Amon

Mariane's husband's name was Amon.

Amon was lost from the rest of the world. He blinked and looked ahead of him. His eyes were blurred by something white and fluffy that seemed to be falling in front of him. Such a strange substance it was. Crystalline yet soft, and abundant yet strange. Homogeneous, and yet each piece unique.

He let one of the minuscule objects fall and land on his reddening fingertip. It actually felt warm in contrast to the air around him. He watched it melt into a quantum ocean on his tiny field of flesh. It seemed like he could almost feel his eyes widen or dilate to match the plain that he looked upon, whether it was the white-washed land under a bustling city bridge where he sat, or the relatively small world atop his finger.

Oh, right, he thought, the substance around him was snow. He genuinely hadn't remembered for a second, for his brain was cloudy and scattered. He was numb inside. His thought processes felt slow, as if they were shutting down, or freezing due to the cold.

He had been on his own outside like this for countless days. Not even knowing how he'd survived this long, he arose and started walking in circles as a desperate attempt to warm his body.

He had done his best to salvage warm places to sleep every now and then, and small portions of food as much as possible, but now he was running at one his ultimate lows for energy in every way. He had long since run out of the "luxuries" he had packed back in April.

This life that he lived was drastically different from any that most have experienced. The things that he used to want and think about everyday faded into oblivion. Stripped to the core, all that were now left were primitive instincts needed to survive.

I suppose that what you're actually wondering is why he'd left in the first place, and also, why he wanted to continue to live this way.

Well, first of all, let me make it clear that he had already thought about leaving before. Many times had it crossed his mind that he could do it. There was not much stopping him. He had even gone as a far as to start putting his belonging into a suitcase, and he had cut a small tear in the netting of the window in the bedroom at night.
You see, many of us have had the same sorts or thoughts as he had. The temporary plans to withdraw from society, to become a creature of darkness just as Mariane did.

Each time before, he had tried to come back to his senses, and succeeded enough to be a little more rational about solving his problems. Finally, one day though, life became too much, and he was forced to let go of any rational thought, and stopped thinking better of the idea.
Well, at least it was more rational than his other idea, and people call that suicide.

Now that I've cleared that up, I must explain why he wanted to disappear....

He had gotten to an all-time low point, where he had come to a crossroads of several options. He could hurt himself, hurt someone else, physically express how insane he felt, or get away. That was the level of despair that his mind had gotten to, and he was even past the point where one would feel that the world is meaningless. He felt that this already meaningless world was attacking him with full force.

Amon was one of the unfortunate (to say the least!) people who are cursed with days that literally feel like apocalypses. It is astonishing these ways that the human brain has of conjuring up these deadly paradoxes of hopelessness. To be more literal, he had bipolar disorder, and no one had known.

Now that he'd been living out on the streets, and even going in and out of something close to wilderness for so long, why hadn't he either given up on his quest to get away from life, or given up on life itself?

In a very, very strange way, it gave him strength to know that this time he had actually followed through on getting away like he had wanted to so many times.
He didn't yet long for his wife, because he didn't fear for how she would be without him. He didn't know that he still meant anything to her.
He didn't know when he wanted it all to end.
