Chapter 10
Lyla looked at the bed, trying not to curl her nose up at it. There was nothing else because it was usually only Lennon in this bed and Adley in the other room. Taking the lounge was not an option as it was cold, and there were a limited number of blankets. Limited as in two.
Adley and Ris were sharing, and if Lyla wanted to be warm, she had to accept that sleeping on the thin frame narrow bed with Lennon was the only option available. There was, of course, an underlying and unsaid bonus of this situation. Hearing the door click behind her, Lyla restrained the smile and glanced over her shoulder at the vampire.
Lennon stalked in the shadows, watching the delicious prey before him. It was not blood that he hungered for. The only problem was, they were in a weird place at the moment. It was getting better, but he didn't know what was appropriate. What he wanted and what was right could be the same thing, and they could also be miles apart.
The kiss still burned on their lips, reminding them that the passion was intense and to ignore it would only make it grow more. As Lennon moved closer, Lyla continued to watch him over her shoulder. His fingers dragged down her spine, filling Lyla with ecstasy. As the sensations rushed through her body, she closed her eyes. It was just a moment to enjoy the delicate touch.
A heavy banging echoed through the building. Lennon huffed.
"Someone is going to die." he grumped.
Lennon believed the universe didn't want him to get laid. Fun time with Lyla was always going to be rare, she gave off mixed vibes, and when she was in a good mood, it wasn't ideal to be dismissive.
Turning out of the room, Lennon looked at Adley as he opened the bedroom door. The two of them knew that danger was on the other side of the garage door. No one ever came calling, and given the situation, they knew who it was.
The only problem was, they had limited choices for escape. Taking Lyla's hand, Lennon quietly followed Adley and Ris to the far side of the warehouse as the banging continued. Once Adley moved the false ceiling panel, he helped Ris and Lyla up into the narrow cavity. Lennon carefully unlocked the door to the underground tunnel, giving a fake view that would hopefully fool the uninvited guests.
Returning to Adley, Lennon put his foot into the linked hands. He was hoisted up into the cavity, turning to help Adley up.
"This is not how I pictured spending my morning," Lyla whispered.
"No one ever plans on hanging out with the spiders, Lyl's. Just don't move, don't breathe hard."
Adley put the panel back in place. There was a hole that he could see what was going on. Something cracked, echoing through the vast space. The roller door went up, and they listened to the heavy footsteps rush into the building. Orders were being barked to check all the rooms. Adley watched as a figure walked past his view, then called out that there was an unlocked hatch.
He didn't want to move, but Adley desperately wanted to know if they all went down the stairs to the tunnel. Listening, his ears twitched to the sounds of what was going on. One of the men was down in the tunnel, yelling out that he could see a lot of footprints.
More footsteps, more calling out about the marks on the dirty stone path. It was an old sewer system, disused for many years but perfect for the vampire that sometimes needed a shaded path out of this building. As for right now, Adley hoped it would draw their visitors away.
Continuing to listen, he smiled and slowly pushed back the panel. Lennon reached out, clutching his shoulder.
"Are you serious?"
Adley nodded. The light of the room highlighted his smile. Pushing the panel away, Adley swung down to the floor and crept to the hatch. As he lowered it, he glanced around the warehouse and checked that they were alone again. They'd all foolishly gone down the ladder to the tunnel. With the locks turned, Adley pushed a heavy cabinet over and smiled more eagerly than he's ever done. Lennon was impressed, Ris looked at him like she wanted to show her gratitude in private, and Lyla was stunned.
"So, we're good?"
"Yep. Adds man, you're a legend."
He did a sweeping bow, feeling rather superior.
"How long have we got?"
"Well, the tunnel is quite long. There are other ways out, but the government blocked them all to stop the kids from getting into it and making a mess. We have our little hole because we spent ages digging it. As for the only real exit point, it's about a twenty-minute brisk walk which will put them roughly at the club. I'm sure they'll realise that the footprints they're following are old and turn back. They'll probably waste a few more minutes doing that. So, I don't know. Maybe half an hour, tops?"
"It's a moot point when we have nowhere else to go, and the sun is out, so, even if we did, we can't."
Lyla looked at Ris, wondering how much sun she and Lennon could tolerate. The morning at the cemetery proved to Lyla that Lennon could take a fair amount and not be too harmed. Though, to be fair, she didn't know what he did after their little meeting. He could have returned to the shadows and repaired himself, spending hours trying to get back to the way that he was.
"There has to be somewhere that we can go, somewhere that Carson or boss man won't expect us to be."
Lyla smiled at the trio of terror. Her dark and devious smile was enough to make them intrigued, amused and concerned.
"I know the perfect place."
