Hello New Friend

(A/n)
I'm an absolute slut for Killer's hairstyles here.

Also, I don't know if it's just sinus pressure from allergies or the wack meds I take a few days out of every month but I've been getting migraines more often this year than I ever have in my life. I would've finished this chapter sooner but I had to sleep off yet another migraine yesterday. It sucks ass since I've been really excited to get more writing done but hopefully I can find some pain killers that can take care of it. Last time I checked all the good stuff was bought out at the stores.

"So.....cute dog." You tried to start with some small talk.

Law was driving the truck with you riding shotgun. His large, fluffy, white dog was somewhat wedged between you two. His front half was spilling into your lap but you were fine with that. In fact, you took that as the dog's okay for you to pet it. So you were patting it's back while trying to erase the tense feeling in the air surrounding Law.

"Bepo."

"Sorry?"

"His name's Bepo."

"Oh."

The dog perked up at hearing his name, looking at his master questioningly and wagging his tail.

"Would Capone really be a threat if he came around for all this stuff?" You were dead set on getting him to talk to you.

He glanced at you before focusing back on the road. "If it was just one of us from the alliance against him, yes, he could be. I thought you knew about him."

"Not really. I'm still relatively new with all this stuff."

"What? How long have you been involved with...everything I guess?"

"Well, I've been doing small time stuff for the past couple years but I didn't get involved with gangs or anything until recently."

"And you've been the dragon for....?"

"Over a year now."

He shook his head. "You did well laying low for as long as you did (Y/n)-ya. That takes some skill for someone like you."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"With your devil fruit and way of living."

"What? Way of living?"

He sighed. "The Kid crew is known for how loud they are. Anything they do, people hear about."

"I haven't been with Kid's gang for long, only a couple months."

"So Eustass-ya wasn't hiding you away?"

"No." You shook your head, smiling a bit as Bepo nosed at your hand, asking for more pets. "I was on my own for most of the time, Killer actually scouted me out a little before I joined."

"Interesting." He grunted. He was trying to sound like it was a normal talk, but you could tell he was very invested in this. It was all new information to him after all. "So all the small time stuff you did before hand was solo?"

"Yep. I met someone who sets up clients and 'workers' and they got me started."

"The income couldn't have been anything great."

You chuckled. "No, it wasn't. But I made it work."

"You're telling me the dragon made a living doing petty crime and lived paycheck to paycheck?"

"In a really shitty studio apartment."

"I would've never thought that was the case."

"Killer wasn't all that impressed either, he was really happy when I moved in with him."

He smiled over at you, a genuine, interested smile. "You don't seem like the kind of person to be in Eustass-ya's gang."

You shrugged. "I joined for Killer, not for Kid. Though he isn't all that bad. Definitely annoying at times and a bit of a handful, but not terrible."

"I beg to differ." Law scoffed.

"What's the deal with you two? Kid seems to hate you and it looks like the feelings mutual."

"He's a classless asshole."

"Well, I can't argue that."

That earned a chuckle. "I like you (Y/n)-ya. What would it take to get you to switch affiliations?"

"The offer is flattering, but I think I'm good where I'm at." You turned him down. It was surprising to see him go from barely acknowledging you to making you a job offer, especially so fast.

"That's a shame, I think I could really provide you with better options than Eustass-ya."

You shook your head. "I came from a place where I was scraping by to make ends meet. Kid and Killer gave me friends and a stable life. There's not really anything else I could ask for and nothing else I need."

"I see..." He seemed disappointed but understood you couldn't be swayed.

You were stubborn anyway, if he pushed you'd push right back until he'd admit defeat. Life was damn near perfect now and you'd be a fool to try and change it.

"Humor me with this then, why did Kid suggest the alliance with Strawhat-ya and I in particular?"

You could spend all day going on about the details of the meeting that led to creating the alliance but that'd be a terrible idea. Staying silent would only make him suspicious as well. You'd have to make something up and fill Kid and Killer in on what you'd tell him when you saw them again later.

"Kid wasn't the one that suggested it actually, it was Killer." That part was true. It made sense and it'd feel more believable with a bit of truth sprinkled in. "And the reason behind getting together with a couple other gangs was for defense I guess. I'd received a tip from a friend that other gangs were gearing up against us after they knew I was with Kid."

Law seemed to buy that. "You're strong, there's no doubt about that, but even you won't be able to do much if one or more of the more seasoned crews decides you're too much of a threat."

"That's the conclusion we came to. Kid wasn't all that keen on it at first but we all agreed an alliance would benefit us. And then, as you know, we'll all be able to take out some of the other members of the worst generation as well."

"So that's it? Whittle away at the competition and keep you safe?"

"I wouldn't say safe per se, but out of reach of others, yes."

"That seems too smart for something Eustass-ya to do."

"That's why Killer suggested it. Kid wouldn't have set this up himself."

Law grunted as he pulled up to an unassuming strip of storage units. He seemed to be a grouch all over again. "You still didn't answer why it had to be me and Strawhat-ya."

As soon as the truck came to a stop, both of you hopped out. Bepo trailed after you, much to Law's distaste. You could practically hear his thoughts. Traitor.

"Well, Killer noticed Luffy seemed fine with me and he's friendly enough so he was an easy option."

Law nodded as he led you to the back of the truck and opened it up.

"And I hate to say it, but you were kinda chosen at random. We needed someone who was a safe choice, which narrowed it down to the worst generation, and then I made the suggestion."

"You suggested that Eustass-ya team up with me?" He asked, surprised.

"I'm going to be honest, I threw out a name and everyone but Kid decided it worked. He got outvoted."

He chuckled. "You amaze me (Y/n)-ya."

"I get that a lot."

You shared a smile, understanding each other a little better than before, and got to work.

Since you were with him, it was decided that the rest of his crew go with Kid or Killer so it was just you two at this location. That worked out well. There were two long lines of old, beat up storage units and they were crammed close together, allowing enough room for a couple vehicles to squeeze through at once. You could barely turn around in the cramped space, if there were others around it would've only been all the more difficult. Still, you made quick work of it and had the truck unloaded in a little over an hour. Law was happy to have it all organized how he wanted, he was able to direct you on where each crate needed to go.

It all ended up taking half of the units to house everything and even that was cutting it close. Law was a little worried himself that he hadn't set enough aside for the supplies until it was all properly stored.

From there, it was agreed that everyone would meet up back at the old storage warehouse to confirm all the cargo had been moved safely. Then the job would be considered done. It couldn't get more straightforward than that.

Except you and Law were fast compared to the others apparently. You made it back first and spent some time waiting around. When you got tired of waiting for them to come back, you grabbed a stick and started throwing it around for Bepo. He chased it happily with boundless energy. The dog didn't tire one bit, no matter how many times you threw it. But he did stop when you chucked it over near a pile of trashed wood.

He ran up to it and abruptly stopped to nose around the stack. You assumed it had to be covered in some interesting smells but he focused on one spot and started pawing at it insistingly.

"Whatcha find boy?" Curiosity got the better of you as you approached and bent over to see what had his attention.

You couldn't see it at first but you could hear it. There was the slightest shuffling under the wood and Bepo was doing everything he could to poke his nose through the spot closest the the source of the noise.

"Something down there?" Law came up behind you, peering at the pile.

"Yeah, Bepo's curious so I figured it's worth investigating." You stared pulling away slats of wood and tossing them to the side until you uncovered what you were looking for. You picked it up with an excited gasp. "Oh you poor baby."

"It's...a cat." Law stared at the small, scruffy mess in your hands and back at you questioningly. "A very dirty one."

"And it looks hungry too."

The animal in question was cradled comfortably in your arms, belly up and purring away madly. It was very friendly for something that looked like to went through hell and back. It's once silvery fur was a dirty grey and it's tail was half missing. But it's green eyes shone like it was having the time of its life.

"You should put that down. It might have fleas." He advised.

"No." You frowned. "Someone's gotta take care of....her." You double checked to confirm it was indeed female.

"Strays are normal, she will figure out how to make it or die trying."

"What if you lost Bepo and someone said the same thing about him?"

"I'd never lose him."

You rolled your eyes. "What if he ran away?"

Something akin to worry flashed across his eyes as he glanced down at his furry friend. "I guess I'd want someone to take care of him."

"Exactly." You chirped.

It was literally only moments after picking up the cat that you decided you'd be taking it home. Killer did offer to get you a pet when you first got together. He probably didn't imagine a situation like this when he suggested it, but still, she was going home with you.

It was right then that the man himself arrived. He pulled up with his truck and jumped out of it, a slew of Law's men trailing behind him.

"What's going on here?" He glanced at Law, you, and the mass of fur in your arms last.

"Ummm." You looked at Law for help but he simply shrugged and walked off to give you space. Bepo followed after him begrudgingly, still wanting to investigate the cat further. "I made a friend."

The look of alarm on his face suggested he thought you meant Law. But before he could start interrogating you on the details, you stepped forward and let him see what you were talking about.

"Is that supposed to be a cat?" He asked, poking at it's paws.

"Yes she is."

"She." He raised an eyebrow at you. "Don't tell me you want to bring this home."

"I do."

"(Y/n)...."

"You offered before."

"I know but–"

"Clover needs a home."

"Holy hell you already named it." He groaned, pinching the bridge of his nose between two fingers. Law snickered a little ways off, still in hearing range apparently.

"Yep." You smiled at him, lifting the cat to his face. She batted at his nose playfully and you could see him losing this battle.

"She's your responsibility."

"Of course."

"And we'll need to stop at the vet and make sure she's healthy."

"It'd be silly not to."

"Kid's going to kill us for this." He finally sighed, shaking his head.

You giggled. "You're the best Killer."

Clover seemed to agree as she purred away even louder. The friendly stray was getting a real upgrade in life and you bet she could tell.
