The Ride
"Alright honey, I'll see you later!" My mom said, walking out the door to her work. "See you!" I heard the door close. I walked out of the bathroom, fully ready. I grabbed my coat and schoolbag and headed downstairs. Young-Do said he would walk me to school today. Was this really true and not a trick he might play on me? Who knows! He keeps me guessing all the time.
I rushed to the elevator and pressed the button to take me down to the lobby. After a few seconds, the doors opened and I walked out into the lobby. It sure was a nice hotel, but I couldn't see myself calling it home. I walked out the revolving doors and looked out into the street. I saw many people crossing up and down, some going to work, others going to school, but I didn't see the one person I was looking for.
I walked down the few steps in front of the hotel and peered closer into the city streets. Still no Young-Do. Yep, it was a trick. "Can't believe I fell for it." I sighed to myself. I put it in my mind to rip him a new one when I got to school. I started walking in the general direction I needed to go when all of a sudden a car's horn beeps really loudly. "Yah, newbie!" A familiar voice yelled.
I turned around to see a long, black limousine behind me. In the backseat, the window was rolled down and who was sitting there but Choi Young-Do. "Where are you going? You know I said I'd pick you up." I looked at him. "I thought we were going to be walking." He shook his head. "I tired myself out yesterday." I chuckled. "Now who's out of shape?" I teased. He sighed. "Stop talking and get in." I was surprised. Inside of his limousine? Me? The person who he called poor just yesterday was going to ride with him in his big, fancy limousine? "Are you sure?" I asked him. He gave me an irritated look. "Just get in." I felt the chills coming so I quickly opened the door to the backseat. He scooted over as I climbed inside.
I lost my footing and fell into the car, the door slamming behind me. Everything was fine, my head didn't get bumped, my foot didn't get stuck in the door, nothing was bleeding or bruised. However, I didn't notice that I fell directly on top of Young-Do. "Oh shoot." I said in a hushed tone as I stared at him. I quickly got off and backed into the corner of my seat. "Sorry." I apologized, feeling freaked out and slightly scared that he'd kick me out of the car or something. To my surprise, he didn't look mad. He didn't even look annoyed. He looked kind of...flustered? His cheeks were really red and his eyes were kind of bugging out. "Why are you so clumsy? You can't even enter a car." He whined in annoyance.
"Accidents happen?" I suggested. He just sighed and gestured for the driver to start heading to the school. I decided to change the subject as quickly as I could. "What are your classes for today?" He shrugged. "My schedule's in my locker. I'll check when I see it, or when I get called out by the teachers. You?" I looked through all my files and folders to find my schedule, neatly organized in a yellow folder containing all my important school files. "A lot. Math, science, English, and plenty more." I frowned a little. Suddenly, Young-Do's eyes fixated on a piece of paper in my folder. He yanked it out and started reading it.
"Wha- hey! Give that back!" I yelled as I struggled to reach my paper. He just pushed me away with one hand and held the letter up high with the other, reading it all the while. "I just want to see what it is!" He argued. I huffed and stopped trying to get it back. It was no use anyways. "Transfer papers? This isn't any school I've ever heard of." When he was off his guard, I snatched the papers back and put them into my folder again. Young-Do looked at me, his signature smirk returning upon his face. "Why didn't you tell me we were in the same grade level?" I shrugged. "I don't know, I guess I didn't think it was that important." He huffed and looked straight ahead. "Now I know we're both going to be graduating at the end of the school year. I should raise the price of my fee." I scowled at him. "You better not. I'm already super nervous about that price as is."
He smiled at me. "There's no need to be nervous. It's not that much of a price." "Why should I believe you? Seems like something you'd say to lull me into a false sense of security." I mused. He sighed. "You're so cynical." I knew that I had got it right. "What kind of school did you go to? I've never heard of that weird name." "I was home schooled all my life. This is actually the first public school I've been to." I told him. He looked a bit shocked to hear that news. "You can't be serious. You've never been to public school? Wow, you're really making yourself a target. My job as a bodyguard is going to be much tougher than I thought." I sighed at him and stared out the window. "You can always quit if it gets too hard." He looked offended at the suggestion. "I'm not a quitter." I turned back to look at him with a smile. He smiled right back at me.
"Mr. Choi, we've arrived." The driver announced from the front seat. "Perfect." Young-Do got out of his side and before I was able to open my door, he slammed it shut. Then he opened it himself. "A gentleman always opens the door for a lady." I rolled my eyes and got out of the car. "You could have taken my finger off, you know." "Nah, I'm careful." I thanked the driver graciously and watched him drive off. I turned around to see the same building that was looming over me the other day. For some reason, it didn't look as threatening today. Young-Do stepped to the side of me and stretched out his arms. "Another day of this." He announced. I smiled. "I know!" He raised an eyebrow. "And you're happy about that?" "Yeah, I like school." I feigned shock, putting my hand over my mouth. "Oh, I forgot, I'm talking to number 98." I smirked and started walking towards the doors. Young-Do frowned and chased after me. "Yah, what makes you think you can just say things like that!?"
I just laughed.
