Falling Into Place

Chapter 44:

Tobias' Perspective

This is the room where Natalie will be extracted, then executed. I gulp as I stare at the metal table. "What do we do?" Tris says.

I shrug my shoulders. There is a cart that has 2 syringes on it. One is purple, the other is a light blue. I recognize the purple as death serum, but I have never seen the blue, which I am assuming is the extraction serum.

I walk over to it, and pick up the glass bottle it's in. The shade of blue reminds me of Natalie's eyes, which will be a paler shade of blue after they inject it. The metal table has a huge light overhanging it, and chains hanging down the side of the bed.

"I have no idea what to do...." Tris says. "Neither do I. It's not like-" I say, but I am interrupted but someone swinging the door open. They have cuffs in their hands, and Tris dives for them but they throw her on the ground and cuff her.

I yell out, but I am also thrown on the ground, and cuffed. My mask is ripped off, and I am yanked back onto my feet. "Alright, it's pretty clear who you two are." the one who has Tris cuffed says.

"What do we do with them?" the one who has me cuffed says. "I know exactly what to do with them." the other one says. I throw myself around, but it's pointless. They rip Tris' mask off as I am being pulled down the hallway where Natalie is.

They throw the door open, and toss us on the floor. Tris lands on top of me, and she grunts as she rolls off of me. I look up, and Natalie has her head hung low and she's crying. I fumble towards her, and scrape my hands and arm on the concrete.

"Hey, it's me." I say as I sit in front of her. She looks up at me with those bright blue eyes. "I'm in a simulation aren't I?" she croaks. I turn to look at Tris and she's trying to get over to her. This would be much easier if we weren't cuffed.

I stick my foot out and hook it around the cuffs and drag her over. "Ow, that hurts..." she mumbles. "Sorry." I say. She looks at Natalie and starts to sob. I am kneeled in front of her, and want so badly to hold her face in my hands and tell her everything will be okay.

"Natalie, it's not a simulation. Look at me." I say. She looks up at me, and cries harder. "But that's what happened last time." she says through sobs. "Natalie listen to me." Tris says. Natalie looks up at her and stops crying.

This is killing me to see both of them, their arms chained up and crying. Especially one with a beaten up face. "What?" Natalie says. "This isn't a simulation. We are really here." she says. "HOW CAN I BELIEVE YOU?" Natalie shouts.

Tris starts crying and I am trying as hard as I can to not cry with them. Natalie bows her head, and tears continue to fall from her face. I don't know what to do to convince her that this is not a simulation.

"Oh gosh...." Tris says as she stares at the corner of the room. I look where she's looking and see a clock. 8:30.

"My time is up." Natalie says. Tris puts her head on Natalie's head and cries. "No no no no no no....." yells Tris through sobs. I start to cry and put my head on Natalie's shoulder. Lavender and honey.

I hear a door bust open. "Alright, it's time." someone says. Someone pulls me back, and I yell. "NO! NATALIE!!!!" Tris is being pulled back towards a wall and she is wailing. "NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!!"

They unchain Natalie and toss her in a huge black bag and drag her out the door. They slam it and there is pure, hollow silence. Until I hear Tris and I bawling. I fall on the ground.

This is it. Nobody can save her, nobody can save us. I roll across the floor towards Tris, and she rolls towards me. We collide and bury our faces in each other's shoulder. "It's all over..." she whispers. I don't bother disagreeing.

This can't be real. This has to be a simulation or a nightmare, anything but reality. The floor has never felt so cold, I have never found it this hard to breathe.

I think I fall asleep or I'm just hallucinating. Natalie stands there, her hand outstretched. "Come on, Daddy." she says. I reach out for her but she runs off into a field and I am chasing her. But I'm still sitting here.

"Daddy, stop!" she yells. I pick her up and start tickling her. She starts laughing and I laugh too, and fall in the grass. We lay there until everything disappears. I am still laying on the floor, crying into Tris' shoulder.

I start breathing heavily, and we fall onto the concrete. I close my eyes, and try to escape everything. But Tris' wailing reminds me that I am still here.

I start to stand up, and walk over to the chains Natalie was hooked to. I see blood dripping from them and cry harder. I don't think I have ever cried harder. This is beyond any pain that I have ever felt.

"Tris...." I moan. "What?" she says standing up. "We need to get these cuffs off." I mumble. "We can't." she says. I fall on the ground and lay there, staring at the dark ceiling.

I close my eyes, and fall asleep.

I dream of the night when Natalie was first brought into the apartment. Tris was holding her, wrapped in a black baby blanket. Tris had the biggest smile on her face, and I was a complete mess. We walked straight into her room and laid her in her bed.

She yawned with her tiny little mouth, and her eyes fluttered open revealing her bright, beautiful blue eyes. She looked up at Tris and I and smiled, moving her tiny little legs around. I remember asking Tris what were we gonna do now. We were clueless.

I kissed Tris, and looked down at Natalie. She had fallen asleep and Tris and I snuck out before she woke up. That night I woke up to Natalie crying. Tris and I ran into her room, only to find that she was hungry. Tris breastfed her and we went back to bed.

She started ro cry again, only this time I woke up. I walked into her room, and held her in my arms. I rocked her, and she finally fell asleep. I'll never forget the first time she smiled at us.

I wake up in a holding cell, Tris laying on a bench in the corner, biting her nails. I sit up, and look at a clock in the corner. 9:14.

Natalie's powers have been drained and I have no idea where she is now. What are they gonna do with her powers? Marcus is gone so he can't keep the powers for himself. I get up and walk over to Tris who is staring at the floor with a blank look on her face.

I sit down next to her, and hold her close to my chest. "They just gave me the update." she says. I stare at the wall, and lay my head on hers. "What did they say?" I say.

"Her extraction was finished fifteen minutes ago." she says. I gulp and hate that these words are about to come from my mouth. "And when is her execution?" I say wobbily.

"In thirty minutes." she says. I close my eyes and shake my head trying to pretend that this isn't real.

I then hear shouting, and multiple gunshots. Tris and I stand up staring at the door. It swings open revealing Uriah and Shauna standing there, with blue arm bands. "Come on, what are you standing there for?" Uriah yells.

I run towards him, and Tris follows. We run down the hallway, jumping over bodies. "What are you doing here?" Tris says. "Well, ever since you've been chased by the Bureaus, we've been forming an Alliance." says Shauna.

"For what?" says Tris. "Destroying the Bureau before they destroy us. We got half the factionless, and the whole entire Dauntless Compound down here, killing them." says Uriah. "Wait, so this is all to keep from the Bureaus killing everyone?" I say.

"Yeah, after they executed Natalie, they were gonna clone the serum, and inject all of us with it. We'd be mindless drones, running around burning  innocent people alive." says Shauna. I finally see where everything is falling into place.

Uriah hands Tris and I guns, and we turn a corner. "We have Natalie back at the Dauntless Compound." says Shauna. "Oh thank God, is she okay?" says Tris. "No, she has three broken ribs, a broken leg, her nose is fractured, and her powers have been drained." says Uriah.

I wince at what I just heard, and grab Tris' free hand. "Marlene and Christina went with Zeke to go get her powers back because she is the only one who can posses it. If anyone else has it, Natalie will die." says Shauna. "How do you know all of this?" I ask as we run up the stairs.

"We read the research in the lab." says Uriah. We run across ashes and more dead bodies. "We gathered a meeting yesterday with the factionless and Dauntless and told them about Marcus' plan." says Shauna.

"So now there's a huge war going on between them?" I say. "Yeah, and that's not even the worst part." says Uriah. We run out of the Bureau and they lead us to a car. We jump in as guns go off inside the building.

Shauna is driving, and she slams on the gas as Tris and I sit in the back. "What's the worst part?" Tris says. "We found out that there's more than one Bureau Compound." says Uriah.

CLIFFY! Well, I wrote this chapter in one day, and it took two and a half hours! WOO! It's not as long as I wanted it to be, but I think I'm gonna end this book on Chapter 46. DON'T WORRY, I AM MAKING A SEQUEL! Like I said, I might end it on Chapter 46, I don't know. But if I do, I promise I will try and get the first chapter in as soon as I can! Don't forget to vote and comment! :)
