CHAPTER 08
AGENT BERRY SAT AT HER DESK, FILLING OUT HER REPORT FROM HER TIME IN FLORIDA WHEN A COFFEE CUP WAS PLACED IN FRONT OF HER.
She glanced up and smiled, "You sure know how to treat a lady, Hotch." She set down her pen and grabbed the cup before leaning back in her chair,
"You deserve it after our last case. Bale is a sensitive subject for you." He stated, leaning against the desk across from her,
April shrugged, "He isn't going anywhere any time soon. And dealing with Walker kinds seemed like a redo. It won't bring back those six agents... but no one else will get hurt because of them."
"What you said to Bale. The apology... did you mean it?" Hotch asked,
"Which part?"
"Saying it was your fault."
April bit her lip and looked down at her coffee in her hands, "I made the call to send them in."
"You had to clear the building first." Hotch reasoned, "The hostage was still in there."
"But if we would've read his behaviour sooner, at least six people could've been saved." April argued,
"April, you didn't make Bale or Walker kill those people." Hotch replied,
"But I couldn't save them either." April sighed and set her coffee down, "What are you doing up here, Hotch?"
"Just wanted to make sure you're okay." He answered,
"I don't see you questioning Gideon." She replied,
"Yeah, but Gideon's-"
"Gideon." April smirked. She grabbed some files and stood up, "I'm fine, Aaron, really. We all have those tough cases that stick to us for a while, but I'll get over it." She told him as they both walked towards the elevator. She pressed the button and turned back towards Hotch, "Thank you for the coffee."
"Anytime."
Th elevator doors opened and April handed him one of the files, "Here's my report. Need you to sign off on it and send it back to the boss man."
"Will do." Aaron smiled before stepping into the elevator, "See you around."
"Say hi to Haley for me." The elevator doors closed and April walked down the corridor to the copy room.
"He's cute." Jessi, who worked in the filing room, stated as she followed April,
"He's married." April joked,
"So? That doesn't stop most people." Jessi replied,
"Well, it stops me." April pulled out the blank report papers and began making copies, "Plus, his wife is like seven months pregnant."
"Oooo, Daddy Hotchner, that has a nice ring to it." Jessi grinned,
"Oh, now that takes it too far, Jes." April rolled her eyes,
"Come on, April, you need some action in your life." Jessi moaned, leaning against the wall, "When was the last time you got any?"
April scoffed, "I get plenty. Just because I don't go around bragging about my dating life like you do doesn't mean it's non-existent."
"If you say so." Jessi sang as April grabbed her papers and left the room again,
"Miss Gartner, don't you have files to scan?" Unit Chief Warner raised his eyebrows as he stopped in front of the two woman,
"Yes, sir." Jessi mumbled before walking away,
"Agent Berry." Unit Chief Warner greeted,
"Agent Warner." April grinned as she walked back towards the bullpen,
"I heard about what happened in Palm Beach. I just wanted to say good job." Warner stated, opening the door for her.
"Thank you, sir, but without Agent Hotchner's team we wouldn't have been able to successfully figure out the motives of the bomber. Nor would we have saved the hostage." April set her papers on her desk and turned to face her Unit Chief once again, "Do you need something, sir?"
"Agent Hotchner mentioned your leadership skills. Along with your behavioural analysis skills." Warner crossed his arms,
"What are you getting at?" April asked, grabbing her coffee,
"Strauss wants you to join the BAU." Warner stated,
"Another transfer request?" April sighed, running her fingers through her hair, "Sir, we've already had this discussion. I like it here and I have no urge to join the BAU at the moment."
Warner nodded, "Okay, I'll let her know."
