TAKE CARE OF THEM FOR ME
"We're here!" Elizabeth exclaimed as she and Steve entered the ruined church. "A bit late but here," she ducked out of reach from an arm of the robot before she kicked it into the wall.
Tony landed next to her, the palm of his red and gold suit raised and opened to fire. "About time," he chided. "Romanoff," Tony called through the earpiece. "You and Banner better not be playing hide the zucchini."
"Relax shellhead," Natasha's voice came in. "Not all of us can fly."
Elizabeth blasted one robot into another when Steve spoke from behind her. "Yeah tell me about it," he agreed before throwing his shield.
From the other end of the small church, Clint and Wanda walked in. Pietro went over to check on his sister before continuing on the task at hand. The sound of a metal fence crashing could be heard and Natasha exited the bright yellow bulldozer. She hopped down from the door with the Hulk close behind her.
"What's the drill?" She asked Tony as they all circled around the core.
"This is the drill," Tony waved a hand at the core. "If Ultron so much as touches this thing, we lose."
Thor swung his hammer at a robot. Making it fly past Elizabeth, ready for her to blast it to pieces. The last of the robots around them had been destroyed as Ultron came down to greet them. Let's just say he looked a lot bigger than she remembered.
"Is that the best you can do?" Thor challenged as he held his arms open.
Ultron held the palm of his hand open and an army of robots came from behind him. Stopping only a few feet from the team. All she could see was metal upon metal for as far as it could go. They all stood obedient and ready at Ultron's command.
Steve sighed heavily before sending a glare Thor's way. "You had to ask?" He groaned as he tightened the strap on his shield. Thor coughed awkwardly and avoided the rest of the teams scrutinizing gaze.
"This is the best I can do," Ultron announced.
Elizabeth interrupted with a sarcastic smile. "That's comforting," she commented while feeling her hands heat up once more.
If Ultron could glare at her, she was sure he would. "This is exactly what I wanted. All of me," he started with a sweep of his hands over all the robots. "Against all of you. How do you possibly plan on beating that?"
"Well like the old man said," Tony responded with a glance toward Steve. "Together."
Seemingly not being able to wait to get the fight started, the Hulk roared out impatiently. The army of robots took that as their battle cry before rushing up to them with their weapons raised to fire. The team all made a circle around the core, already stating that that was their number one priority.
Elizabeth had her hands raised as she fired blasts out at whatever oncoming robots as fast as she could. Beside her, Wanda's hands were raised as well. The two finding it somewhat easy to work together. Wanda covering whatever threats the two had overhead while Elizabeth focused on protecting their sides.
Too busy focusing on Wanda's side, she didn't realise the robot coming onto her with his arm raised to fire until Thor's hammer flew past her face. The wind rustled her hair lightly before the hammer broke the robot into pieces of metal.
It went on like that for god knows how long. Time seemed to blur as they all fought as a team. Every robot that they knocked down or destroyed another one seemed to take it's place. So they kept on going until the job was done.
Above her, she saw Ultron tackle Vision. Only for him to turn it around and throw the robot out of the church. Both Thor and Tony saw what was going on and followed Vision out of the church. There was the sound of something scraping against metal as the three all focused on using most of their powers on Ultron.
Elizabeth and the rest in the church proceeded to knock down robot after robot until they could see the army was slowly starting to die off. By her other side she saw the Hulk rip a robot in half before taking the head of another one in his mouth before biting down.
Outside, Elizabeth saw a very run down and burnt looking Ultron standing in front of Thor, Tony and Vision. Hulk saw what she was looking at and ran over to the metal man with a yell. He cut off whatever Ultron was about to say by punching the robot so far off into the distance that no one saw where he landed.
Finishing off the last of the robots inside the church, Elizabeth rested her hands on her knees and took a deep breath to steady herself. Looking around she saw that everyone else was kicking around the dismantled bodies of metal, making sure they really were 'dead'.
The only ones that were left around the core were Elizabeth, Wanda, Steve, Natasha and Clint. Those that could fly, namely Thor, Tony and Vision were helping out Rhodey make sure that not one robot left the flying rock. The Hulk and Pietro were off finding any stray robots on the ground.
"We have to move out, even I can tell the air is getting thin." Steve says to the small group. "You guys get to the boats. I'll sweep for stragglers."
The rest of them turned to Elizabeth, not sure what her plan was. "I have to find Thor," she told them. "Tony said he had something for us to do but the guy left without me."
They nodded at her words, Steve saying that they'll go together. "What about the core?" Clint asked, wondering who was gonna stay behind.
Wanda thought for a moment before deciding what to do. "I'll protect it," she said. Clint casts her an unsure glance to which she repeated the words he said to her before. "It's my job."
The archer nodded at her before looking at Natasha and nodded his head toward one of the many abandoned cars. "Let's go."
Steve and Elizabeth watched as the two left in a car. Steve made a move to leave but Elizabeth stayed back for a while to glance at Wanda. "Be careful," she told the girl before following after Steve.
***
"Is this everyone?" Steve asked as he stood between Thor and Elizabeth by the statue near the boats. They watched as people boarded the boats in groups until the place was practically deserted.
Elizabeth turned to look around at the place. Near the playground she saw Clint and Natasha park their car before going down to talk to calm down the Hulk. It didn't seem anywhere near successful since he continued to destroy a swing set.
"This is the last of them," Thor answered as Elizabeth kept a close eye on the others. Clint leaned back by the car as Natasha continued to try and calm down the Hulk. It didn't work as he just shook his head before retreating back away from her.
"Thor, Lizzie." Tony called out their names. "Remember that little project I told you about?" He asked as Thor and Elizabeth shared a glance before listening to what else the billionaire had to say. "I need you two to get back in the church."
"Couldn't have told us that before we left the place?" Elizabeth groaned as Thor laughed at her.
"Quit whining," Tony said. "We only get one shot at this so get your asses over there."
"What do we need to do?" Thor asked as he flipped his hammer with his right hand.
Tony cleared his throat as if preparing for a presentation. "You two have more or less the same thing going on with your powers. Thor's is lightning and electricity, and Lizzie's is essentially energy."
Elizabeth thought for a moment before interrupting. "I don't remember telling you that," she said suspiciously.
"I looked through your file," Tony answered her curtly. She didn't even know she had a file, but found it interesting, wondering what else her file contained. "Anyway, I, how do I make it so that you two understand."
"That was uncalled for," Elizabeth muttered in annoyance at Tony's dig at them. She didn't take it to heart, knowing she had her own degree in chemistry.
"Basically, Thor has to hit it with his hammer and you need to blast it with your energy. I'll be on the other end, so if we time it right, we'll manage to vaporise this floating rock and reduce the impact size. You two will have to leave as soon as it's done unless you wanna get vaporised too. Got it?"
Thor nodded before muttering something to Steve. "We got it," Elizabeth spoke for them both. "We're on our way."
"Hold on a minute," Elizabeth heard Natasha through the radio. She turned back to face the playground to see Natasha waving her over. "The lullaby isn't working on Banner, we need Lizzie to put him to sleep." The Hulk was getting further away from her as he picked up whatever cars he could find and throwing it across the field.
"Yeah I'm on it," she told the team. Looking at Thor she nodded at him, "I'll meet you at the church."
Without waiting for his answer, Elizabeth began to sprint over to where the three were. Clint now stood beside Natasha as the two watched the Hulk carefully. She was halfway to them when she heard the sound of the engine of the jet in the distance.
She looked up to see the Quinnjet coming up from behind a building, making a beeline toward Natasha and Clint. The guns of the jet fired at them, creating a loud noise. Elizabeth didn't get too see much besides the panic stricken look on both their faces until the jet made it's way over to her.
Quickly figuring out what to do, she dropped to the ground and rolled underneath one of the nearby cars. The sound of shots being fired could be heard right beside her ear as she closed her eyes shut and waited for it to pass.
While she was under the car, she felt a sharp pain all over her body. But she knew it wasn't from herself. She hoped that it wasn't fatal but when she felt a sharp sting right where her heart was she already knew what was going to happen. There was the sound of some more bullets firing in the distance until it stopped for good.
Opening her eyes slowly, Elizabeth got out from under the car and looked around slowly. Behind, she saw Steve and Thor stand up in the same spot as they were before, not looking in too bad shape.
Over on the other end, she saw the Hulk yell out angrily before running past her and jumping up onto the jet. He tore open the door and flung out a very disassembled looking Ultron far enough that he landed on the other side of the city. Not wanting to worry about that now, Elizabeth ran over to where Natasha and Clint would've been.
When the dust settled Elizabeth saw what she could already feel coming. She stood a few feet away from where Natasha sat on the ground with Clint laying beside her. Clint was sprawled out on the ground with too many gunshot wounds on his body for her to count. She could still feel him and concluded that he was still alive, for now.
Elizabeth could feel his pain and decided to take most of it away. She focused on it as she held her tears back and slowly made her way to stand behind Natasha silently. Clint's eyes flicked up to meet hers briefly, giving her a small nod of his head. Elizabeth nodded back with a smile on her face despite her whirlwind of emotions.
"What happened?" Elizabeth asked as Natasha pressed down on one of his many wounds. The blood slowly dripped onto the road below and stained Natasha's pale hands bright red. Clint was dying and it seemed that they all knew it except for Natasha.
"This idiot," Natasha seethed and Elizabeth could hear the tremble in her voice. "Decided that he would cover me, as if he was a fucking shield."
"I am an amazing shield," Clint corrected from his place on the ground as his eyes stared up at the blue sky. "You're still here aren't you, that means I did my job." He looked up to Natasha as the words came out of his mouth slowly. Elizabeth could feel Clint's hold start to slip and his eyes began to slowly gloss over.
"No, no, no." Natasha shook her head from side to side as her eyes began to water. "Come on, Clint." She begged as she continued to press down on his wounds with her hands.
Clint looked up at her sadly as he put his hand on top of hers, stopping her actions at trying to stop the bleeding. "It's okay," he said. Elizabeth could feel how hard he was fighting to stay awake just to spend a few extra minutes with his friend. "I'll be okay."
Natasha tried to keep her tears back as much as she could, not wanting her red and splotchy face to be the last thing he sees. "What about your family?" She asked with her voice breaking off at the end. 'What about me,' she wanted to say. But she couldn't be selfish like that. Not when there were people who needed him more than her. "Don't you wanna see little Nathaniel?"
The man on the ground looked up at her, making sure to keep a smile on his face. "Take care of them for me, yeah?" He asked. Knowing that if he wasn't gonna be there to protect them, there was no one he'd rather have do it than Natasha.
"Yeah, of course." Natasha nodded as she swallowed back the lump in her throat. "I promise," she swore to both herself and him. She took his request to her heart, already sure of what her next mission would be.
"Good," Clint whispered as he took a final look at Natasha. Memorising the face of the person he knew he would do it all over again for. The person who he was glad to give his life up for. "You think I'll see you in Budapest again?"
Sniffling lightly, Natasha nodded. "Duh," she tried to keep her voice even as she saw the colour slowly drain from Clint's face. "Can't get rid of me that easily."
He managed a light laugh despite the circumstances. "Wouldn't dream of it," he muttered with a smile before closing his eyes softly. The erratic rise and fall of his chest stopped as Elizabeth hung her head low.
Seeing that Clint's eyes had closed, Natasha sucked in a deep and shaky breath. "See you in Budapest," she whispered out. She didn't know what to do with herself except sit there next to Clint and just look at him sadly. The reality of his death not fully hitting her yet.
Elizabeth watched from afar with tears in her eyes. When Natasha didn't move from the spot when Elizabeth felt Clint's emotions slowly slip away, she knew she had to interfere. She jogged up to them as she wiped at her eyes.
"Hey," Elizabeth tried carefully as she put a hand on Natasha's shoulder. "We have got to go, we don't have much time left." If she realised Elizabeth was talking to her, she didn't show it.
From behind her, Elizabeth heard Steve approaching them. "Where's Barton, he's not-" he trailed off when he saw what had happened. Elizabeth turned to face him sadly.
"You have to take them to the lifeboats," she told him as she cleared her voice. Not wanting them to hear the tremor when she spoke. "I'm still not done here," she added.
Steve nodded numbly with his eyes on Clint. He didn't move for a second until Elizabeth nudged his foot with hers. His eyes flicked up to hers and she saw they were glossed over with a pained expression behind them. "Okay," he says meekly before making a move to carry Clint's body off the ground.
Lifting Clint off the ground and into his arms, Elizabeth could feel his grief and pain flowing out of him as he looked down at the dead mans face. "Let's go," he said to Natasha who still sat on the floor. Her eyes still trained on the spot where Clint's body had been. "Natasha," Steve said in a stronger voice that got her attention.
Looking up to meet his eyes, Natasha muttered a small 'okay,' before standing up slowly. It was then that Elizabeth realised that if they hadn't pulled Natasha up from the ground, she most likely would've stayed there. She watched as the two made their way towards the lifeboats side by side. She was about to turn around and leave when Natasha called her name.
"Don't die," Natasha told her with a forced smile. "Please," she added softly. "Or I'll take all your stuff," she tried not to let Elizabeth hear the desperation in her voice. Not being able to stand the thought of losing two of her closest friends in one day.
Elizabeth could feel everything Natasha could and it broke her heart. Not only did she have her own sadness, she had hers too. And it was so much that she could feel herself getting a migraine. She pushed all of that aside to smile at the red head. If she wasn't gonna be able to change how she felt, she would have to be able to put on a strong face.
"I won't," Elizabeth promised with a nod. Satisfied with the answer, Natasha and Steve turned back around and carried on their way. Once she saw that the two were safely aboard the lifeboats, Elizabeth turned around and started to sprint in the direction of the church.
***
Thor and Elizabeth got there at the same time. Elizabeth looked at him with a forced smile, deciding not to tell him about Clint until they had the proper time. Before either one of them could step foot into the church the metal body of a half destroyed robot crawled it's way to the core and activated it.
She could feel the way the ground beneath her dropped at the speed most meteors would. The two ran into the church as the rocks and debris around them started to rise up into the air. "On my mark," Tony warned them. Thor raised his hammer to the sky as lighting cracked around the weapon and Elizabeth felt all the heat rush to her hands.
"Ready, and now." Tony gave them the signal. Elizabeth fired what must've been the biggest blast that she had ever done in her entire life, at the same moment that Thor brought his hammer down. There was a loud crash and a ringing in her ears as she watched the ground she stood on crack all over.
The minute he saw that their work here was done, Thor scooped up Elizabeth in one arm before spinning his hammer in the other. He lifted the two of them off the ground just in time for the ground below them to shatter into pieces.
"This superhero stuff is a lot harder than you guys made it look on tv!" Elizabeth yelled in his ear over the loud gush of wind as Thor took them through the air. She recalled back watching the battle of New York on the tv with Sam.
"We were on tv?" Thor asked as he looked for a place for them to land. He saw a small city and decided to head towards it.
She nodded her head at him, "Yeah." When she saw that he had opened his mouth to speak some more she cut him off. "Yes, your hair is fine."
"Thank you, Lady Grace." Thor said and he made a line to a land, the buildings below coming closer into view. Thor was so happy and proud that they had somewhat finished their job that Elizabeth had almost forgotten about the loss of their friend.
"Thor," Elizabeth started as she thought of how to break the news to her friend. Thor looked down at her with a smile that she knew was gonna disappear once the words came out of her mouth. "I got some bad news."
He came down to the ground in the center of a small town. Thor put her to the snow covered ground. "What is it?" He asked with a smile still on his face as he looked around at the small buildings dusted with snow.
"Clint's dead," she decided to just give it to him straight. Thor's eyes slowly dimmed out as she felt his happiness drain from him. It broke her to see him so sad when he was usually the happiest out of all of them. "You okay?"
"All I know is that the gates of Valhalla welcome him," Thor replied with a sure face. "And that we'll see him again soon." Valhalla being the place where all the best heroes go after they die. Thor had told her many stories about the place, and how he one day hoped to go there too.
"You're right," she agreed as they both took a look at the small snow covered town around them. People sent them strange looks as they walked by, not stopping by for more than a few seconds. "I just, his family." Elizabeth found herself struggling for words not knowing what to say.
Thor kept his gaze on the buildings around them, not turning to look at her. "I'll miss him," he says sadly. Suddenly he turns to face her with a pained smile. "Do you think you can cheer me up a bit?"
"Sure thing," Elizabeth said as she tapped into his emotions and concentrated on making his grief and sadness turn into happiness but not to such an extent that he would start to feel weird about it. She gave him just enough for him to be able to smile again.
"Thank you," he thanked her for the second time today. "Um, where exactly are we?" He asked with a confused look at all the signs around them in a foreign language.
"No idea," she mused before walking up to a stranger. "Excuse me," she asked only for them to widen their eyes and brush past her quickly.
On the other side of the street she saw Thor had some better luck with a middle aged lady. Going up to them she got there in time to hear Thor ask the woman where they were.
There were a lot of words that neither of the two understood but Elizabeth managed to catch one word. "Russia," She told the man beside her as he thanked the woman.
"Is that near Sokovia?" Thor asked her. She only shrugged in response, not knowing any more than he did.
"Guys," she called out as she tapped into her earpiece. "Can anyone hear me?" She hoped that someone would answer and explain to them what to do. The two were lost in a foreign country with no money and no transportation. Sure, Thor could fly but she doubted he would make it all the way back to New York. But with her nonetheless.
There was a faint voice over the other end accompanied by some static. After a few more tries the voice of Wanda came in. "Hello?" she asked.
"Ah, great." Elizabeth let out a sigh of relief, her breath turning into small clouds of air in the cold weather. Tony really wasn't kidding when he said it was a heat suit. "Is everyone alright there?"
"Everyone made it out fine," Wanda told her to which both her and Thor smiled lightly, not being able to take another loss. "Where are you guys?"
"Russia," Thor answered to which Wanda let out a confused laugh. "Can you put Stark on the line?"
There was a muffled 'okay,' and the sound of some more chattering before they heard Tony's voice. "If it isn't my two favourite morons that managed to end up in a whole different country," was the first thing he said and the two could hear the sass in his voice.
"Glad to know you're okay too," Elizabeth retorted. "I take it you know about Clint?"
Tony sighed over the line and they could hear the slight shake in his voice. "Yeah," he muttered out in exhaustion. "Romanoff is working on figuring out how to tell his family. She'll most likely do it when we land back in New York."
"Sounds like a good call," she agreed as she kicked a rock across the ground.
"We need a ride," Thor interrupted the silence. "Preferably a fast one," he added with a thumbs up at Elizabeth.
"I'll send a jet to you," Tony said and there was more muffled talking before he came back. "Where are you again?"
"Russia," Thor said somewhat proud at the information they had gotten.
There was the faint sound of laughter over the radio and a 'Cap, you got to hear this!' He came back with laughter evident in his voice. "I'm not gonna ask how you two got that far," he began. "But get to an airport, the jet will pick you up."
Before either of them could say any form of thanks, the line went dead. Elizabeth turned to Thor, "So let's find an airport." They began to ask around, slowly getting frustrated with the lack of English in the small town.
Elizabeth thought that Bucky would be handy right about now, him being able to speak Russian. In fact, she thought, he would be handy in any situation. He made everything ten times better if he was right there with her.
She got all giddy at the thought of finally seeing him again and setting everything straight. All of her feelings and thoughts. But first, they had to find the airport.
Thank You and Sorry
Hii, so I want to say a big big thank you to everyone who read the book at got it to 1k! And I also want to say sorry for what I've done, hehe. I know some of you may not like my choice to kill off Clint but I got a lot planned for Pietro and Wanda.
All the love,
H.
