Chapter 12
After Jeongguk's accident during the track meet, nothing much happened and the track season quietly comes to an end.
Taehyung would sure to miss track but he doesn't have time to dwell on that when finals is right around the corner.
The art department also takes a break from the preparation for the Art's night as the students turn their attention to the upcoming hell week. Naturally, Taehyung does the same thing.
The dancers also took a break from their practicing that's why right now, Taehyung and Jimin are both slumped over their kitchen table with textbooks and papers almost covering the whole surface.
"What time is it?" Jimin grumbles, breaking the silence. Taehyung looks over at his friend and immediately notices the bags under his eyes and how he looks like he's two seconds away from passing out.
Taehyung grabs his phone and squints at the time.
"Uh, quarter to three?" Taehyung says, making Jimin groan.
"Fuck, I have to wake up early later," Jimin complains as he pulls at his hair. Taehyung can only feel sorry for him but at the same time, he can't help but also roll his eyes at his friend. After all, it's Jimin's fault for signing up for such an early class and now the consequences of that is biting him in the ass.
"Lesson one: don't ever sign up for an early morning class if you don't want to end up as miserable as Park Jimin right now on my kitchen table," Taehyung says with an index finger in the air and he feels Jimin kick him on the shin.
"Shut up, it's our kitchen table and I know it's my fault for signing up for it but do you always have to rub it on my face? I'm suffering enough," Jimin whines and slumps further on the table.
"Yes because it was the most idiotic thing you've ever done considering the fact that you've done a lot of idiotic things," Taehyung says and he wonders how he still has the energy to bicker like this with his roommate.
"I get it, it was idiotic. But you did more idiotic things so that's worse," Jimin retorts. It's weak but it's true.
"Okay, you got me," Taehyung says with an exaggerated sigh of defeat. He could've continued arguing with him but he took pity on Jimin's current state and decided that they really should head over to bed. "But come on, get up. You look worse than a zombie. Let's get you to bed."
Jimin whines but obliges anyway, getting up from his seat and proceeds on leaning his weight on Taehyung as they both make their way towards Jimin's room. When they get to his bed, Jimin lets himself fall on the soft cushion and has began snoring almost immediately.
The next morning, Taehyung wakes up with a pounding headache.
He huffs as he gets out of his bed and into the kitchen, where he finds that the table is still in the same state as it was from last night. This makes Taehyung groan as he brings his breakfast (a burnt toast and a bowl of soggy cereal) to the living room.
Now that he thinks about it, Taehyung hasn't done much studying for his exams despite staying up late last night. This causes him to chew at his lip nervously, the stress slowly taking over him. With his final exams starting in a few days, he doesn't feel like he has done much preparation at all and he is left once again to believe that his exams would end in failure (though, at least, the holiday break comes after to distract him).
Once he finishes his breakfast, he takes out his phone and dials Namjoon's number.
Namjoon answers the call after a couple of rings with a friendly greeting.
"Hey, Taehyung. What's up?"
"Hey, hyung. Um, I was just wondering if you could do me a favor?" Taehyung asks nervously. Then he quickly adds, "You don't have to agree to it or anything. It's fine if you don't want to."
"Sure, go ahead," Namjoon says, making Taehyung smile even though he knows the other won't see it.
"Could you open the gym after its closing hours? I know this is too much and probably unreasonable but, I think an isolated gym would really help me right now. Just a quick and quiet workout would be fine. I promise I won't make you stay later."
There was a pause from the older and Taehyung anxiously bites his lip as he waits for the other's response.
The pause becomes longer and Taehyung was about to take back his request when Namjoon finally speaks up.
"Hm, I think I could do that. It's not like I have anything important to do after my shift."
Taehyung then thanks Namjoon repeatedly, glad that he would do such a favor for him and then proceeds on promising the older that he would treat him some time.
It seems though that it was too early for Taehyung to be happy and promise such a thing to Namjoon because when he arrives at the gym later that day, the sight in front of him immediately made him seconds away from pouncing at Namjoon.
"Why is he here?" Taehyung hisses, low enough so only Namjoon can hear him in the desolated building. Namjoon nervously chuckles and Taehyung immediately feels bad for the tone of his voice.
"I'm sorry, I really am," Namjoon says, scratching his nape. "It's just that Jeongguk really needs it as well and I figured that if I tell you I invited him, you wouldn't come. I can only open the gym past its closing time very rarely so this is the only opportunity."
Taehyung calms down at that because Namjoon is right and Taehyung is just overreacting. It's not that Taehyung minds another person at the gym with him but now he does because it's Jeongguk, for reasons that are slightly different than it used to be.
Before, Taehyung would've been angered by Jeongguk's presence because of his cockiness and his behavior that irritates Taehyung to no end. But now, it's not his cockiness or his seemingly annoying nature that bothers Taehyung. It's Jeongguk's irritatingly attractive face that has been a great distraction to Taehyung for quite some time now and it seems that it's not stopping anytime soon.
Right now, he really cannot afford such distraction but he's also not going to force Jeongguk out of the gym just because he's attractive. Although, it really should be illegal to have a face and body like Jeongguk.
Taehyung lets out a breath slowly before he quietly makes his way down to the yoga mats to start doing his stretches. He was able to successfully do about ten lunges when Jeongguk finally gets up from the bench press and sees Taehyung.
"Oh?" Taehyung hears Jeongguk say quietly. If the room had more people in it, Taehyung wouldn't have been able to hear it.
Taehyung continues to not acknowledge the other's presence, hoping with his entire being that Jeongguk would just leave him alone because Taehyung is weak and admittedly hasn't forgiven himself for the times that he stared at the other.
It seems though that the universe wants to torment him when suddenly, he finds Jeongguk's figure standing in front of him. Taehyung curses under his breath.
"Kim."
It was a mistake and Taehyung really shouldn't have done it but he looks up at that, and the sight in front of him almost knocks him off of his feet.
Jeongguk, annoying, handsome, Jeongguk, is there standing in all his glory with a black muscle shirt, showcasing those arms, and a fucking snapback that entirely exposes his forehead and his strong eyebrows. A snapback. Since when did Jeon Jeongguk wear a snapback?
Taehyung has to bite down on his lip hard to stop himself from swooning right there and then.
But Taehyung composes himself before glaring at Jeongguk.
"Leave me alone, Jeon," Taehyung mutters, proceeding with his stretches.
Taehyung tries his best to ignore Jeongguk's presence, but the other is persistent and ignores what Taehyung said as usual.
"Don't you think it's the perfect time to do a challenge right now? The gym is all to ourselves." Jeongguk looks delighted by this and Taehyung almost agrees.
"Come on, Kim. I'm doing you a favor here. Empty gym means you don't have to embarrass yourself in front of other people when you lose to me," Jeongguk says with that smirk. It's the smirk that used to always get under Taehyung's skin but now, for some miracle, he finds it nothing but attractive like the rest of him. It was hot enough that he was able to brush off the insult in Jeongguk's words.
"Jeon, for the last time, just leave me alone," Taehyung tells him, feeling himself getting more stressed. He came to the gym to relax but the opposite seems to be happening, all thanks to Jeongguk.
To Taehyung's surprise, Jeongguk does leave him alone after that. Taehyung is not disappointed. No, not at all.
For the rest of the night in the gym, Taehyung was really able to get some quiet time to workout and finds himself feel more relaxed by the end of it.
Jeongguk, on the other hand, leaves the gym early without sparing Taehyung a glance as he walks out of the door. Not that Taehyung cares.
"Kim hates me."
Jeongguk slumps over the table, his lips forming into a pout. Yoongi lifts his head up to look at him and rolls his eyes as he watches him mope.
"No shit, Sherlock. Isn't that the reason why you know him in the first place? Because he insulted you? And now you hate him and he hates you?" Yoongi says as he continues mopping the floor of the cafe.
The cafe had a busy day and at the end of the night when they closed down, all of the workers had been exhausted to the bones. Ever the kind manager that he is, Yoongi sent all of them home early and tells them he could finish the clean up by himself. They were reluctant to leave him but soon enough, Yoongi was able to convince them and they left him with a chorus of farewell. Once they're out of the cafe, Yoongi gives Jeongguk a call and asks him to help him clean up.
"And I am paying you to work here, not mope around and dirtying my cafe even more when you're supposed to be helping me clean," Yoongi adds but Jeongguk, ever the brat, ignores him and continues sulking on the table.
"Your cafe is successful now. You don't need my help anymore so technically, I can just walk out of this door and never work for you again," Jeongguk says, making Yoongi glare at him. Though, he knows that the younger wasn't serious, he knows him too well, so he brushes it aside.
Although, Jeongguk is technically right. The reason that Jeongguk works at Yoongi's family owned cafe in the first place is to help the older out when Yoongi became the owner and the manager of the cafe, passed down by his parents to him.
The two of them have known each other ever since Yoongi's parents started working for the Jeon's company. Yoongi was often left at the Jeon's residence to play with Jeongguk when they were younger until they grew up with a relationship that is similar to any siblings have.
So, naturally, when Yoongi needed help during the start of managing the cafe, Jeongguk was more than willing to help out as a worker at the cafe.
Now, with the cafe's success under Yoongi's management, Jeongguk doesn't really have any more reason to stay. But, to Yoongi's slight surprise, Jeongguk remained as a worker despite his daily complaints about his job.
"Do I look like I care? Move your ass out of my cafe then," Yoongi eventually replies without venom as he continues cleaning up, still not giving the attention that Jeongguk obviously wants. He hears Jeongguk huff behind him.
"This isn't about you, hyung. Kim hates me now."
Yoongi glares at him even more.
"Why are you acting like that's anything new?"
Now, it's Jeongguk's turn to glare at him. Yoongi still doesn't understand what Jeongguk is getting at so he finally turns around to give Jeongguk a better look and, okay, he does look pretty miserable.
Sighing, Yoongi sets the mop at the side before walking over Jeongguk's slump figure.
"Alright, what's going on?"
Jeongguk looks up at him with a frown and a conflicted look on his face.
"I think Kim hates me now," Jeongguk pauses when he sees the look on Yoongi's face. "I know what you're about to say but this time it's different."
"Why don't you just get to the point? I have more important things to do than listening to you whine," Yoongi says with a roll of his eyes as he sits across Jeongguk who glares at him.
"Kim does hate me but he used to talk to me and accept my challenges at the gym. Now, he just flat out ignores me and doesn't even look me in the eye," Jeongguk explains, a pout forming until he reaches the end of his explanation. Yoongi just furrows his brows in confusion.
"So what if he ignores you? That's typically what you do to the person that you can't stand," Yoongi says, not fully understanding what Jeongguk is moping about. As he has mentioned before, it's not like it's anything new between Taehyung and Jeongguk. There have been multiple times when they ignored each other and have displayed their dislike to each other.
"T-that's not the thing," Jeongguk mumbles so quietly that Yoongi almost missed it.
"I thought you were getting to the point?"
Jeongguk sighs. "I think I know why he's suddenly acting like this. I think it might've been because I was a total jackass to him after he took care of me when I was injured."
Yoongi snaps his head at him.
"You what? I know I taught you better than that, Jeon."
"I know. I guess I was just so humiliated after being so dependent on him for a long time and owing him many things that I didn't even thank him," Jeongguk fiddles with the hem of his shirt, not being able to meet Yoongi's eyes, knowing that the older would be disappointed.
"You did not thank him?" Yoongi says in disbelief and Jeongguk cowers.
"Hyung, I know I made a mistake that's why I'm telling you this so you could help me do something about it," Jeongguk says, pleadingly. Yoongi's frown finally subsided and he settles on his chair more comfortably.
Yoongi thinks about it. The automatic solution for the problem is for Jeongguk to apologize. Whether Taehyung accepts his apology or not, at least Jeongguk would be able to get rid of his guilt and discomfort for not being grateful earlier.
Yoongi was about to open his mouth to tell him just that when he suddenly thought of something better. He realizes that a good opportunity just offered itself on a silver platter and Yoongi is not about to turn it away.
He grins before finally speaking.
"Hm, actually I might have a solution to your problem."
Jeongguk's pout immediately disappears and looks at Yoongi with wide eyes.
"Really? What is it?" Jeongguk asks eagerly.
"Don't you think it's time for you guys to stop this petty rivalry that you have going on?"
Jeongguk furrows his brows at that in confusion, tilting his head to the side.
"What does that have to do with my situation?"
"Listen to me, will you?" Yoongi snaps and Jeongguk immediately shuts his mouth and proceeds to pout.
"Okay, fine."
Yoongi nods.
"As I was saying before I was rudely interrupted, I think you shouldn't just apologize and thank him. You should also offer a peace offering and end the rather pointless and utterly bullshit hatred that you guys have for each other. It would be good for both of you and, more importantly, for everyone else that has to suffer watching both of yours and Taehyung's stupidity."
Yoongi waits for Jeongguk to process his explanation, hoping that the younger agrees instead of putting up a fight or turning down Yoongi's offer of solution.
Jeongguk only furrows his brows deeper and a look of disbelief forms on his face.
"Are you saying that you want me to be friends with him? Even you know that that's a stretch," Jeongguk says, wrinkling his nose at the thought. Yoongi can't help but roll his eyes.
"Yes, I would think so too if you truly hate him."
"I do hate him," Jeongguk exclaims almost immediately and flushes when he realizes how fast he said it.
"No you don't. If you do then explain to me what the free coffees were about? That's not something you do to a person that you hate."
Yoongi knows that Jeongguk is a good person, rarely ever seeing him have hatred towards somebody without a solid reason behind it. So even though he always talks about his 'hatred' for Taehyung, Yoongi doesn't really believe him. The way Jeongguk hesitates to respond to him now just confirms it.
"B-because I don't know how else to apologize to him. And he really did look like he needed those so..."
"See? If you hate him you wouldn't give a jackshit about apologizing to him."
Jeongguk glares at him and crosses his arms on his chest.
"Fine, I don't really hate him but it doesn't mean that I want to be friends with him."
"I'm not telling you to be friends with him. I'm just saying that you should stop fighting over nothing and everything because you're both adults and can be more mature than that. And, for the love of god, I'm tired of watching you two go for each other's throat all the time. You also seem to spend more time yapping about Taehyung rather than doing your actual job in my cafe. If my business fails, you would be at the top of my hit list."
Jeongguk opens and closes his mouth at that, not knowing how to really respond. At the end, he closes his mouth in defeat and grumbles curses under his breath.
Yoongi chuckles at him before he stands up to grab the mop he have set down earlier. There is still so much work to do and all he really wants is to finally reunite with his bed.
"What? Cat got your tongue? Well, you have his number so if you decide to finally be a big boy, then you know that Taehyung is just one call away."
Taehyung gets home feeling significantly more relaxed than earlier when he left his apartment. His time at the gym was more helpful than he initially imagined so he remembers to thank Namjoon and apologize for snapping at him earlier.
Now, he stares at Jimin's passed out figure on the couch, surrounded by open textbooks and an empty mug of, what he assumes, coffee. Taehyung tries to wake the other up, to get him to go to his room but the other won't budge. Taehyung lets out a sigh before grabbing a blanket and a pillow from Jimin's room to make his roommate comfortable in his position on the couch.
After helping Jimin out, Taehyung prepares himself to sleep. He quickly takes a shower that was much needed after being drenched with sweat and the warm water really helped relax his muscles after a tiring day.
Taehyung quickly changes out into his comfortable clothes before diving towards his bed with a sigh of relief. He feels his eyes closing on its own, probably from fatigue, but before Taehyung drifts off to sleep, he hears his phone alerting him with a message.
Taehyung doesn't want to reach for his phone on his nightstand but if someone bothered to text him this late it might be about something important.
Begrudgingly, Taehyung reaches for his phone and looks at the screen.
Taehyung almost falls out of his bed. Why is Jeongguk texting him?
From: Jeon
can we meet tomorrow?
please?
Taehyung can only blink down at Jeongguk's message and cannot believe Jeongguk just said please. Is he out of his mind?
Although the message is nothing but sketchy, Taehyung can't help the blush that creeps up to his face as he rereads the message. It's so uncharacteristically like Jeongguk but it's the first time Jeongguk has talked to him so normally and so nicely and Taehyung finds that he likes it more than he probably should.
Biting his lip, Taehyung types a short response.
To: Jeon
ok
Taehyung locks his phone once again and places it back to his nightstand. Looking up at the ceiling, he feels his heart pounding in anticipation and realizes that he's looking forward to his meeting with Jeongguk.
"Well, fuck."
