Desperate Measures
The week until your big job flew by. Most of the time was spent finding small jobs to do to keep busy or hanging out with Killer when he wasn't being called away for his own work.
Things with him had gotten interesting. Some nights you slept just fine alone and he stayed on the couch. Others, you'd shuffle up to him, blanket wrapped around your shoulders as you murmured to him that there was plenty of room in the bed for two. It was your not so subtle way of saying you wanted his company. You were trying your best to address your feelings without knowing what exactly to do.
Killer always answered well. He'd give you space when you suddenly decided the whole situation had you too vulnerable and warm up to you when you let yourself enjoy his company without overthinking things. Your moods were comparable to the oceans waves; calm and easy one moment and a complete storm the next. But you were trying to figure out thoughts and emotions you hadn't let yourself deal with before and Killer was considerate enough to understand that.
He never made a move to make things more intimate with you but things had definitely changed. Besides occasionally sharing the bed, you felt yourself gravitating towards him more often. You'd cuddle up on the couch, cook meals together, and go do things out in town. You were pretty sure it was almost like you were a couple. Except without all the super intimate parts.
Killer let the crew know you were around and not to be messed with so you were able to come and go as you pleased. You'd see Heat and Wire occasionally and they were always friendly. On the rare time you'd see Kid, he would just stare at you coldly without a word. People usually didn't scare you but he never failed to send shivers down your spine. As for the others on his crew, they seemed almost scared to even talk to you. If they'd even see you in the halls, they'd scurry away to do whatever business they were up to. You assumed it had to do with Killer's high standing in the gang. They were probably afraid of offending him if they messed with you.
Either way, on the day of your job you were lucky enough to know that most of the gang was off doing their own work or goofing off so the building was nearly empty. Even Killer was gone and you were able to leave without anyone seeing you. By the time you'd left and had made it a few blocks away, the sun was setting and soon enough you'd have to begin the dragon's work.
Ivankov had already explained it to you and technically you could've done the job at any time. The only reason you hadn't was it would've ended in many casualties and Ivankov made it clear to the client that you wouldn't be the cause of people's deaths. They weren't as keen on that part but they still agreed to letting you take care of the task. Really anyone with the right tools could do this, but they wanted to send a message.
You were supposed to destroy a collection of highrise office buildings. People weren't all that creative when they hired you, assuming all you were good for was large scale destruction. While that was your forte as the dragon, you wished you'd get something different every once in a while. Doing this at night meant the building were sure to be mostly cleared out. Doing it on this night in particular meant they'd be empty for sure. It was the annual celebration of the founding of the city and just about no one worked on this day of the year with the exception of restaurants and those employed at Sabaody Park.
The place would be bustling with festivities and the vast majority of the police force would be there to maintain the peace. There wasn't a better time for illegal demolition. And as for why the client wanted this done, you were told the buildings belonged to some competition from the same line of business and this would completely ruin them. Did you feel bad about putting literally hundreds of people out of work?
Not really.
They did things just as illegal, if not more so, than what you did and it's not like they wouldn't be able to recover. You were confident in the saying "if there's a will there's a way." They'd find their way one way or another.
You found an alley big enough to accomidate your large form when you decided to transform and waited for it to get fully dark. You were itching to just do it now and launch yourself into the air and speed around for a bit. It'd been ages since you last did it and it took a lot of effort to keep from doing partial transformations and quell your urges if only for a moment.
After an hour of you sitting in silence and being enveloped in darkness, it was time to move. You gladly let your body shift. It was like cool water flowing over you and through your veins. Feathers sprouted and wings branched out from your spine. Everything elongated and you let out a content sigh that came out more like a rumble, not far from a cats purr.
You checked over your feathers, puffing up your crown and twisting your head around to catch glimpses of it out of your peripherals. The big one Kid had plucked out had grown back, much to your delight. Once you had finished fawning over your feathers you jumped from the ground onto one rooftop and then another to get some height. And then you took off. It felt amazing to feel the wind under your sails and just be your dragon self again.
After doing a few lazy rolls in the air and taking a moment to bask in the feeling, you set your sights on the job at hand. The buildings were more towards the center of the city, a very short fly from where you were staying with Killer. If anyone was on the streets below, they'd be clearing out fast so you weren't worried about anyone getting harmed. The buildings were all nicely clumped together and you had a delightful idea of how to get a start on this.
You barreled towards the first one and dragged your talons across its side as you clung to it and whipped your tail around. It slammed into the neighboring one, shattering windows and making part of it crumble from the force. A few more hits and you'd created a big enough hole for you to leap through and start tearing it up from the inside. You were about halfway up it and if you could collapse the top half, the building would be considered done. You didn't have to turn it to complete rubble, but you had to make it unusable.
You thrashed around inside, using your weight to crumble the walls to the point that you could see the metal beams holding everything in place. They'd usually be hard to destroy, but dragon fire was extremely hot and could melt just about anything. And if you ran out of your fuel reserves, your teeth were able to tear through metal. It took a bit more effort, but it was more than possible.
With a deep breath in, you spat fire at three of the walls, quickly melting the metal and making the building groan from the now much greater effort it took to stay upright. You darted back out of the building and snapped your wings open to catch air, flying around to find the right spot to hit to send the top half tumbling. It was beginning to lean on the one side that still had intact beams, all it needed was a bit of encouragement.
You lined yourself up and flew at the weakest side, twisting at the last second to slam your body against it. Metal screamed under the pressure it could no longer carry and everything tumbled down in slow motion. You'd planned it all so that it'd fall right into one of the other office buildings and as soon as the debris made contact with the still structurally sound one, concrete crumbled and there was a deafening crash. If the law wasn't alerted to your actions before, they sure as hell were now.
To your delight, the second building went down with the first. You watched from the air as they were turned into useless masses of twisted metal and weakened concrete. There were only three buildings total and you already had two down. This was going well. Suspiciously so.
You were waiting for Kid to magically show up and start antagonizing you or someone else from the worst generation. But laying low for a while must have been paying off. No one was around and you hoped it stayed that way long enough for you to finish up. You needed the money and you'd only get it if this was done.
With that in mind, you flew to the last building and smashed in some windows, creating a few openings big enough for you to fit your snout through and shoot some flames in. Papers, desks, and everything in between immediately caught fire and burned hotly. The warmth from inside kissed your face. The windows that were still intact burst from the temperature and sent glass falling down to the street.
It had to be hot enough to cook a person but for you, the heat felt nice. It was a dragon perk. Not only were you fire proof, but you could withstand extremely hot temperatures like they were nothing. Even in your human form you had a decent resistance to heat. While a 90-100° day (farenheit) was a lot for most people, you were comfortable. The cold was another story, you didn't handle that quite as well.
You went down a few more floors, doing the same to each one to weaken the structural integrity of the building. It wasn't long until it started to groan and tilt slightly, the fire having eaten to the metal inside the walls already. Dragon fire wasn't easy to put out and consumed just about anything it came across. It wasn't unlike napalm actually, especially since it was technically created by a special "fuel" you spat out that caught fire once it reached your throat. You'd taken the time to look into how you worked a bit before and knowing what made you tick had proven beneficial. It taught you your limits.
That being said, you were running out of fuel. Your body would create more over time, but you were sputtering weak flames at this point. About ten floors were set ablaze though and that was more than enough to bring the building down, all you had to do was sit back and wait for it to happen. You bounced off the side of the building to sit on one of the exposed floors of the others you destroyed to watch it fall. It was bound to happen so you could have left but you wanted to make sure.
Blue fire lit up the sky and sirens sounded in the far distance, slowly approaching your location. They were far too slow. Your tail flopped around lazily, feathers fanning the close by flames and making them spit and rise higher. They reflected off of you, giving you a slight blue tinge. It didn't take long to tame your urges and now that you'd spent a bit of time in your dragon form, you were content again. The destruction wasn't exactly necessary but some part of you deep down inside enjoyed that too.
"I'd say this is a job well done."
You jerked your head around to find the owner of the voice right as the last building finally collapsed. Killer stood off to the side, skirting the flames to avoid cooking. He was still sweating hard, his shirt damp from it and his face glistening.
He wasn't supposed to be here.
If you were to run into anyone, literally anyone, you never wanted it to be him. You rose to your feet and snarled menacingly, tail cracking near him like a whip. Hopefully he'd take this as his cue to leave.
"C'mon Blue, that's no way to treat a friend." He smiled up at you and the snarl immediately dropped from your face.
Oh, what to do now?
