Chapter 20
Lyla didn't question Lennon or what he did. She thought it was odd that he made a fire pit in the backyard before clearing out the nightstand drawer.
He was resolute in his nature, bringing the entire drawer downstairs. The condoms were thrown in the trash, and the drawer was put on the table in front of Lyla. He then walked out the door to the fire pit, stoked the fire and tossed an envelope into it.
She watched curiously as he poked the wood, pushing the envelope into the flames with a long twig. Lyla chewed on her bottom lip as a tear streamed down her cheek. His face said it all. He was pissed off and struggling to remain composed. All of it was done for Lyla, and she knew that he was hiding something horrible from her. She knew that the contents of that envelope were so bad that it went straight into the fire without even showing her.
Lyla assumed. She believed they were either nude or pornographic pictures. Wiping away the tears, Lyla pulled the drawer closer and looked at the contents that remained. There was a diary. Lyla picked it up and set it aside. She didn't want to read it but would allow Lennon to read it on her behalf. He was impartial, and he wouldn't get upset like she would.
Underneath the diary was a large picture of Eloise and Nironsa. She smiled at how happy they looked. Hugging and looking like a young couple in love. They were dressed up to go somewhere fancy. Nironsa was wearing a tuxedo, Eloise was in a glittering white dress. Lyla frowned as she looked at Eloise's hand. She was wearing a ring.
"Shit," she hissed under her breath.
Somehow, her sixteen year old daughter had managed to get married without her permission. She wondered how it was possible and then wondered if Gamichee and his sycophantic little lap dog knew about this.
Spying Lennon's phone, Lyla picked it up and searched through the contacts.
"Lennon," Gamichee said with happiness.
"Actually, it's Lyla. I have a question for you."
"Of course, my dear. Fire away."
"Did you know that your brother married my underaged daughter?"
Her question was met with silence. Frustrating silence.
"Tell me, Gamichee, did you know?"
"No," He admitted. "Unfortunately, if she had a fake id, then she wouldn't need your input. I am incredibly sorry, Lyla."
"Yeah, me too. Lennon's in the backyard burning something he found in Eloise's drawer. He wouldn't even show me so you and I can guess what it was, right?"
Gamichee sighed heavily.
"I don't know what I can say to you that will make this right, Lyla. Nironsa only ever came near me when he wanted something. I met your daughter once, and it was at a time when she seemed to be nothing more than a passing fancy. Still, I asked Carson to watch over them, and he said that by appearances, it looked as if she was working as his assistant. He saw no evidence that they were together but assumed it because this was my brother. We knew what he was like. I sent messages when my calls went unanswered. I told him to end it until she came of age. I was told to mind my own business."
There was a knock at the front door.
"I have to go. Someone's at the door."
"I'm sorry, Lyla, I really am."
"Yeah, I know."
Once the call was ended, Lyla knocked on the window. Lennon looked up at her as Lyla flicked her head. She assumed it was Adley and Merissa. Opening the front door revealed someone else entirely. It was a young woman dressed quite nice, perhaps a little skimpy for the cool evening. Beside her on the top step, was a box and a basket. The woman still had her hand wrapped around the basket even if it was resting on top of the box.
"Hi, I'm looking for someone, and I think this was her house. Is this your daughter?"
The woman held up a picture of Eloise. Lyla nodded with tears in her eyes.
"I'm sorry for your loss. Ellie was a cool chick. I really liked her."
"Thank you," Lyla whispered, wondering who she was.
"Anyway, I'm assuming that you don't know what was really going on. Whispers have been going around, and no one really knows the exact truth. I came here because I've spent all this time searching for you. No one knew who you really were."
"Why didn't you ask Gamichee?"
The girl scoffed, rolling her eyes.
"Yeah, good one. Go and see the boss's brother that we were warned to stay away from. Nironsa might be dead but that doesn't make things easier. He's still got his lackeys that ensure his ideals are lived up to. Anyway, I told them that this was the right thing to do. We don't have the right to assume anything, and really, the kid is better off with his grandmother, right?"
Lyla stared at the girl.
She offered an awkward smile and pulled back the blanket in the basket. Tucked in tight, asleep was the tiniest little creature.
"So, to answer your questions because, like I said, I'm assuming you didn't know. Yes, this is Ellie's baby. She had him a couple of days before that night. He's all good, taken to blood feeding easily, putting weight on and sleeping well. I've got some more stuff for you."
The girl handed over the basket, Lyla felt her legs collapsing. Lennon reached out to grab the basket and Lyla before both hit the ground. It was at that moment that Adley and Ris appeared, frowning at the scene before them. Lyla was at the door crying into a basket, Lennon beside her trying to comfort her as best as he could and some random chick delivering baby furniture.
"Is this how vampire babies are delivered now?" Ris asked Adley.
He grinned as he shrugged. It didn't matter how they were delivered. What mattered now was he was an uncle, and that little being over there, he was going to howl his first words.
