The Arrival/New People

What is it like from going to a simple public school to a snobby academy? Well it sucks. I had been attending Lincoln Middle School since I was in sixth grade, and when I graduated from there I moved on to the Lincoln High School. Keyword 'had' attended. I was in my sophomore year in high school when me and my friend Bryce had been called to the principal's office. We went in and our principal had said that every year for the sophomores they do a drawing for one girl and one boy to have the rest of their high school year at Freemont Academy. Which in other words is the snobbiest school in the state of California. So my principal had said that Bryce and I had won.

"Do we have to accept the offer?" I ask.

"No, but it is advised," said my principal.

So here is Bryce and I in the plane heading over to California. We had talked about it together and if one of us went the other would go. Bryce and I have been friends for a while, but we weren't like those really close friends. We had packed up all of our stuff so we could live in the houses they had at the academy. Yeah, you get to live there for high school. I'm sort of excited, but another part of me is terrified to go.

"I don't want to go to this stupid academy," I say looking out the window. The flight attendant said that we would land in five minutes.

"Don't be so negative," says Bryce. "This might be fun."

"Do you realize that that whole academy is filled with snobby rich people and we are going to be surrounded by them?" I say.

"Not all of them are so bad," he says. I shrug my shoulders and I feel the plane land. We grab our stuff and get a cab. Bryce gives the driver the address of the school and we get there in five minutes. When we get out there are a group of guys in uniforms walking by. When I reach over to grab my bag from the trunk I hear one of the guys whistle. I roll my eyes and ignore them.

"The guy on the phone said to meet him at the main building," says Bryce as we walk past the group of guys and trudge our stuff behind us.

"Does he realize how many buildings there are?" I ask. "He expects us to just know where it is?"

"It's the one with a blue eagle on the sides," he says nodding his head in front of us. We both walk in and there is a woman at the front desk.

"Welcome to Freemont Academy," she says in a chipper voice. "What do you need?"

"Um we are new students here," says Bryce.

She smiles at him. "What are your names?"

"Bryce Hayes and Haley Morgan," he says. She starts typing things on her keyboard and looks back up.

"Mr. Hayes you are in dorm 201, and Haley you are in dorm 183," she says handing us two different keys. We start walking down the hallways and we both stop at my dorm.

"This sucks," I say staring at the black door in front of me.

"Hey, it might not be that bad," says Bryce. "I'll come over here when I'm done unpacking."

"Okay," I say nodding my head and sticking my key in the door. I open it and see a girl looking out a window on her phone.

"I can't believe that Damian did that," she says. I roll my eyes. Great, my roommate is probably the queen bee who loves to gossip. She didn't hear me come in so I cough. She turns around and looks at me.

"I have to go," she says into the phone and hangs up. "Who are you?"

"I'm Haley, also known as your new roommate," I say.

"I didn't ask for a roommate," she says in a whining tone.

I laugh and throw my stuff on the extra bed. "Well I didn't ask for an annoying roommate." Her eyebrows crease down and she rolls her eyes. We don't say anything to each other as I unpack my stuff. The guy of this place sent my uniforms last week and I already miss my normal clothes. I hear a knock on the door and open it while my roommate is on her phone.

"Hey," says Bryce grinning.

"Hi," I say letting him in. "It didn't take you that long to unpack." My roommate looks up from her phone and looks up and down Bryce.

"Hey, I'm Melissa," she says smiling. I chuckle and she looks over at me with a look. "Who's your friend, Abby?"

"It's Haley, and you're trying too hard," I say. She looks at me with disgust.

"I'm Bryce," he says. Melissa looks back and Bryce and throws a smile. It's sad how these snobby girls throw themselves on guys.

"Let's go," I say tugging on Bryce's arm.

"Okay," Bryce says. I open the door and we both walk out. Right before the door closes I hear Melissa say, "Nice meeting you!"

"I hate her," I say as we walk down the hallways trying to find the exit.

"You haven't even met her yet," Bryce says.

"Why do you have to be positive about everything?" I ask.

"Sorry for being a happy person," he says.

"So what about you?" I ask. "Who's your roommate?"

"Well it's three guys," Bryce says. "Tyler, Damian, and Connor."

Damian. I remembered Melissa saying his name to the person on the other side of her phone conversation.

"They're meeting us for lunch, which is where we are going right now," Bryce says as we walk out of a door and step into broad daylight.

"Great," I say rolling my eyes.

"I know you'll like them," says Bryce. "They're great people." We walk into a restaurant called The Hub. Bryce looks around and points at a table in the corner. "That's them."

Bryce walks first and I kind of walk behind him, like he can hide me.

"Bryce!" says a guy standing up and they do the guy hug thing. The guy who greeted Bryce looks back at me and raises his eyebrows. "Who's the blonde?"

"Oh this Haley, and this is Connor, Tyler, and Damian," says Bryce.

Connor, who has short brown hair, is tall, lean, blue eyes, and a black beanie on, is the one who asked about me. Damian looks almost identical to Connor, but has black hair and his eyes are bluer, and was a part of that group that whistled at me earlier. And then Tyler has short blonde hair, piercing green eyes, and is shorter than Damian and Connor.

Bryce sits down on the booth, and scoots over closest to the wall.

"C'mon," he says patting the seat for me to sit next to him. I scoot next to him, and Connor who is still standing looks at me.

"Can I sit here?" he asks pointing to the little space that's left next to me.

I wanted to say something like, "How about you sit next to your buddies, there's more room over there." Or "Yeah sure if you can fit your butt there." But instead I said, "Yeah." Connor smirks and sits down so close to me that I could smell the expensive cologne on him.

The guys started some kind of conversation about football, I think. I wasn't really worried about their conversation, I was just focused on moving slowly more towards Bryce and farther away from Connor. The waitress came over and took our orders.

"Buffalo chicken sand which," said Connor.

"Triple meat pizza," said Damian.

"Bacon cheeseburger," said Tyler.

"Bleu cheese burger," said Bryce.

"I'll have bacon cheese fries," I say. The waitress said that it would be out soon.

"You're not ordering an entrée?" asks Bryce.

"I'm not that hungry," I say.

"Well you're too skinny," says Connor. After he said that he put his hands around my waist. No one could see it since it was under the table. I grab his hands and take them off my waist. I look at Connor for one minute and he has the big goofy smile on his face. I roll my eyes try to pay attention to their conversation.

"You're being quiet," says Bryce.

"I'm just not one to talk about football," I say sitting up straighter.

"Well then what do you want to talk about?" Damian asks me.

"How about Melissa?" I ask leaning in just a little closer to him. The food comes out and I take one of my fries and pop it in my mouth. "I heard her talking about you."

"Well I wouldn't believe anything she says," Damian replies taking a piece of his pizza off the tray and taking a bite. "She lies to get what she wants."

"How do you know her?" Tyler asks me.

"She is my roommate," I say.

"Oh, that sucks," Connors says next to me. "I bet we would be a whole better as roommates instead of her."

"You just want to have a hot girl in your bed," Damian says stuffing the rest of his pizza in his mouth. My face gets red and I look down at my fries.

"Are you sure you aren't talking about yourself?" Connor asks him.

"I think football is a better topic," I say focusing on my fries.

"Okay then," Bryce says going on to talk about the playoffs. Once we finish eating I go outside first and sit on the bench and wait for Bryce. I hear the door open and get up expecting it to be Bryce, but instead it is Tyler.

"Oh," I say sitting back down.

"Well I guess you are glad to see me," he says sitting down next to me on the bench. "Sorry, about Damian and Connor in there."

"Yeah," I say.

"They can be a little...I don't know the word I'm looking for," he says thinking.

"I know what you mean," I say. "I guess I should have been prepared for people like them."

"I think you are acting just fine," he says. "Can I walk you back to your dorm?"

"Um, I guess so," I say getting up. We both start walking back, him with his hands in his pocket and me with my hands on the side of me.

"I can't believe that Melissa is your roommate," he says astonished.

"Well I'm not exactly joyed for her to be my roommate," I say.

"If you ever need to get away from her you know where to find us," Tyler says smirking.

"Yeah that will probably end up happening a lot," I say. "Why is she so..."

"Melissa?" he asks finishing me sentence.

"Yeah," I say giggling.

"Her daddy is the richest guy in California and her older sister is worse than her," Tyler replies.

"Dear God," I mumble.

Tyler laughs, and we reach my dorm and says, "How about you come up to our dorm right before you head off to the cafeteria, I can show you around if you like?"

"Um okay that would be great," I say opening the door.

"Goodnight Hayley," Tyler says when I enter the room.

"Goodnight," I say before I close the door.

"Who was that?" I hear Melissa ask after I close the door.

"Tyler," I say. "I went for lunch with him, Damian, Connor, and my friend Bryce."

"I would stay away from Damian," she says.

"Oh trust me, I'm not going to get close to him anytime soon," I say.

I go into the bathroom and take a shower and let everything soak in. Attending this new school with my best friend, having a snobby roommate, and having two perverted guys. Great right?
