A Special Moment
"Alright class, remember to turn in your project on Friday. See you tomorrow." The teacher packed up her things and walked out of class. Everyone started to either head out of the classroom or stay until the next teacher came in the room. I packed up my things and went out of the classroom to find Young-Do. I wanted to make sure he was okay. I couldn't stand thinking that there was something wrong with him. I walked down the hallways, to the staircase, down the stairs, out the doors, and into the courtyard where I saw him earlier.
I looked around to see nobody in the courtyard except for a few students. There was no sign of Young-Do anywhere. I didn't get a chance to see where he went since the teacher had called me out. He could be anywhere! I went to the right of the courtyard past the water feature. There were a bunch of hedges and flower gardens in the front of the school. It was so beautiful, but I just couldn't enjoy it. Suddenly, I saw somebody sitting on a bench surrounded by a various assortment of flowers and plant-life.
"Young-Do?" I asked. He raised his eyes from the ground to lock with mine. "Hey, newbie." Yeah, he was definitely depressed. "What happened with that girl?" He looked surprised. "Rachel? How did you know about that?" "Please, you were right down there making a ruckus while I was in class. I always have the window seat." He looked up at the school building and sighed. "So, what happened?" I asked. He scooted over and patted the seat next to him. I took the hint and sat right next to him.
"It was just the same as the last time. She's always threatening to tell my dad that..." He trailed off. I looked at him. "That what?" He hesitated to tell me, but got on with it. "That I've been hanging out with you." I was a little stunned, but I understood what he meant. "Oh. Is it because I'm not rich?" He gravely nodded. I sighed. "That's part of it." He said. "I kind of expected this. I just never expected to get as close to someone here as close as I am to you." Young-Do looked at me with an expression I had never seen before. Surprise, gratefulness, and kindness. It was such a surprise from the usual Young-Do.
"That means a lot to me." Was all he said. But I could tell he meant more in that one sentence than he cared to share. "Am I causing too many problems for you?" I asked him. He looked at me. "No, no you're not causing any problems. Rachel is just always like this, it's not you. You don't have to worry about that." I breathed a sigh of relief. But not too much relief went out of me. I felt like this was going to be an everyday occurrence. I couldn't bear to see Young-Do like this.
"You can always come and talk to me whenever you have something - or someone - bothering you." I smiled. "You may be my bodyguard, but you're also my friend." Young-Do brightly smiled at me. I had never seen that smile before. I didn't want it to go away. "Friend. Huh." He thought aloud. "What's the matter?" I asked. "Oh, no, nothing. It's just nobody's ever called me a friend before." My face showed what a sad statement that was. I looked at Young-Do who was looking at the ground. I could tell he's never done this with anyone before.
I smiled and put my hand on top of his. He looked startled by the sudden touch, but he didn't move away. He looked down at me as I smiled up at him. "I'll always be here for you, bodyguard." He smiled at me and put his hand on top of mine. "Same here, newbie." What a tender moment this was. He got up and helped me up from the bench. "We better get going. You have music and I think I have to watch you play." I laughed. "Enjoy the piano concert then. Let's go!" We both headed off to our music section. He gave me a look that told me how grateful he was for this meeting.
I could tell this was a special moment he saved. And I did too.
