Reunite
Bucky had broken into the Hydra lab in Pensacola Florida and rescued his wife as they were adjusting her pain receptors in her new metal arm through a device connected to her brain. When he broke into the room, the surgeon turned Nadenka's pain receptors all the way up. The slightest touch felt excruciatingly painful. They were closer to New Orléans than New York. So they headed towards her family home since Lily told Bucky about her family and what they were. Bucky had to be careful about how he moved his wife. Before lifting her up, he wrapped her in a lab coat to cover her bare torso. He had stolen a small four-door sedan, placed her in the passenger seat, and drove as fast as he could without getting pulled over.
While driving Bucky pulled his phone out of his pocket and saw the screen was shattered and it wouldn't turn on. He was unable to get a hold of anyone until he reached New Orléans. The drive took a little less than three hours, whereas the drive to New York would have been closer to eighteen hours. Lily kept as still as possible so her pain levels wouldn't increase. She tried her best not to cry, but the pain came in waves so intense she couldn't help herself. Bucky kept looking at her and saying, "I'm so sorry doll. We're almost there. Just stay with me." He knew the pain she was feeling and couldn't help but feel helpless seeing his wife suffering.
The moon shone brightly in the sky as Bucky pulled into New Orléans, stopping a short walk from the Mikaelson Compound. He got out of the car and raced over to the passenger side to open the door. He crouched down to look over his wife before running a gloved hand over his face. Lily had not moved since Bucky put her in the car, her body turned to face the door. She was pale, sweaty, and her whole body was shaking. Fresh tears streaked her face as she looked at her husband. "Doll, I'm sorry but I'm going to have to pick you up and walk from here," Bucky watched as Lily whimpered and her chin quivered.
Before he could move to pick up his wife, he was approached by three men. One of them spoke, "Is there a problem?" Bucky, still crouched, maneuvered his body to shield Lily from their view which did not go unnoticed. Bucky shook his head, "No. Just trying to get my sick wife home." The first guy leaned over to see into the car. His eyes widened at the sight of his adoptive sister, "Lily."
Bucky stood up quickly while pulling a gun from its holster, standing in front of Lily. He asked the men, "Who are you? How do you know that name?" He watched the men closely, they showed no obvious signs of fear. Bucky scanned the men, trying to figure out if Lily knew them or not. She never described what her family looked like.
The first guy spoke, "My name is Marcel. This is Klaus and Elijah Mikaelson." They observed Bucky for a moment, seeing if he heard of them. None of them had seen Lily's eyes widen. Bucky raised his gun, aiming at Marcel's chest, "How do I know you're not going to hurt her?" The men looked at each other. They knew they could easily kill Bucky to get him out of the way but Lily would be heartbroken.
The staredown was broken by a small, shaking voice, as quiet as a whisper, "Bucky." Keeping his body facing the men, he lowered himself to speak with his wife. He doesn't say anything, just nudges his head in the direction of the men. Lily gives a very subtle nod. Bucky lets out a sigh of relief, holsters his gun, and stands up. "She can't be touched. Her pain receptors are in overdrive, the smallest, softest touch is excruciating."
Elijah turns around and walks a few feet away, pulls out his phone, and calls Freya, "We found her." The overjoyed voices of Hope, Freya, and Kol could be heard. Elijah continued, "There's a problem. She can't be moved or even touched without being in severe pain." A moment of silence before he heard pages of a book being turned, then Kol came onto the line, "There's a spell to dampen the pain." Elijah tells Kol, "We're half a block from the compound near the tea shop." He rejoins the group after hanging up.
Marcel was talking to Bucky, "What happened?" Bucky looked at his gloved hands, he pulled the glove off his left hand and showed them. The glow of the moon and street lamps glisten off his Vibranium hand. "Hydra tends to modify their soldiers, making them less human, more pliable, and dangerous. They did the same to her left arm. It's constructed in a rare metal called Vibranium, stronger than steel and extremely lightweight. Part of the surgery is reconnecting nerve endings. When I broke in, they were testing her pain receptors and that's when they put them in overdrive."
Klaus has been uncharacteristically silent, not wanting to speak for fear of lashing out in anger. Not towards Lily or even Bucky but towards the people who have repeatedly hurt his youngest daughter. He has knelt down in front of Lily, as close as he can get without touching her. Even though he wants to, he wants to hold his little girl and never let go. He clears his throat, "I am so, so sorry Little Flower. When everything happened that day, I should have trusted my instincts. I shouldn't have listened to your mot...to Hayley. You can blame me all you want..."
"I don't blame you, dad. I never blamed you," Lily cut her father off. Her voice was so quiet someone without enhanced hearing wouldn't have heard her. Her body tensed as another wave of pain hit, causing her to hiss, her eyes squeeze shut and new tears stream down her face.
Lily takes short quick breaths through her nose, waiting for the pain to level out. She opens her eyes to see her father sitting even closer. Bucky was hovering behind Klaus. Lily's voice wavers as she speaks, "There were so many times I wanted to burst through the doors at the Abattoir. Each time I was sent somewhere close by, I would come to the French Quarter, and just watch everybody. One time, I saw Hope walking home by herself. She walked right by where I was hiding. She was so close, but I was a coward. Too afraid of what the family would think of me, or if you had forgotten me. I sent Hope some of my memories because I felt that was the end. Truthfully, if Bucky hadn't shown up Lily would have been killed, even Nadenka...only left as a mission-driven shell answering only to Blue Wolf." Klaus opened his mouth to reassure his Little Flower that she is not a coward, however, at that moment he heard Kol's voice.
"We're here," Kol, Freya, and Hope showed up with one of Esther's grimoires. Klaus was going to stand up and move out of the way when a question popped into his head. He looked at Lily and asked, "Have you activated your vampire side?" Lily silently replied, "No". Klaus stood and moved next to Elijah, "If the spell doesn't work, there's our other option." Elijah hummed his agreement since he heard their conversation. Kol held the grimoire open as Hope and Freya chanted the spell to dampen the pain but could not stop it completely. Once they were done, all that was heard was Lily's even breathing. Freya turned to her brothers, "She's asleep." Klaus quickly moved to pick up his Little Flower, heading back to the Abattoir.
Bucky retrieved his backpack from the back seat of the older Toyota Camry. Marcel points to the car, "Aren't you going to take the car?" Bucky shook his head, "Nope." "Why not?" Marcel asked. "It's uh...stolen," Bucky sheepishly answered. "I planned on coming back later to dispose of it," Bucky wanted to stay close to his wife for now. "Don't worry about it. I'll have someone deal with it. Were you followed?" Marcel asked. "No. There was nobody left at that base and the security cams were shut down. It will take some time before Hydra figures out what happened." Marcel stopped Bucky, "Should we add more security to the Abattoir?" "I would. Hydra will stop at nothing to get Lily back. Most of them are human but there are some like me. However, there are none like Lily which is why they want her so bad," Bucky stated.
Now concerned for their city and those he considers family, Marcel called one of the French Quarter vampires and informed them of what was going on and to be on high alert. He then ordered one of the vampires to dispose of the stolen car. The end of the conversation could be heard as Marcel walked into the compound, "Keep your eyes open for anyone who comes off as suspicious, doesn't matter if they're local or a tourist. Keep me posted."
The group entered the compound shortly after that. Finn, Rebekah, and Davina were shocked and appalled by the condition Lily is in when they saw her in Klaus' arms. He carefully ascended the stairs to the second floor. Klaus laid his daughter down on the bed in the room that was designated hers so many years ago. He pulled up a chair and sat next to her bed, not wanting to leave her side any time soon.
Bucky could see her bedroom door from where he stood in the courtyard. Elijah was curious, "How did you know to come here?" Bucky sat down his backpack on a table, opened it, and pulled out a black, leather-bound journal. He handed it to Elijah, "Lily would tell me about her life before the Red Room and Hydra. She just never described what any of you looked like.
"Whenever the Red Room or Hydra sent her out on missions, if she was close enough, she'd come to the French Quarter. And I've been to New Orleans a few times, so I knew my way around." Bucky gently turns the pages of the journal in Elijah's hands, "Both Wolf and Winter's activation phrases are written here. Those phrases are still in here," Bucky tapped his temple with his free hand.
"We were looking for help to remove their triggering effect. Hydra took Lily when they bombed an airport terminal, and we were separated." He ran his hand through his hair, "May I use a phone? Mine was shattered. I need to update Stark and Vera." Elijah handed Bucky his phone after unlocking it, "I know who Stark is, who's Vera?" Bucky had his head down to dial Vera's number first, "Her Beta." Several pairs of eyes turned to Bucky when they heard that. Klaus even came out of Lily's room and stood against the banister on the second floor.
Bucky put the phone on speaker, and on the third ring it answered, "Hello?"
"Vera, it's Bucky."
"Bucky, Maine was a bust."
"Pensacola wasn't."
"You found her. Where are you?"
"New Orleans."
"Ah, ok. How is she?"
"Um.."
"Bucky??"
"Well..."
"Buck, what the hell is wrong with my Alpha?!" Vera growled at Bucky.
When Vera said that, everyone turned towards Bucky and listened to the phone call. Klaus turned to look at his sleeping daughter then back to Bucky.
"When I found her in the med-lab, I had interrupted the final portion of her Vibranium arm attachment. They were testing her nerve endings when I crashed through the door. Her pain receptors were pushed to the limits. Her aunt and twin had to use magic to lessen the pain. She fell asleep when they were done."
"Shit." Muffled voices could be heard through the speaker phone. "Delta team is passing through Baton Rouge and will be on their way to you. They report Garrett has been in Houston for the past month. Garrett and his team were establishing a new location, but have been radio silent the past few days."
"Have the Delta team stay on the outskirts of the city until further instructions."
"Will do. Have you called Stark yet?"
"He's next to call."
Vera could be heard exhaling a breath of relief, "Take care of our Alpha. She is your wife after all." Vera quickly cut the call.
The silence was deafening. The clearing of Elijah's throat came from behind Bucky, "Would you mind explaining?" Bucky handed the phone back to Elijah. He looked around the courtyard to see all eyes were on him. "During her time with the Red Room, on the nights of the full moon, she would be locked in a cell. After Lily was in her wolf form, Dreykov would toss a few girls in there with her every couple of months. Those who survived were examined then isolated until after the next full moon. Lily told me about her werewolf curse, but she thinks the super serum and various other experimentations altered it. Her venom doesn't kill humans, it turns them." Everyone in the Abattoir didn't think they could get any angrier, even Marcel's vampires are wanting to rip these people apart and they don't even know the whole story.
"Some of the girls stayed in the Red Room to try and stay near Lily, some were declared insane by the lead doc. None of them were actually insane, they were smuggled out and sent elsewhere. The doc in charge was an undercover agent from SHIELD who tried to get as many girls out as they could without raising suspicion. The girls were sent to Montana to another agent whose neighbor was a werewolf. Lily was with the Red Room for twelve years, activating her wolf after that first year. So two to three girls every couple of months for eleven years equal to a little under 200 girls give or take. Over half of them survived. Vera is her Beta. She was in the first group of girls, and at the age of eight, she became a werewolf. Vera stayed as close as she could to Lily until Hydra got Lily. Then Vera divided the pack up into teams, working to track and destroy Hydra and their affiliates."
Bucky was trying to stay away from the subject of being married to Lily. He's not really scared of anything. However, having the Original Hybrid as a Father-in-Law, and the rest of the Original family of vampires as in-laws is sweaty palm-inducing. He was unaware that they knew he was married to Lily.
After the group returned to the Abattoir, Hope went into her room and retrieved her iPad. Hope had gotten the idea to contact Tony Stark about helping Lily after seeing all the tech surrounding Mister Stark. She was walking out of her room as she was video messaging Landon, "Hey, is there any way you could connect me to Tony Stark? We need to get in contact with him." "That's a weird request. Why do you need to contact THE Tony Stark?" Landon asked his girlfriend.
Hope continued to walk towards her sister's room, "We found Lily. She's in bad shape and needs help beyond what we can do for her. She lived in Avengers' tower with her husband, Bucky Barnes, also known as the Winter Soldier." "I'll see what I can do. If I get through, I'll send the call to your iPad," Landon turned on his own iPad. "Thanks, Landon. Talk to you soon," Hope ended the video call and stood next to her father.
Klaus could hear Elijah talking to Bucky once again about their trigger phrases from where he stood on the second floor. He was keeping his eyes on both his children. He felt relieved to have Lily and Hope within reach, but now he is concerned about Lily's physical pain and mental health. "What about using compulsion to erase the memories involved with the phrases?" Klaus asked Bucky without turning around. Bucky shook his head, "That won't work. Our minds have been scrambled too many times, mine more than hers. More than likely it would actually put our alternate personas into flight or fight mode, endangering everyone around us." The three men were lost in thought when Hope's iPad got an active notification.
