Common Ground: Chptr: 5 Runaway
You slowly woke up, hearing your phone buzzing on the bedside table annoyingly. You were staring up at the ceiling, feeling exhausted. You didn't even bother turning your head. You just lazily reached over to your phone and pressed the power button. Instantly snoozing it.
You weren't sure how many hours you slept but it sure as hell wasn't long enough.
There were sounds of groaning beside you. You turned your head and saw Bob stirring in his sleep. You noticed that his arm was laid on top of your stomach.
You were surprised that he was still here. You assumed he would have left sometime last night. That was the type of relationship you had with the last person you were with. So, it was nice that Bob stayed. It was a nice change of pace.
You placed your fingertips on your lips, thinking back to what happened. You came to the realization Bob was your first actual kiss. Sure, you had a brief sexual partner before but they never kissed you or called you petnames. Or hugged you. They just had sex with you, hung out with you, used your money, and time, and then... left you.
Tears formed in your eyes, which just made you frustrated. You just wanted to forget about them. Continue on like they never existed. They're probably having the time of their life with their new partner while you sulked over them.
The alarm went off again as it buzzed against the wooden bedside table, making you jump.
"Turn that shit off ..." Bob muttered.
'Oh, shit!'
You grabbed your phone and swiped the screen, turning off the alarm. Squinting at your phone, you looked at the time and it was 5:33 AM.
You groaned out. You had to go to work soon. You were a manager at a restaurant that also doubled as a sports pub. It paid well, just enough to get you by.
But instead of waking up, you decided to play a dangerous game and closed your lids, falling back asleep. Opening up your eyes again, you lifted up your phone and saw that it was 6:10 AM. You shot open your eyes and threw back the blanket, jumping out of bed.
"Shit," you whispered under your breath. You ran into the bathroom and started to wet your toothbrush before putting on the toothpaste.
"What's wrong?" You heard Bob groan from the bedroom.
You walked back to the bedroom with your toothbrush shoved in your mouth as you looked through your closet, finding your professional clothes.
"I'm late for work," you said through your foamed mouth.
He tiredly glanced over at your digital clock, sitting on top of your dresser. "At this time? You only slept fer two hours."
Dragging your pants up, you turned around, looking at Bob while you pulled your toothbrush out of your mouth. "What?"
"We were done at around 3:40."
"Oh...damn..."
'Oh, God!'
You were sure you both came back home at around midnight. Or maybe you guys came in later than you thought? You weren't sure. Or maybe...
You blushed at the thought and ran back to the bathroom, holding onto the long sleeve blouse you had in your arms. You finished brushing your teeth and quickly did your morning routine. You threw your nightshirt on top of the toilet seat and were about to put your blouse on but you realized you didn't have a bra on.
Groaning, you swiftly went back into your bedroom. You didn't care that Bob was staring at your boobs. You just got your bra from your dresser and put it on, then, your blouse.
You slipped on some socks and grabbed your keys along with your purse. You looked around your area and started to get irritated. "Ugh, where's my phone?!"
You looked around like a madman while Bob just watched you. He was going to say something, but you already found it.
"God damn it, it was in my hands!" You looked at Bob as you made your way out to the living room. "Uh, so I guess you could stay here. You're welcome to anything. Um, so yeah. I'll be back later in the afternoon." You almost left the bedroom but you pulled yourself back in when you saw your dog coming up to you. "Oh! And can you take the dog out? Please?" You asked as you pressed your palms together. "You can just take her out back. Okay? Thanks! Bye!"
You ran to the front door and almost tripped on the dirty coat you left on the floor. You just kicked it to the side with your feet.
In the meantime, your dog was right behind you. She was looking up at you as if she was curious.
After smashing your feet inside your work shoes, you grabbed a coat from the coat hanger by the door. You turned towards your dog and patted her head. "I'll see ya soon, girl!"
You darted out the door. You checked your phone and it was 6:20. You needed to be at work by 6:30. Which would be impossible to make on time, considering it takes twenty minutes to get there.
You shuddered as the wind blew. The coldness, biting your hands and face painfully. Glancing up from your phone, as you walked down the steps, you let out a groan. Your car was covered in snow.
Unlocking your car, you opened up the trunk and grabbed your snow brush. You swept the brush around your car. Getting snow all over yourself. Because of your height, you had to press your body up against the car to get to certain spots. Especially the windshield. Luckily, your windshield wasn't frozen over.
Meanwhile, without your knowledge, Bob was watching you in amusement through the bedroom window. He watched you comedically brush the snow off your car wildly and watched you curse out loud in frustration as you brushed the snow off your coat and legs.
Once you were done, you realized you closed the trunk of your car and you didn't feel like unlocking it. Your hands felt like they were in buckets of pins and needles and they felt numb at the same time. You were shivering and just wanted to get in the car.
Opening up the driver seat, you sat inside and closed the door. You then threw the snow brush in the back and tossed your purse on the passenger side. You checked your phone once again and it was 6:30.
You cursed under your breath and started your car and drove off to work.
On your way, you called your other manager, to let them know that you were going to be late. They were very nice about it, which you were grateful for. It was a Friday, one if the busiest days of the week, right behind Saturday. So the fact that they were nice about it made you feel at ease.
You finally made it to your job. You gave some vague explanation about why you came in late to your other manager.
As your conversation almost wrapped up, your other manager pointed out your knuckles, to which you also just responded with a vague reply.
But it did make you wonder...what happened to the guy? You hoped he was still in immense pain... And that he doesn't report you for assault, which just made you feel anxious. You blinked away your annoying thoughts and started working.
Working was difficult. Physically and mentally. Your body felt sore from what Bob did to you last night. You were on your feet through the whole shift. So that didn't help. Mental-wise, all you could think about was Bob. You wondered what he was up to.
You wished you could somehow be able to contact him. You began to wonder if he had a phone. But you then came to the conclusion that he probably couldn't get a phone, considering he's a criminal.
'Maybe that could be a future gift idea.'
You shook your head, shaking the thought out. You scolded yourself for thinking about such a stupid idea. You weren't even sure what his intentions were. He could just kill you anytime he wanted if he got bored of you.
'He isn't my friend. He probably doesn't want that and he probably wouldn't even care to have one.'
You were pulled out of your thoughts when your hostess came up to you worriedly about some angry customers. You gave her a smile and nodded, ready to help her out.
After a long day, you finally clocked out. Letting out a hefty sigh of relief. You were forced to stay an extra two hours because the manager for the next shift got sick and they needed you to cover for them until the other manager came in.
Of course, you didn't want to. You wanted to go home. But, money was money. At least you were getting paid.
You made your way to the employee locker room. While you were getting your stuff out, you were listening to your co-workers talking about Friendsgiving.
Even though you never really talked about it, you wanted to be invited to one. However, you never really made close enough connections with the other employees to get invited. It was probably the way you presented yourself. You had a difficult time conversing casually, it made you unapproachable.
As you were leaving, you thought about what you needed to do today. You decided to go shopping for your dog since you didn't have anything for her.
Instead of driving back to your hometown. You decided to drive to a local pet shop in the town you worked in.
It was a store that you always drove past. It was called 'Pet Stuff Plus'. You saw in the window an advertisement about a Black Friday sale. So of course, you were going to take advantage of that.
As you entered the pet shop, your nose was hit with the smell of dog and cat food. As well as dried dog treat cookies that were displayed, presenting themselves like something you see at a bakery. There was a hint of dog shampoo that was lingering as you saw a dog owner washing her large dog in one of the wash stations.
You noticed the store didn't sell any pets, just supplies. Although, there were a few kittens that were sent from the shelter and were up for adoption. You went over to the kittens and gushed over them.
"Hello! Do you need help with anything?"
You looked up and saw a guy. He seemed like he was close to your age. He was wearing a blue collared shirt with the name of the store and a logo of a dog on the left breast of the shirt. There was a name tag on the right side labeled 'Todd'.
You told him about a new dog you got and needed some help on what to get for her. He happily helped you and gave you some options.
You never realized that dog food can get so expensive! You wanted to get something good for your pup though. You saw a brand that you liked and decided to get it. You also spotted some sandwich cookies that looked like they were for human consumption, but were for dogs. You decided to get that too and some dog toys, shampoo, bowls, and a dog harness along with a leash.
You went up to the checkout and started to converse with Todd.
You guys talked about your love for dogs and also found out that Todd lived in the same town you did! He also told you about a dog he has too. You both hit off really well and exchanged phone numbers to have a future play date together with your pets.
Eventually, the total came up and you thought you were going to have a heart attack. It was a hefty price, even with the sale. But you didn't really have a choice.
As you were about to leave the store, you saw a pregnant woman walking in with her dog on a leash.
That's when you remembered the most important thing.
God, you didn't know what Bob was thinking. Sure, it was hot as fuck and you wanted him to do it again and again, for some fucked up reason. But did he think you won't magically get pregnant? Did he want you to?
Groaning in annoyance and went back to your car with your stuff.
You went to the closest store and found the Plan B. And shit, it's expensive. You wished you were back in college. At least they sold Plan B for half the price. You thought about buying another one, but you didn't.
You were wanting to go grocery shopping too, but with your credit card payment due soon and the fact, your paycheck won't come after the payment, you were stuck with what you had at home.
You headed back to your hometown and it was getting dark already. You just realized it was already late afternoon and you felt so bad for your dog. You just hoped that maybe Bob was taking care of her while you were gone.
Finally arriving home, you grabbed all your stuff and walked up to your house, and noticed the lights were turned off.
Once you entered, you were almost tackled down by your dog. You had to tell her to calm down as you laughed.
You flicked on the lights and your house was empty. You couldn't help but feel a little disappointed. Which made you feel uncomfortable. Why were you disappointed?
You set up everything for your dog. Gave her water and fed her. Although, it seemed like Bob already gave her some water and food. There was a bowl on the ground as well as an empty dish plate.
You noticed a piece of paper on the dining table and looked at it. It was in poorly written handwriting, it was almost illegible. However, you were able to make out what it said.
It seemed like Bob fed her some plain rice and chicken. Took her outside and finished up the laundry for you.
You went over to the laundry room and checked the washer and it was empty. You then looked in the drier and saw your dried clothes.
A smile appeared on your face. Today has been okay, not the best, but seeing the nice gesture made your day better.
You began to hear whining and walked out to see your dog, up against the back door. She then went back down on all fours and started to paw at the door.
Letting out a chuckle, you walked over to the door and let her out in your backyard. It wasn't huge, but it was enough for her to run around in.
You couldn't see her very well though, your outdoor light wasn't working. You needed to replace the bulb, but you never got to it. You tried to look for your phone in your pocket to use it's flashlight but it wasn't there. You glanced up and saw it sitting on the dining table.
You grabbed your phone and went back to your backyard. Turning on the flashlight, you scanned your yard. But it was oddly silent.
"Hey! Uh...sweetie?" you realized you still didn't have a name for her.
Looking around, you noticed that your dog disappeared. Panic began to set in. You ran around in your backyard and you spotted it, making your heart drop down to your ass.
A hole underneath your fence.
You let out a curse and ran back into your house. You grabbed your keys and wallet and darted out the door.
You hopped in your car and started to drive around your neighborhood. Thinking that maybe she didn't run too far but you didn't see her.
Being the overthinker you are, you assumed the worst possible outcome for her. And the worst possible outcome for you.
What if Bob found out something terrible happened to her? It'll be your fault. He loves that dog.
You needed to find her quickly. To ease your mind and to keep you and your dog out of trouble.
