought two tubs of Ben n' Jerry's and teleported into Shuri's lab. The princess was fine with seeing him, especially since he brought ice cream. "I lied to him Shuri. I should have just told him who I was when I found out he was Spider-Man".
"I'm sure he'll get over it", Shuri answered positively, her Wakanda accent twisting the words. She paused in her work long enough to take a spoon of fish food ice cream and stick it into her mouth. "He probably has stuff to figure out", she murmured once she had swallowed.
"I just hope that he is not doing anything reckless", Emil sighed. "I miss him". And he did. For some reason, Peter's presence soothed him. The other boy was just so reliable and bubbly. Emil smiled just thinking about him.
"Uugh", Shuri muttered as she spotted Emil's expression. "Stop being sappy and go and apologise". She kicked him under the table. Emil sent her a hurt look as he rubbed his shin.
"That reminds me", Shuri stood up and brought up a holographic screen. "I analysed the footage of your meltdown yesterday-"
"Sorry about that", Emil apologised bashfully.
"-and I noticed that there's a abnormal amount of energy surrounding you". The screen pulled up an image of Emil in the throne room. His body language was tense and he was in the middle of yelling at Steve. "Notice how the image is slightly blurred around you", Shuri pointed and Emil nodded. "Your body is basically a conductor of energy. It stores it and releases it in bursts which is why there is light when you teleport. But your body can only hold so much. When you get seriously low then you become sick and feverish. But when you get emotionally unstable or can't contain your energy, then the energy explodes out of you in waves". The image started moving. Emil watched himself teleport out of the room, sending blue light exploding around him.
"So basically I'm a walking bomb", he stated.
"Yep", Shuri seemed too happy about this. "Just don't become emotionally unstable".
Emil gave her a look. "I'm a teenage superhero with boy troubles and exams. Emotional stability is not an option".
"Relax, I'm working on something", Shuri hushed him. Her fingers flew over the keys of the screen, brining up sketches. "I'm designing you a suit that will contain and manage yours energy levels. This will hopefully allow you to gain more control over your abilities".
Emil smiled for the first time that day. Shuri really was amazing. "You're the best Shuri".
He would have said more but a beeping stopped him. Pulling out his phone, he glanced at the notification. "Shuri, can you access the news in New York?"
Seconds later, the news feed popped up on the holographic screen. "Spider-Man was seen at the scene", a blond news reporter was saying. "Eyewitness accounts recall that he got into a fight with a group of men when a weapon was discharged. The weapon cut the ferry in half. Despite Spider-Man's best efforts, it was iron man who saved the day".
Emil watched the screen, his breath in his throat. He wasn't sure how to feel. Upset, worried, angry, concerned?
"Woah", Shuri exclaimed, popping another spoon of ice cream in her mouth as footage of the wrecked ferry was shown. "That's impressive".
"If you're nothing without the suit then you shouldn't have it". Those words changed themselves around Peter's head as he knocked on his apartment door. He felt awful. He couldn't save the ferry, he let down mr Stark, and he ruined his relationship with Emil.
May opened the door and upon seeing Peter, stormed into the living room. "I've been calling your phone. Why did you not answer? Yesterday You disappear to Emil's and then this ferry thing happens. I've called five police stations. Five", she ranged.
"Aunt may", Peter tried to interrupt.
"I even called Ned's mother", she continued.
"Aunt May I'm fine. May relax, I'm fine".
She stood up suddenly and whirled around to face him. "Cut the bullshit", she swore. "I know you left detention. I know you left your hotel room in Washington. I know you sneak out of this house every night. Peter you have to tell me what's going on", she pleaded.
Peter felt like he was going to break. Every word his aunt said just pushed him further. Tears welled up in his eyes. "I lost the stark internship", he whispered. "I just thought I could work really hard.... and I screwed it up". He sunk into a chair as May came over and ran her hands through his hair.
"It's okay", she soothed.
"It's not", Peter cried. "I ruined my friendship with Emil. I made him cry May. He just looked so down. And now I've lost the internship", he drew a big shuddering breath. Burying his head into May's side, he spoke in a small voice. "I'm sorry I made you worry".
May patted his shoulder and leaned down to kiss his head. "I'm not trying to ruin your life you know. I just get worried about you", she sighed. She sniffed his head. "Peter, you should go and take a shower. You smell like garbage".
Peter chuckled drying and got up, heading for the bathroom. He was still feeling horrible, but a tiny bit less.
