Chapter 10

As expected, Lennon was angry. Currently, he wasn't talking to them. He was yet to see the truth about the vampires that he called his new friends. No one had told him that Lyla had Aneska. No one wanted to start that fight. The last one was bad enough. The mood in the truck was uneasy. Diego thought that at any given moment, the powder keg at the far end of the truck would be lit, and he'd start yelling at everyone again.

Lennon leaned into the corner, trying to dull the monster headache that he had. His face hurt, and he was hungry. All of it paled to the treachery that was just a short distance from him. They didn't see that he finally had a connection. He was getting closer to the answers that he's always craved. It was gone now. Lennon knew that if Lyla had anything to do with it, they'd all be dead. If there was some bizarre event that might have altered that, they might still be alive, but he doubted it. Even if they were, he knew that they would not be welcomed again.

Looking out the tinted window, Lennon saw a familiar sign. He'd had enough, and he wanted out.

"Pull over." he called out.

Everyone turned and looked at him.

"Now,"

Oscar was a little uncertain as to why they hadn't reached Isaac's house, but Lennon sounded annoyed so, he did as the vampire asked. When the car was stopped, Lennon opened the doors and got out. Lyla moved to the back of the truck, watching as he walked away.

"This is it? This is what you're doing?"

Lennon stopped and turned. For a moment, he thought that he was too angry to answer Lyla, but he remembered that he didn't care.

"Yeah, it is. Your efforts, while noble, were incredibly wrong. They were a chance of finding out the truth about my past. That's gone now."

"And what about Eloise? I want the truth as well, Lennon. Was my daughter's death for nothing, or is this about you? Is it ever going to be anything different, or will it always be about you? It's terrible that you didn't have your parents, and I'm sorry that you were taken from them and lied to, but it's nothing compared to seeing my child tossed out of a car, dead and covered in blood from the great gaping gash in her neck. You don't know what suffering is. You don't know what it's like to bury someone so young and innocent."

The pain would never die. Lyla knew that. Days and nights have passed, and it still felt like that night had only just happened.

"You couldn't see what Charlton and his friends were doing to you and what they were planning, but we could. Maybe one day you might realise what was going on. I hope for your sake that it's not too far away because your friends might not be around when you do."

Lennon was angry. He didn't think that he'd ever been this fired up before.

"Go to hell,"

Lyla huffed, amused and hiding the hurt.

"Already there," she cooed, then climbed back into the truck.

When Lennon turned to walk away, Lyla closed the doors.

"What was this Charlton up to, anyway?" Oscar called out.

As she sat back in her seat at the front of the truck, she sighed heavily.

"Lennon's pureblood so was Charlton. All of them were. The way that he spoke about turned vampires made me concerned so, I followed them. He told someone that turned vampires are a disgrace to their world and needed to be removed. I thought he was just all talk, but the other vampire said something about the deaths. They were killing turned vampires and pinning it on humans. Then they said that werewolves needed to be added to the list once they'd dealt with the turned vampires. Pureblood vampires only. Lennon would be fine, but for the rest of us, we'd be dead."

"Did they threaten your lives?"

Lyla nodded grimly.

"Not directly to us but in the conversation. They said that Lennon's friends would be removed from this world by the full moon. We were only kept alive in the beginning to befriend Lennon, to make him believe that everything was fine. They wanted him to be settled enough to feel a part of their coven and angry at us that when we disappeared, he wouldn't care."

She hated that he'd fallen into their trap. Lyla knew why. He was so desperate for answers, he'd take whatever was given to him. There were times when Lyla thought that about Eloise. All she wanted was answers. She was pretty much there. She knew who killed her daughter, and she knew why. Other things had cropped up along the way, little things that needed answers.

"No matter how much we said to him that we wanted to leave, he wouldn't hear it. They were nice. They'd opened their home to us and were keeping us safe from Gamichee. I'd rather take on Gamichee any day of the week. Charlton was hiding something, and it was far darker than anything I heard."

Oscar slid the truck to a stop next to the driveway for Isaac's house. He looked down the long path and saw that he'd returned home.

"Well, kids, this is your stop. It's been fun."

"Thanks for everything. I know Lennon doesn't seem appreciative at the moment, but he'll come around eventually."

The back door opened, and the trio got out. Isaac smiled and returned the wave to Oscar. His gaze turned to the group that was making their way down the driveway. They were missing one, and given that the remaining three were dressed for war, Isaac feared the worst.
