"Us." Jungkook said curtly. "They gambled their kids." Jungkook said, his voice cracking with anger and some other emotion Jimin couldn't name. "I was ten and Jieun was twelve, we didn't know anything about it then."
"That's....God Jungkook that's awful-"
"He was sick, Jimin. It wasn't his fault. He needed help and I couldn't -"
"You were just a kid."
Jungkook shook his head. "My dad never held Jieun's mom to the debt. Never. He wasn't serious about it. He was a good man, a good dad."
Jimin reached up and wrapped his arms around Jungkook, holding onto him tightly. "I know," he murmured, "I know."
"For him it was the idea that excited him. The very definition of gambling their worlds. He never had any intention of following through on his victory. But Jieun's mom couldn't live with the guilt. She...took her own life. Then my dad got into a really bad car crash last year and everything he's ever won or lost fell onto me. Jieun showed up at my door two days after he died and challenged me to a game of cards. She put all of her mom's wins and losses on the table and I did the same with my dad's. I don't why - I just remembered how lost Jieun looked. I mean, she looked as broken as I felt so when she offered a game...I don't know. I don't know." Jungkook trailed off, shaking his head.
"And you lost." Jimin said, realizing. "That's....God Jungkook...that's so fucked up."
Jungkook laughed, actually laughed. "Thanks for your sentiment Chim."
"No really, that's ... Jungkook I'm so sorry. Can you get out of it? Is it the debt binding?"
"I tried, once." Jungkook said. "She showed up to a party I went to. I refused to humiliate myself; she wanted me to beg for her on my knees. I explained how we had no real debt to each other, that it was just a stupid game our parents had played and one game of cards doesn't change that."
"How did she take that?"
"Badly." Jungkook swallowed, he ran a hand down his face. "I've never told anyone this, Jimin. You can't tell anyone. You can't."
"I won't, I promise."
"Jieun waited. She didn't yell or make a scene, she's more clever than that. This is all a game to her, Jimin. She's patient. I thought I'd won after telling her off. This was after months of degrading myself for her enjoyment and I thought I finally won. Yoongi reached out to me a couple months after my dad died, offering me a job and a place to stay. It was like someone had thrown me a landline made of gold. This party was the first time I got to see him in years, it was supposed to be the night I escaped Jieun, escaped everything. I'd get a new job, a new home, a new life. She turned that landline into a noose."
"She's smart, Jimin. She only shows up around people I know when she knows it'd be in her favor. Yoongi, in fact, has only seen her twice, even if he refuses to remember it. The first time was at that party. She waited, observing how I hung around him, laughed with him, treated him like my family, and caught on that Yoongi was important to me. And she watched how Yoongi would look at the goofy extroverted kid with enough energy to single handily power half of Seoul. It took me forever to figure out why I recognized Hoseok at your apartment, Jimin. It's an intense thing, when Yoongi loves someone."
"Hoseok dated YOONGI?!" Jimin stared, mouth hanging.
"That was the night they broke up. I'd never seen Hoseok before, never met or heard of him, but it was clear when I met up with Yoongi that the two of them were dating. Jieun waited until Hoseok left to get a drink and I think she spiked it. She brought him to a room and waited, knowing Yoongi would come looking for him. When he found them, Jieun was half naked and so was Hoseok. Her bare back was to Yoongi, silver hair in a bun, and her lips sucking on Hoseok's neck. Yoongi doesn't remember her face, I've asked. He was too focused on his boyfriend who had been sober all night up until that point."
"They never spoke to each other after that and it's my fault. I think she drugged him, which is why your friend probably doesn't remember what happened and Yoongi's heart got broken because of it. I wanted to tell Yoongi but I wasn't sure how to without revealing Jieun. If I stepped out of line, if he found out, I wasn't sure what more she'd do. So no, I can't just refuse her. I can't. She's never forgiven my dad - or me - for her mom's death. Who knows if she'd hurt you next if I don't behave." Jungkook said, his heavy eyes slowly drawing up Jimin's body until they laid level with Jimin's thoughtful own.
"Jimin." Jungkook growled as his palm pressed into the mattress, the covers crushing into his hand. "Jimin. That night at the bonfire-"
"Jungkook you don't have to-"
"Do you know what that did to me?" Jungkook's drew like crackling thunder. "To have you see me like that? To watch the way you looked at me and not be able to -" the covers were practically going to rip from Jungkook's grip. His nails were digging so hard that Jimin slid his palm over Jungkook's hand and slowly unwrapped it from the bed sheets. "If I say no to her - if she hurt you - Jimin....Jimin I couldn't forgive myself."
"You guys were kids." Jimin said gently, picking up Jungkook's palm and pressing it to his mouth. "You didn't know."
"She doesn't see it that way."
"Do you think-" Jimin said, his fingers gently brushing against the wrapped gash on Jungkook's abdomen. Jungkook shook his head.
"See that's what doesn't make sense. She's not violent, Jimin. She's more creative than that. I really don't think the guy who attacked me had anything to do with her. He kept muttering something, God what was it?" Jungkook frowned, trying to picture the tall man who had attacked him at the park. He was covered completely, black jeans, black hoodie, black face mask. He smelled of alcohol and something sweet, like vinegar. He kept muttering something too, a single word.
Jungkook shook his head, unable to remember the word. When he looked up, Jimin light brown eyes were raging. His sweet voice, the sound like music, suddenly went very strong and very intent as he pouted the most threatening pout Jungkook had ever seen. "I might have tiny Jimin fists," he said, "but they are armed to kill. I don't care if she hurts you violently or not, it's torture her either way. It's wrong Jungkook. Trauma isn't an excuse for someone's behavior, only an explanation."
Jungkook smiled, the edges of his lips dancing on a disbelieving grin. He looked like he wasn't sure wether to laugh or cry. "I'm surprised you aren't running already."
"Your past doesn't define you, Jungkook. We'll figure this out together, okay? You're not alone in this, I'll help you. Don't get me wrong, your situation is some George RR Martin plot line, but I'm not scared away by it."
"I would be." Jungkook said, but he stared at Jimin as if he just handed him over the world.
"Well, that's what friends are for-" Jungkook leaned up and kissed him before he could finish the sentence. Jimin murmured and then melted into it, his mouth pushing against Jungkook's own hungerly as his tongue slipped across Jungkook's bottom lip. It tasted bitter, like dark chocolate, always like dark chocolate. They parted for a breath only shortly before Jimin settled on Jungkook's lap, linked his arms behind his neck, and arched his spine for a deeper kiss - the air between their lungs one and the same.
Jimin closed his eyes, letting each of Jungkook's touches shock him as his hands traveled up and down his body. He smelled like pine cones, pine cones and oranges and the smell was so familiar, a scent Jimin had craved for days, that he whimpered as it hit him at full force. Jimin had never opened the letter Taehyung handed him after the bonfire because of the scent. It lacked the intricacy of the real thing, like a cheap copy.
"I'm not just your friend" Jungkook growled as the last of his self control slipped away. He raised his chest, getting back on top of Jimin. "Not anymore. Not ever." His hand traveled up and down Jimin's leg, slipping into his jeans and lifting Jimin's body up through groping his ass. Jimin let out a sweet sounding moan, arching his back as his eyes closed.
"Well saying boyfriend right now cheapens the moment-" Jimin said softly as he leaned up to steal another long kiss.
"I seem to remember you promising to call me daddy-" Jungkook smirked, the bright mischievous glint back into his brown eyes. Despite himself, Jimin grinned back. The annoying sarcasm was back and somehow it felt like returning home. The tension that had been weighing down on Jungkook snapped away, like Jimin had released the end of a rubber band. He seemed lighter, his eyes brighter, his grin wider. Like a kid entering Disney World for the first time.
"You know, you should really buy me dinner first before revealing your kinks-" Jimin's words were cut off once again as Jungkook's lips found his own and he melted into them helplessly. This time, when Jungkook's fingers moved to his jeans, Jimin didn't stop the boy from undoing them. He didn't stop him from tossing the fabric to the floor, undressing the both of them so that it was only skin against skin. He didn't stop him when the kisses turned into something more, because he didn't want to. He didn't want Jungkook to stop.
Jimin had to fight a laugh from leaving his throat, wondering how the night had ended like this. Jimin turned on his stomach and gripped onto his sheets as Jungkook's body pressed into him. Trust me, Jungkook had told him before. Trust me. Jimin wanted to laugh now, so badly that it hurt. He understood why Jungkook was so afraid to tell him the truth about Jieun. He must have felt so alone for so long. That night Jimin made a vow that no matter what, no matter what Jieun threw Jungkook's way, Jungkook would never feel alone again.
