Common Ground: Chpt: 1 Meeting

You were taking a walk at night. You enjoyed taking late-night walks. Even though everyone always tells you it's dangerous. But how likely were you going to meet a bad guy anyway? Besides, you did this all the time and you were well protected.

You shoved your hands into the pockets of your warm coat. It was somewhat thick and made you look like you had rolls but it kept you nice and cozy.

As you were walking, you saw a man walking down the sidewalk with his dog. A cute, floppy-eared, female pit bull. You couldn't help but smile when you saw the cutie. As you got closer, your smile slowly turned sour. It was clear the dog was abused.

"Come here, you piece of shit!" The man continued to yell at the dog, "How fucking dare you run off!"

Your heart started to race as your blood ran cold and then hot. You slowed down as you passed the man and his dog as you stared at them.

The man glared at you as he tugged on the slip leash. "Mind your own damn fucking business, bitch."

He reeked of alcohol and bad breath. Your nose stung from the nasty smell.

You glanced down and noticed the dog sniffing you. Almost as if she was asking you to help her. Before you could do anything, the owner noticed and tugged the dog hard, dragging her away from you.

Turning your head, you barely moved forward. You wanted to save the dog. You gripped onto the sparkling mace you had in your pocket.

Your thoughts were ripped out of you when you heard the agonizing sound of a dog yelping and screaming. Snapping your head around, you noticed that the man's leg was lifted.

He kicked his dog, and she was cowering on the ground with her ears back. "Come on! FUCKING WALK!"

You were shaking at this point as you watched the man dragging the poor animal hard.

This was the last straw.

You made large strides toward the man, his back turned away from you. You got on your toes and tapped on his shoulder.

He began turning his head, while you had your mace ready and sprayed all the contents you had left onto his face. He screeched in agony as he covered his eyes and flinched over. He glanced up at you with angry squinted eyes.

In the meantime, you had your dominant arm in the air and pulled back with a fist. "You fucking scum!" you screamed. And with a swift movement, you punched the motherfucker hard.

You winced at the impact you made. The man howled in pain as he held his face, finally dropping the leash.

Quickly crouching down, you picked up the leash and started to talk to the dog as you gently let her sniff you. "Come on, baby! Come on, honey! Let's go!"

"Give me that back!" the drunken man screamed.

"Fuck off! You're a fucking monster!" you shouted back, you were gripping hard on the leash.

The man started to walk towards you. You quickly stood up and walked backward. "I'm not a fucking monster. A real monster is someone like that Bob guy. That fat fuck who runs around and eats people."

'Bob Velseb?'

You let out a scoff. Almost like a laugh. "Yeah, but I bet he doesn't beat his fucking animals, you psycho! You're more of a monster than he is. And y'know? I hope he gets your fuckin' ass. Puts you in his damn pie or something!"

The man let out a growl and started to run after you. You began to take a few hops back, quickly glancing down at the dog, you spoke to her, gently pulling on the leash. "You want to run, right? Come on!"  The dog seemed to understand and started to run beside you.

The man started to shout behind you but you ignored him and only focused on the dog. "Come on, hon! That's it! Go! Go! Go!"

You dropped the leash, letting the dog run at her full speed. You continued to run as you stomped on the pavement, running hard and fast as you can with the dog slightly in front of you. The dog was panting hard and her ears were perked up.

You began to notice that it started to snow as it landed on your nose and eyes.

'What? Snowing already? It's not even December yet…'

You also noticed you were coming up to a park. You had to slow down a bit. The dog didn't seem to notice though and kept on running further.

"Hey …! W-wait …" you huffed. You hunched over, hands on your knees as you tried to catch your breath. Your lungs were burning, making you cough. Your face felt numb from the cold, you couldn't feel the snow landing on your face anymore.

You stood back straight up, took in a deep breath, and let out a heavy audible sigh as condensation came out. You glanced down at your dominant hand and started to feel it aching.

You began looking around, wondering what you should do.

'Should I look for the dog? It's snowing. She'll probably get cold.'

In the corner of your eye, you saw a shadow. You turned around and you thought you lost all the heat from your blood.

The street lamp illuminated behind the figure, making it hard to see their face. But that silhouette. The horns and the size of this person. A large, heavy set man.

The Devil aka Bob Velseb.

"Hello, doll~."

That deep southern drawl.

The voice and the petname made your heart skip a beat. You then noticed what he was holding, a bloody knife. This made your heart skip another beat. But for a different reason.

He seemed to open his mouth to talk again but before you gave him a chance, you just darted off running.

You huffed and puffed, running through the wide open space of the park. This was the worst place to be in. There was literally no place to hide.

Unfortunately, you didn't realize that there was a dip in the ground. You ended up putting all your weight in that dip and fell onto the muddy grass hard on your stomach. Breathing heavily, you took the chance and turned on your back.

He was already there, making his way toward you. You sat up on your butt and started to push yourself back on the muddy ground as the snow picked up. You fumbled into your pocket and pulled out the mace, still open. Without a second thought, you pressed on it, but nothing came out.

Bob just laughed at you heartily. You were sure he was going to wake up the whole town. In frustration, you growled and tossed it to the side. Glancing up, you saw dark blood stains on his already red turtleneck sweater. He had that wide smile on his face. Along with that wide-eyed stare that felt like he was looking deep into your soul. "Where's the dog?"

You blinked several times. "W-wha…huh?"

"That dog. Where is it?"

"I-I…I dunno. She…"

You heard panting and light thuds coming your way. You turned your attention toward the sound as well as your perpetrator.

You didn't have time to figure out what it was, you just got tackled onto the ground as you let out a yelp. Soon after, you felt something wet, warm, and slobbery.

You couldn't stop giggling and laughing when you realized who it was. "Hey! You're back." You pulled the slip leash off her neck and tossed it to the side.

Looking over to your right, you saw him just standing there with his bloodied knife. He came closer to you, and your heart raced, ready to just get stabbed. You looked away with closed eyes as he crouched down.

But your eyes went wide when you heard deep chuckling. You looked up and saw the pittie practically on top of the guy, licking his masked face profusely as her tail wagged a million miles per hour.

"Yer such a sweetheart. Aren't-cha?"

You couldn't help but have some sort of feelings toward this guy. The way he was happily chuckling as he gently pets the dog. You just shoved those thoughts away. He was a serial killer! He killed people and ate them! But this moment in front of you made you feel things. You thought for a second and felt like it might be a good time to maybe soften the killer up, and hopefully, he'll let you go.

You carefully scoot in close and begin petting the dog. "She's really sweet. Isn't she?"

He just replied with a hum. "What're you planning on doing with her?" he asked, flicking his eyes up to you. He still had a wide smile on his face, but it didn't seem as scary this time around.

You glanced away, and you felt a little blush creeping up but you hoped the cold covered that up for you. "Oh, I-I'm going to take her home with me…Did you know? That the euthanasia rate for pit bulls is ninety-three percent? And only one in six hundred pits find a forever home? With those statistics, I can't leave her at the shelter…Plus, we don't have no kill shelters around here, so…"

This was so weird to you. Why the hell were you making small talk with a cannibal about dogs, specifically pit bulls? Well, you knew why, still, what the fuck.

But of course, you didn't stop.

"So, uh, do you like dogs?" you asked him.

He seemed to smile wide and you noticed in the corner of his lip, for some reason — drool…drool slipping down. "I love dogs. Maybe even more than candy and maybe even more than…" he paused and began to pant, puffs of condensation floating out of his mouth as he stared at you. "...human flesh."

You got really uncomfortable and pulled the dog closer to you. "O-oh…okay. Uh, me too. Well, ex-except the last part…"

He let out a loud laugh, a cackle. Bob reached forward and grabbed the cheeks of your face with one of his large cold hands, pulling you in closer to his face. "I was actually planning on killing you but…" His wide eyes were now half-lidded. "I think I like you better alive…little lamb~."

Your stomach clenched, hearing the petname and how low his voice has gotten. Swallowing dryly, you felt yourself going really hot. You were sure he was going to feel it if he kept holding your face like this.

"Did-chu know? When a human blushes, they feel it in the lining of the stomach too as it also turns red?" He began chuckling at you, almost mockingly.

'Shit! He noticed.'

"Uh, ha…tha-that's a cool fact." You realized the snow was picking up even more and you kind of wanted to head home. "So, is it…okay if I can go home now?"

The question caused him to chortle and then seeped into a laugh. His eyes widened again and his smile went back to being creepy as ever. He gently let go of your face and stood up.

You got up from the ground and took a look down at yourself as the dog placed her paws on your chest, standing up on her hind legs. You were all muddy to your disliking but you ignored it and started to pet the dog. You even gave her a little kiss on her big head. You glanced up at Bob and he was still staring down at you.

Starting to feel a little flustered under his gaze, you began to fidget with your cold fingers. "U-uhm, thanks…I guess I'll be going home now?" you squeaked out. Afraid you might offend him somehow.

You softly grabbed the dog's paws on your chest and placed her down on the ground. You walked around Bob nervously, occasionally stealing some glimpses from him. As you continued to walk a little bit more, you noticed the dog stopped following you. Turning around, you saw that your new pet was standing on her hind legs, leaning up against Bob.

"C'mere girl! Let's go home!" you called out to her.

The dog took a glance at you but then turned her attention back to Bob.

'Oh no…'

Bob looked up at you, he somehow looked so smug underneath that mask of his.

Your new dog was now attached to Bob.

'Fuck.'
