57. On Board

A week later, Laylin sat in the busy airport terminal, listening to a kid near her who was busy screeching about how he wasn't going to get on the flight because he didn't have his favorite teddy. Laylin looked over at the exasperated mother a few feet away who was rummaging through her purse to try to find something to stop the tears of the child. The mother eventually unearthed some sort of fruit snack from within her purse to give to the child which satisfied him.

"Nice to know that you're not the only crybaby today," came a voice from the phone she held in her hand.

Laylin smirked as she turned her gaze to look at the person on the video call. Jimin was currently walking down the sidewalk on his way to the hospital, giving her a small grin. He had wanted to call her to wish her a safe flight, especially since he practically had to shove her out the door that morning with her suitcase because she wouldn't leave to catch her flight. She was still having a hard time with it all.

"You're lucky we're friends," said Laylin, "And that you're on the phone right now."

Jimin cracked a wider grin that reached his eyes, shaking his head.

"Things are going to be alright, Laylin. I'm only teasing to help relax you."

"I know," said Laylin as she took a deep breath and let it out, looking over at the empty seat beside her. "I just wish things were different."

"We all do," said Jimin, "But just remember you aren't alone and neither are they."

"Okay," said Laylin; a person coming over the intercom then to announce that her flight was starting to board. "I've gotta go now, Jimin."

"Call me when you land," he said. "We all want to know you got there safely."

"I will," said Laylin as she said goodbye, turning her phone off and slipping it away.

She stood up from her seat, grabbing her carry-on luggage and purse. As she moved to get into the line for the flight, she passed the little boy who had been throwing a fit earlier and his mother. The boy was content now. Laylin wished she could feel that kind of peace.

Jimin entered the hospital shortly after hanging up with Laylin, taking the elevator up to the floor where Jungkook and Taehyung's room was. He rounded the corner to enter the room and was shocked to see that the both of them were sitting up in their beds fully awake and staring at each other. He stood in the doorway with his mouth open as Jungkook's body - who was currently facing the door to look at Taehyung's body - caught his eye.

"Jimin," said Jungkook, causing Taehyung's body to turn and look at the other.

"You two...you're awake?" asked Jimin in shock. "Are you yourselves again?"

A smile stretched across Taehyung's face as he nodded. They had both just woken up a few minutes earlier to find that they were back in their own bodies in a hospital. The last thing either of them remembered was getting hit by the car.

"How long have we been here?" asked Taehyung.

"And Laylin, where is she? Is she okay?" asked Jungkook.

Laylin looked ahead of her. She had six people to go until she reached the front of the line so she could hand her ticket to them. It seemed to be inching forward in a painstakingly slow manner. If she had to leave, she just wanted to get the journey over with so there was no going back. Right now she had to keep fighting the urge to jump out of line and run back to the hospital.

'But he's probably still in a coma,' thought Laylin as she moved forward one more spot. 'It's not like staying behind would make any difference.'

"She's not answering. She must have already switched her phone off for the flight," said Jimin as he hung up once he reached her voicemail, automatically trying to redial her number again for the hundredth time.

"Jungkook, take it easy," said Taehyung as Jungkook - upon hearing that Laylin was about to fly away - was trying to detach himself from the equipment he was hooked up to. Taehyung had gingerly gotten out of his bed to try to make sure that Jungkook didn't end up hurting himself. "We've been in a coma for several months. Don't rush yourself."

"I need to be there for her," said Jungkook. "I can't let her fly away."

"But you could just catch another flight once you get the all clear from the doctor, " said Taehyung.

"No. I need to go now," said Jungkook as he turned to fix Taehyung with a desperate, pleading look. "Please understand and help me out."

Taehyung locked his eyes with his brother before letting out a sigh, nodding his head in understanding.

"Lets get you to the airport."

Laylin boarded the plane, sitting down in a seat by the window. She buckled up and looked outside at the busy tarmac once she had tucked her carry-on underneath the seat in front of her. Her heart still felt heavy about it all. She dug her phone out of her pocket to stare at her reflection in the darkened screen. Her finger stroked over the power button on the side, willing herself not to turn it on. One of the flight attendants walking down the aisle then saw her, giving her a kind smile as she said, "The phone has to remain off for now."

"Right," said Laylin with a faint blush, tucking it away. She was sure nothing had changed anyway.

Jungkook hadn't even bothered to take the hospital gown off. Once he had unwired himself from the machinery, he had shoved his body into clothes from the hospital gift shop. It resulted in him wearing black and white checked pajama bottoms and a fuzzy red Christmas sweater. Jungkook didn't care though. He only cared about one thing and that was what kept driving him forward.

He sat in the back of an Uber, anxiously tapping his white bootie clad feet up and down on the floor. The Uber driver could feel the vibrations it caused from his seat, looking at Jungkook in the rearview mirror as he pulled to a stop at yet another stoplight.

"Is there somewhere you need to be in a hurry?"

"Yes," said Jungkook as he met the man's eyes in the rearview mirror. "Could you please step on it?"

'We're sorry, but the flight has been temporarily delayed. Please remain seated. We plan to be airborne shortly.'

"GREAT! Just great!" groaned a man seated a few rows in front of Laylin; throwing his hands up in the air. "Nothing ever works the way it's supposed to!"

Laylin rolled her eyes as she cast her eyes outside again. The tarmac that had been busy around her was starting to still as the flight got ready to take off. The sky above the airport seemed to turn a light gray. Laylin wondered if the delay was because a storm was rolling in.

"I have a ticket," said Jungkook, slightly out of breath from running through the entire airport. Of course the flight Laylin was getting on had to be at the other end. "My brother...he called it in. He said you had a few tickets left..."

The woman behind the counter looked at the oddly dressed man with the half brown and half pink hair before her instead of at the computer screen. Jungkook fixed her with a 'well' look which caused her to sigh and consult it.

"What's your name, sir?"

"Jungkook," he said. "Jeon Jungkook. Please hurry...I have to be on this flight. It's important..."

The woman behind the counter was silent for a moment as she typed in his name to look it up.

"Do you have any ID so I can confirm your ticket?"

Jungkook nodded, digging out his wallet that he had snagged before he left the hospital. He put it on the counter so the woman could confirm his identity before printing off the ticket.

"They are loading in terminal 4C," said the woman, "And you better hurry because they are leaving soon."

Jungkook didn't have to be told twice, snatching the ticket from the woman's hand with a quick 'thank you' as he made a mad dash for the gate, hoping he'd make it on time.

Laylin listened to the safety instructions before digging out her music player. She tucked the earbuds into her ear as she settled back in her seat. Her eyes began to scan down through her playlist as she looked at all the choices she had to choose from. Her heart clenched when she passed by Taehyung's songs, remembering what had started all of this madness in the first place.

She felt a tear trail down her cheek that she quickly brushed away, settling eventually on some old radio tune she had put on there once upon a time because she had liked it.

Laylin noticed a movement in the aisle out of the corner of her eye as a person came over the intercom to announce the flight would be leaving. She figured the movement she saw was some last-minute boarder. They slid into the seat beside her. Laylin didn't look over at them as she turned her face to look out the window, trying to swallow the lump in her throat when she thought again about Jungkook.

'I miss you,' she thought as another tear slipped from her eye.

She was brought out of her miserable thoughts when the person that had sat beside her put their hand over her knee. Laylin was slightly irritated by its presence, hoping that it wasn't some sleazy person wanting to hit on her when she was vulnerable. Wiping away the tear on her cheek she turned away from the window to face the person who had placed their hand on her knee. As she looked at them, she gasped.

Yanking the earbuds free from her ears, she stared at Jungkook sitting beside her with a soft smile on his lips; his eyes filled with tears. Neither of them said anything as they looked at each other. A flight attendant came down the aisle then to check on passengers since the flight was about to take off, noticing that Jungkook wasn't wearing a belt.

"Sir, please buckle up. We're about to take off."

"Right, sorry," he said as he turned away from Laylin, taking his hand off her knee to do what he'd been asked to.

"What are you doing here?" asked Laylin finally, causing Jungkook to look back over at her. "Am I dreaming?"

He smiled at her again; this time a bit wider than before as he shook his head. She reached out a hand to take one of his. Jungkook grabbed a hold of it immediately, lacing their fingers together as he gave it a tight squeeze.

"It's you?" she asked as tears came to her eyes again. "You're back?"

Jungkook nodded, reaching out his free hand to brush her tears away. Even when the tears were gone, he still continued to brush his hand softly over her cheek.

"I told you I'd be right back," he said.

"Seven months isn't right back, jerk," said Laylin with a weak chuckle.

Jungkook weakly chuckled too as the hand on her face moved to softly cup her cheek as he bent his face closer to her.

"I guess that just means I have a lot to make up for then," he said in a whisper; his breath wafting over her lips.

Laylin's eyes fell shut as she leaned forward to meet Jungkook's lips in a kiss that was just as breathtaking - if not more so - than the first time. Because - unlike the first time - Jungkook was back in his own body and pouring his whole body and soul into it, shoving up the arm rest between them as he let go of her hand to pull her in close to him. Laylin wrapped her arms about him to grip the fuzzy red sweater he was wearing as she kissed him deeply and lovingly in return. They would have kept going if not for the flight attendant - who coming back by after making sure all the rest of the passengers were buckled - had caught the two of them in the middle of their make out session.

"You two need to sit back please. We're taking off."

Jungkook and Laylin pulled back from each other; both of their eyes glowing as they moved to do as they were told. They held tightly to each other's hands as the flight took off and away into the night.
