46. Sorry but...

Silence was better than anything else on earth in Yoongi's opinion. When one was granted silence, one could think things through logically; figure out the answers to problems that others had a hard time solving. Yoongi - while being known around the label as the one that got the job done - was also known for his love of silence. It was hard for Yoongi to find a place that was completely silent within the label though seeing that his office didn't possess soundproof walls. That was how Yoongi ended up finding the spot in the alley out back; a place sandwiched between a recyclable bin and a stack of boxes that no one could seem to be bother taking care of.

Even though he was a trapped as a cat, he still enjoyed the silence. Yoongi had told himself not to get his hopes up during Jin's attempt, but he couldn't help it. The disappointment that crashed down on him when it didn't work was sending panic throughout him; panic that he was not used to facing. Panic didn't usually happen because Yoongi was always prepared. However, Yoongi couldn't ever have prepared himself for being stuck as a feline.

'It'll be alright,' thought Yoongi as he kept his eyes closed. 'Things will be fixed eventually.'

As Yoongi kept his eyes closed to try to help himself feel better, there was a metallic squeal from beside him. Opening his eyes he turned to see a woman stalking out of the building as if she were angry at the world. She wore dangerously high heels, almost skewering one of Yoongi's paws with them. Yoongi quickly drew back when she walked past him, hiding behind one of the boxes as he watched her. She had a black purse with a golden chain dangling from her arm and was currently rummaging around inside it for something. With her face turned down towards her purse, Yoongi was able to recognize exactly who it was.

It was Taehyung's mother.

Yoongi continued to watch her as she withdrew a packet of cigarettes from her purse. She grumbled under her breath as she shook one out, tossing the packet carelessly back into her purse in search of a lighter. Yoongi was figuring that the confrontation upstairs had been an unpleasant surprise for her.

With the cigarette wedged between her glossy lips, she lit it. A plume of smoke swirled up into the air like dragon's breath as she closed her eyes and sighed.

Taking the cigarette out of her mouth after a drag or two, she held it between two fingers as she glared at the gray bricks across from her.

"It's alright. You knew this day might come eventually. Well, no...take that back. You never thought Taehyung would find him..." she whispered to herself. "I can't let this stand. This will ruin him. Taehyung will lose his fame. He will disappear and suffer..."

'More like you will suffer,' thought Yoongi as he watched her smoke.

"I have to stop this from happening," she said. "No one will listen to me so I'll have to take matters into my own hands."

Yoongi watched as she threw the cigarette down, snubbing it out with her foot before digging out her cell phone. She practically punched the number into the screen before putting it to her ear.

"Hello. I have a favor I need to ask of you..."

Yoongi watched as she turned to walk away to a more remote location in the alley so she could have the phone call without risking being overheard. Yoongi didn't like the sound of the conversation she was having and decided that he needed to follow after her to see what she had planned. Scurrying out from where he was seated, he followed after her as she rounded the corner.

The hallway of misery.

That's what Taehyung remembered it as. This hallway he was currently walking down only led to where his parents had an office, and every time he would be led down there he would always end up miserable. He followed after his father as he walked a little ways ahead of him on the gray carpet, soon leading him into an even grayer office. There was nothing colorful about the space. Everything was just as Taehyung remembered. He stood in the doorway as he watched his father pull out a seat at the small conference table in the room; a table that Taehyung remembered sitting at many times either bored out of his mind or feeling like he wasn't good enough.

"Please have a seat," his father said as he nodded at the chair he had pulled out.

Taehyung didn't say anything, nodding his head as he moved to take a seat. He watched his father shut the door before coming back over to sit across from him. Silence fell between them as his father sat there and stared at him. Taehyung found himself starting to get irritated in the silence. If his father had just brought him to this office to stare at him, he was over that.

"I thought you brought me here to talk to me," said Taehyung. "If you've changed your mind, I have places I need to - "

"I'm sorry."

Taehyung's words died on his lips as he looked over at his father. Sorry? He didn't think that word was even in his vocabulary. He looked over at him to see that his father let out a sigh after the words; as if that had been some sort of heavy weight on his chest.

"You're sorry?"

His father just nodded, looking back over at Taehyung.

"Why?" asked Taehyung. Even though he figured he knew why, he needed the verbal confirmation.

"I...I am sorry for not being there as your father," he said, "Because Jungkook, you are my son."

Taehyung felt as if all the oxygen had suddenly been sucked out of the room as those words hung in the air. It was true then. He and Jungkook were brothers. Taehyung tried to take a deep breath to force himself to breathe; blinking back tears as he glared at his father.

"You think sorry fixes you dumping me off at a fish restaurant like a piece of trash and moving on with your life?"

"Well, no, but..."

"Not once did you try to find me to see if I was okay. You didn't care. You just left me there, and now, when I'm about to be someone successful, now you're sorry?!"

Taehyung's father fell silent at the words. Taehyung couldn't help the rage that spewed forth from him. This angered him more than anything else that he had ever had to face. If they hadn't dumped Jungkook off somewhere, Taehyung wouldn't have grown up alone. Though - the more Taehyung thought about it - he supposed in a way being left was a blessing for Jungkook. He didn't have to put up with the crap that Taehyung had had to. Jungkook ended up with a mother that loved him and a best friend that was always by his side. He didn't have to face the lonely life that Taehyung did. When he saw that his father wasn't attempting to respond, Taehyung decided to say something more.

"It is obvious that I didn't mean anything to you, but in a way I suppose I should be thanking you. You gave me a chance to be raised in a household that loved me. I grew up loved and that is what made me the man I am today. Now my life is complete, not because of the fame I'm about to receive, but because I have my brother back. I don't need your apologies just like I don't need you."

Taehyung stood up from the table then, not wanting to be in the man's presence any more than he had to be. He walked towards the office door and had just put his hand on the doorknob when he heard his father's voice behind him say, "You were just insurance anyway..."

"What?"

Taehyung didn't want to humor his father anymore, but he wanted him to explain. He turned to look at him as he stared down at the table.

"Your mother and I had you as insurance incase Taehyung failed at being famous."

Taehyung gripped the door knob so tightly that his knuckles turned white.

"A human being is not an insurance policy," Taehyung ground out, "Are you telling me that you would have dumped Taehyung off if he had failed?"

"I'm honestly not sure what we would have done," said his father. "It never came up so we didn't think about it."

"Well, here's something you can plan for. Plan on never seeing him or me ever again."

"You don't speak for my son."

Taehyung's anger reached new heights at the fact that - not only did his father think he still controlled him - but that he was once again writing Jungkook off as his son.

"Bet," he growled out as he yanked the door open.

Taehyung refused to turn back as he marched down the hallway back to where the others were waiting for him. He entered the waiting room and saw that Jimin, Hobi, and Jungkook were all seated as they waited for him to return.

"So how did it..."

Jungkook's question died off before it was finished as Taehyung grabbed him by the arm and yanked him up from the chair. He wrapped him in a tight hug, releasing the tears he'd been holding back. Jungkook - though shocked - immediately wrapped his arms about him in return.

"I'm so sorry..." Taehyung whispered as Jungkook rubbed his back.

"Tae..." said Jungkook softly. "What happened? What did he say?"

Jungkook pulled back from Taehyung, keeping his hands on his shoulders as he looked at his reddened eyes. He reached up hands to brush the tears away.

"You are my brother," said Taehyung, "And my parents had you as an insurance policy incase I failed."

Jungkook set his lips together; anger creasing his brow at the words. He let his hands drop away from Taehyung as he moved to march out of the waiting room.

"Where are you going?" asked Jimin in slight panic as he watched Jungkook walking away with a purpose.

"I want to give someone a piece of my mind."

Jimin cursed under his breath as he looked from Taehyung to Jungkook's back as he marched away. Jimin quickly jogged to catch up to Jungkook as Hobi stayed where he was seated, looking at Taehyung.

"Do you think Jungkook is capable of murder?" asked Hobi, "Because he looked like he was going to kill him."

Even though Taehyung knew that Hobi was more than likely joking, he didn't doubt the level of anger that Jungkook was feeling. Taehyung quickly turned to leave the waiting room after them - not to save his father from Jungkook's wrath - but to be there for his brother.
