Prologue

"Happy Birthday, Abigail!"

My mother chirped with glee as she danced around the table. She was always cheerful and bubbly. My father leaned down and lit the 4-shaped candle on my little chocolate cake. He pecked me on the cheek and began to dance about with my mom. I giggled as they twirled and hopped.

"Make a wish, Abby!" My father said, tapping my party hat.

I grinned up at him and quickly blew out the candle. It was easy to make a wish, because I had had one in mind for almost a year now. I wanted a brother. Maybe two. I had seen so many kids around town with brothers to call their own, and I wanted one, too. I always dreamed of what it would be like to have brothers chase me around and make up stories with me. To be honest, being the only kid is fun, but it gets awful lonely. Sure, Dad plays with me a lot, but I really want a kid my age I can play pretend with.

"What did you wish for, Ab?" Mom asked.

My dad pushed her shoulder gently and gasped.

"If she told you, it wouldn't come true, right Abby?" he said, nudging me with his elbow.

I nodded. I certainly wanted my wish to come true, so I kept my mouth shut tight. My mother laughed and bent down to my level.

"Well then, Abigail. Do you want to go for a picnic on Mount Ebott?"

My little blue eyes lit up.

I loved Mount Ebott! There were so many pretty flowers and it was so much fun to climb.

"Yeah! Let's go to Mount Ebott. I wanna pick the pretty flowers, again."

I jumped around a bit and laughed.

"Then it's settled. Tom, get the picnic basket. We're heading to Ebott!"

And so, we headed of to the coolest place ever: Mount Ebott.
