CHAPTER 09

[1.05]

TWO CUPS IN HAND, APRIL APPROACHED SSA HOTCHNER'S OFFICE.

Once she reached the top of the steps, she softly knocked on the open door. Hotch was standing there, speaking on the phone. He held up one finger towards her before facing away.

She stood there for a moment, waiting for his conversation to finish. It was clear that he was speaking to his wife.

"Everything all right?" April asked as he put the phone down,

"Yeah." Hotch sighed, walking over and taking one of the coffees from her fingers, "The doctors are worried about Haley's blood-sugar levels. They're worried about pre-eclampsia and I'm worried she's not gonna last 6 weeks in bed."

"Ah, the beauty of child birth." April smiled as they walked out of his office and towards the conference room,

"Is it here?" Hotch asked her,

"Wouldn't be up here if it wasn't." April replied.

Hotch turned towards the open office area, "Reid, Morgan document's up on the screen regarding the kidnapping of Trish Davenport." The two agents began to follow them up the steps,

"Have you read them yet?" April asked,

"Yeah, got a copy from the document examiner." He answered,

"What's it say?" Agent Morgan asked,

April looked over her shoulder at the man, "That we've got until 8:00 tonight."

Everyone gathered in the conference room and read the letter that was on the screen, "'You will follow instructions carefully. You will do this to ensure the safety of your daughter. You will wait for the call. You will answer the call at 8:00 P. M. You will write down the instructions and follow them to the letter'." Spencer recited,

April crossed her arms, "That gives us less than 9 hours to get to Connecticut work up victimology on Trish Davenport and prepare her father for the ransom drop."

"How do we know the letter's real?" Gideon asked,

"The handwriting is a match for Trish's. He dictated it to her, and they found saline on the paper." Hotch answered,

"Her tears." Gideon stated,

"He never says 'I'." Morgan commented, "He doesn't say 'I will call'. He says, 'you will answer the call'. He's distancing himself from the kidnapping. If he said 'I', he'd be taking responsibility for it."

"There's also another missing element." Hotch continued,

"No mention of the police." Elle said, "Ransom notes almost always forbid police involvement."

"So is he expecting law enforcement to get involved?" Hotch asked,

"Well, if he's expecting us, let's not disappoint him."

Once briefed, the BAU plus April made their way to the air strip and boarded the jet. She handed out the files for the case before sitting down across from Hotch,

"Everyone familiar with the father?" She asked,

"Evan Davenport, U. S. Attorney, executive assistant southern district, New York. widower assigned U. S. Marshals 3 times in the past 10 years due to death threats." Reid listed off and April smirked in his direction,

"Is the protective detail still current?" Derek asked,

Hotchner nodded, "Around the clock, but Trish declined protection when she turned 18."

"Too bad for the boyfriend."

"But why kill him?" Spencer asked,

"Well, if I'm gonna kidnap someone I know I have to take out whoever's with them." April commented,

"It says here she's got a sister." Derek stated,

"Cheryl." Hotch confirmed,

"Any problems? Were they close?" He questioned,

"Yeah." Spencer turned around in his seat to show Derek a photograph of the two sisters, "They're identical twins."

Once they landed in Connecticut, half of the team and April drove to the attorney's house while the other went to the scene where Trish was kidnapped.

Mr. Davenport greeted them at the door, "Please, come in. I have 6 people on my staff. I have 3 bodyguards. They've all had polygraphs. Everybody's been vetted." He told them as they walked in and looked around.

"And they all have alibis for the night of the kidnapping?" Hotch asked,

"All accounted for by the local FBI field office." Mr. Davenport answered, "Cheryl flew in yesterday. I'm just making sure that she's not alone even for-" He paused and rubbed his fingers across his face, "Sorry. I just feel like I'm suffocating here. I just want somebody to tell me that she's ok."

April gave him a look of sympathy, "We understand, Mr. Davenport, and we'll do all that we can to find your daughter and arrest her kidnapper."

"Dr. Reid..." Gideon looked behind Mr. Davenport at the youngest member of the BAU, "What do the statistics tell us?"

"If you follow their instructions and give them the money your daughter will be returned." Spencer told them,

"Done." Another agent spoke up, "This house is bug free."

"All right, bring it in!" Agents began to bring in their tracking and tracing equipment, preparing for the call the unsub said would happen,

"So, what are your theories so far about this kidnapper?" Mr. Davenport asked,

"That he targeted you for a reason. Every line of the letter starts with the word 'you'. He's angry at you probably feels like you owe him. That everything you own, you don't deserve." Gideon informed him,

"And from the language in the ransom we most likely believe that he's working alone." Hotchner finished,
