32. A Stone's Throw Away

While Taehyung and Laylin were downstairs with Jungkook's mother asking if it was okay to stay one more night, Jungkook moved to sneak back out the window he had climbed up through the last night. Once he was safely down on the ground, he climbed into the backseat of the vehicle in the driveway, laying down flat on the backseat. He laid there for a few minutes before Taehyung and Laylin came out. Laylin tucked a picnic basket on the floor of the car by Jungkook's feet before getting into the driver's seat; Taehyung sitting in the passenger seat. Jungkook continued to remain lying down until they had been driving for a few minutes. It was then that he sat up.

"You're still wearing a suit," said Laylin as she cast her gaze back in the rear view mirror at him as he sat up.

"I didn't bring a change of clothes with me," said Jungkook.

Taehyung moved to start untangling the brown sweater from about his head. Laylin felt her cheeks flush as she watched the sweater come off the top of his head. She didn't know why the action made her so hot and bothered, but she refused to look over at Taehyung as he held the sweater out towards Jungkook in the backseat.

"It's suppose to be chilly today so I put a shirt on under the sweater," said Taehyung. "This is the sweater that makes you feel most at home anyway, so you should be wearing it while we're at the lake at least."

Hearing Taehyung say he had another shirt on allowed her the comfort she needed to look back at Taehyung before looking in the backseat through the rear view mirror as Jungkook took the sweatshirt. Jungkook began to strip out of his suit jacket, lying it on the seat beside him before undoing the tie and then the dress shirt. By then Laylin was focusing back on the road since she was the one responsible for driving them to the lake and didn't want to get all hot and bothered for a second time.

By the time they arrived, the sun had started to break through the clouds a bit. Though it was chilly, it still looked like it'd be a perfect day. The three of them left the car in the parking lot and headed along a secluded path to their own private section of the rocky lake. The place they chose was hemmed in on all sides by trees. It was their own strip of rocky paradise. Taehyung placed the picnic basket down as Laylin spread out the blanket, the three of them sitting down on it after. Laylin sat in the middle with Jungkook on her right and Taehyung on her left. The three of them sat and enjoyed the beauty, but it wouldn't last for more than a few minutes. Taehyung couldn't keep what he learned a secret anymore.

"Jungkook," said Taehyung as he looked over at him, "I know you apologized last night to me, but I feel that now I have to apologize to you."

"About what?" asked Jungkook as he turned to look at Taehyung. He saw Laylin get kind of sheepish at Taehyung's words. Had something happened between them?

Taehyung could see that Jungkook flicked his gaze quickly at Laylin, deciding that he just needed to spit the truth out to ensure that wrong assumptions wouldn't be made.

"I talked with your mom last night."

"And?"

"Well...I asked her why she treated me - well you - so fragilely because she was acting like I was dying when I cut my finger last night, and she told me something you don't know."

"Which is what?" asked Jungkook.

Taehyung took a deep breath before saying, "She told me that she adopted you a little while after her husband's death."

Silence hung in the air, interrupted by the wildlife surrounding them. Jungkook opened his mouth before closing it. Laylin looked over at Jungkook as he seemed to flounder for a response.

"How was I adopted?" asked Jungkook finally. "Did she find me at an orphanage or something?"

Taehyung reached up a hand to scratch at the back of his neck before shaking his head.

"You were left behind at a fish restaurant she worked at. The fish restaurant the psychic's family owns actually."

"Some psychic...couldn't even tell us that when we were there..." huffed Jungkook, sounding completely deflated.

Laylin moved to slip an arm about him, but Jungkook - instead of leaning into the touch - sprung to his feet.

"I need a minute," he said before walking into the trees behind them and disappearing.

Taehyung and Laylin were left alone on the beach on the blanket. Both of them had their heads turned to stare at the spot where Jungkook had just disappeared.

"I'll go after him," said Taehyung as he stood up. He looked down at Laylin sitting on the blanket. "I'll be back in a minute."

Laylin nodded as Taehyung turned to walk into the forest of trees. He was only entering a minute or so after Jungkook, so he figured Jungkook couldn't have gotten too far. Still it took him a second to track down where Jungkook had disappeared off to. After carving his path through the trees for a few minutes, he noticed something off to his left. Taehyung turned his head that way to see that Jungkook was sitting on a stump overlooking the water. He walked over to him. Taehyung wasn't quiet about his approach, but Jungkook never once turned around to look at him. When Taehyung reached Jungkook, he laid a hand gently on his shoulder.

"Jungkook..."

"A fish restaurant. I wasn't even taken to an orphanage or some sort of safe place. I was thrown away. Left behind. Forgotten. I..."

"Jungkook," repeated Taehyung, moving carefully over the branches to stand in front of him.

When he did, he saw the tears tracing their way down Jungkook's face. He reached out a hand to wipe at them.

"You weren't forgotten," said Taehyung. "You have a mother that loves you. She said you coming into her life saved it. To her, you're her golden miracle."

"I don't feel very golden," Jungkook mumbled as Taehyung stopped brushing at Jungkook's face. "I feel tarnished."

"That's not an abnormal feeling. We all have things about our pasts or things about our life in general that make us feel that way. Do you think I'm tarnished because of my witchy parents?"

Jungkook shook his head before saying, "But that's different."

"No it's not," said Taehyung.

"At least your parents kept you," said Jungkook. "They suck, but they kept you."

"Kookie, I'd want to be in your shoes in a heartbeat if I could; to live your life instead."

"Well congrats because you have my body," snapped Jungkook turning away from Taehyung to wipe at his face which was wet with fresh tears.

Taehyung sighed, looking ahead of them where a sliver of the rocky shore was. He moved carefully over to it and began picking up several large stones in his hands. Jungkook tracked his gaze to where Taehyung was, quirking a brow.

"What are you doing?"

Taehyung didn't answer right off, grabbing one more stone before turning to look at Jungkook with a small pile now in his hands. He shifted it to hold out a stone towards Jungkook. Jungkook just stared at it instead of taking it.

"Why are you handing me a stone?"

"We're going to cast our cares out into the middle of the lake. We're going to throw away everything weighing us down."

"Seriously?"

"Seriously," said Taehyung. "Now take the stone."

Jungkook hesitated for a few more seconds before getting up from the stump he was sitting on, taking the stone from Taehyung's hand. Taehyung put the small pile of specially selected stones at their feet as he held one in his hand.

"Lets scream out our problems as we throw the stone. Let our problems drown with it," said Taehyung. "I can go first."

Jungkook turned his head to the side to watch Taehyung as he pulled his arm back, launching the stone into the water as he shouted out, "PARENTS THAT LOOK AT YOU LIKE A PAYCHECK!"

Jungkook couldn't help the smirk that appeared on his face as the stone plunked into the water; a few ripples in the water the only evidence of Taehyung's actions.

"Your turn," said Taehyung as he looked over at Jungkook, smirking too when he saw his smirk.

"You're ridiculous," said Jungkook before turning to face the water, chucking the stone as he shouted, "BIOLOGICAL PARENTS THAT GIVE YOU AWAY!"

The stone Jungkook threw went a bit further than the one Taehyung had thrown. Even though Jungkook thought Taehyung's idea was stupid, he found himself feeling better. The two of them kept taking turns throwing more stones and shouting out cares big and small until the pile of stones that Taehyung had gathered was nonexistent.

When they were done screaming their worries and throwing stone after stone into the water, Jungkook had to admit that he no longer felt like all the negative things he'd been dwelling on were drowning him. Now he felt like he was light enough to float away from the pain.
