Ch 22/ epilogue
“Hi, everyone! I can’t believe it’s been five years since, you know, Scarlet Moth.” I smiled as we all sat around in the basement, it was awkward talking about her so I did my best to smoothly change the topic to something lighter. “Congratulations on the engagement Chloe.” I turned to her and her fiance. After Amelia came to Paris as an apprentice under Chloe’s mom, they grew closer. Chloe’s mom never paid her any head but Amelia did. She helped Chloe feel less alone and worked hard to help build her a connection with her mother. She's done so much good to Chloe after all these years and finally, Chloe had popped the questions just days before.
“Thanks.” Chloe grinned. Alya and Nino were the first to get married and shortly after me and Adrien announced our own engagement, We found out they were expecting. Now they have a three year old causing chaos around their house. Alya had said that if they could face Scarlet Moth they could raise their crazy child.
“Hey, so, are you really death?” Amelia asked directed at me, We told Chloe she could tell Amelia before they got engaged and Amelia was, while surprised, okay with it too.
“Yeah, she is, it’s really annoying to walk into our closet each morning only to be face to face with black robes and a scythe leaning against the wall.” Adrien answered.
“Wait, really?” Her eyes were wide interested.
“I don’t have a scythe, or black robes.” I elbowed Adrien who was holding back laughter.
“Aww.” she looked a little down. “Well, what’s it like in the underworld?”
“I’ve never been, I just walked them there and they go the rest of the way themselves. For me, it’s pitch black and I’m following a light, when I ask them, they say that they're quite literally taking a walk down memory lane.”
“Weird.” she processed that. “Wait, but don’t you also run the library above?”
“Yeah, but when I need to do things like that, I’ll get a weird sense and I co-run it with Iridessa, she takes over when I need to go. I’m not the first death she’s helped.”
“Really?” I nodded. “Hm, oh! I have another question!”
“Okay?”
“If we go to the underworld when we die, where do you go?” I froze at this question and the room fell silent. I would be lying to say that that question never crossed my mind and I’m almost certain it’s crossed the others. But I really don’t know.
“I only know that after I die, I get some extra life to watch over the next death, seeing how long it takes for them to pick up the magic and help give them an extra little push when they need one.” I told the truth and the others seemed satisfied with the answer but the question still bugged me in the back of my mind.
After the day had ended and I was lying in bed, I still couldn’t stop thinking about that question, it was plaguing my mind.
The years passed, the question never truly leaving me, but I started to worry about it less and less over time.
My daughter was 17 when I was hit by a car and died. I woke up in the dark room with death theirself.
“Hello Marinette, it’s time for you to watch over the next death.”
“I- understand, who and where are they?”
Death gave me their name and location in France. I went to a small city far from my family. The next death was a sweet little girl, I watched her grow up, I saw her first steps, I heard her first words. Vocational she and her family would take short trips to the city to meet with her Aunts and Uncles. I always took those chances to see my family and it hurt even more to watch them age without me. I stayed the exact same as the day I died. The girl didn’t learn her magic until she was 35,it might have taken longer but I choose to give her a strong push. During the years, I’ve watched numerous deaths take first Chloe, then Nino, next Adrien, and finally Alya.
Finally, the girl stood where I was 45 years ago, in the circle of deaths. After she went back to the living world, the past deaths started to fade away a bit, I turned to death.
“Death?”
“Yes Marinette?”
“What happens to me now?”
“Your choice, you can either stay as one of the circle, helping rule the underworld when we’re not speaking with a new one of our kind, or, you can meet your friends on the other side and stay in paradise for eternity.”
I didn’t even need to stop to think. “With all due respect, I would like to spend my time with my friends.”
“And so you shall, you did good, you deserve this.” they started walking me through the all too familiar dark room when it started to light up with, my memories?
I looked around in awe at the colours and pictures glowing around me showing me joyous memories.
“Here they are.” Death stopped and I looked off into the distance to see them, the same age we all met. They waved me over and I felt my body race towards them, I could feel them scoop me up in a hug, welcoming me.
“You took too long girl.” Alya teased, lightly punching me in the arm.
“Don’t blame me, the girl I was watching after took 35 years!”
“Well, you’re here with us now, and that’s what really matters.” Chloe squeezed my shoulder.
“I’ve missed you honey.” Adrien wrapped me up in his arms and kissed my forehead.
“I’ve missed you two, it hurt so much to lose all of you.”
“I know, but we won’t have to worry about that anymore.”
“Hey, so, I stuck with the agreement that we wouldn’t do anything fun without Marinette while in this paradise, but that beach has been calling my name and taunting me for over 20 years, let me enjoy my afterlife.” Nino called backing away towards a beach I looked over before.
“Yeah, after what we went through in life with my aunt, we deserve to have some fun.” Chloe grinned racing Nino to the shore, Alya sprinting after them, eager to win. Me and Adrien walked slowly, falling behind them. I took off my shoes when I stepped onto the sand. I felt myself sink a bit with every step but not in a conserving way. The sand was soft and tiny. The magic of the afterlife kept the sand from sticking annoyingly to me and I continued walking.
“So, how were you while you watched the next one?”
“Boring, there wasn’t much to do.” I shrugged. “How was death without me?”
“Dull.” he didn’t elaborate. I stopped walking and looked around, this was the most vibrant place I’ve ever seen, how could it be dull?
“How so? It’s so beautiful here.” Adrien stopped and looked me in the eyes.
“Because it wasn’t complete, it was missing you, you could light up even the darkest days.” I flushed and turned my face away to conceal my smile.
“Ra-race you to the water.” I took off in a sprint, Adrien close behind.
The Afterlife was perfect, I never had any regrets on choosing to spend it with my friends, I was happy to spend the rest of eternity here, spending my days without a care. My time as death is over, all my responsibilities gone and passed on to the next death. I was finally at peace.
My eyes shone watching the sunset in the distance with my friends, the sky glowing with colour as the sun disappeared for the time being in our perfect world, Adrien watched me as I stared at the last sliver of light before it was gone for a few hours. I turned to face Adrien, curious.
“What?” I frowned a bit, grinning.
“Nothing.” He glanced away, smirking. “I just will forever love your bluebell eyes.”
-------------
Guys! Its the end! I'm crying right now, I don't want it to end. But hey, the good news is that currently, I'm writing some mini scenes to post tomorrow so its not completely over. This is were the story ends, yes, but their were scenes i really wanted to write and didn't get to. So far, I've written Marinette’s Interrogation, Adrienettes Wedding, and Chloe's first date because I didn’t want Chloe and Amelia's relationship to be to random and fast so you get a peak into it. If you have any more scenes you want to see that I didn't list or you just wanted to read, let me know, same with any questions you have for me or the characters.
Anyways, I hope you enjoyed the conclusion and have an amazing rest of your day! Thanks again for reading!
