IT WORKS

Elizabeth walked into the lab with Rhodey to see Nebula and Bruce making some final adjustments on the time travel suit. Scott stood still and Nebula checked over his suit by his side. Rhodey whistled, impressed at the suit as he came to stop beside Nebula.

"The world's first ever time travel suit," Elizabeth commented with a nod at the red and white suit. "Looks good."

Scott nodded before looking at what Bruce held in his hands. "Hey, easy there," Scott warned Bruce who went to place a red vial in its place inside the suit.

"I'm being very careful," Bruce reassured as he bent down slightly just for Scott to grab the vial out of his large hand. Scott looked at the vial, making sure nothing was wrong with it.

"You're not, you're being very Hulk-y" Scott stated as he cradled the vial as if his sole purpose in life was to protect it. "These are Pym Particles, and ever since Hank Pym got snapped out of existence this is it. This is what we have, we're not making any more." Scott lifted the vial in his hand and looked at all of them in the room, making sure they all got his memo.

Rhodey held both his hands out at Scott with an understanding expression. "We get it, okay? Now calm down," Rhodey instructed as Elizabeth and Nebula nodded in agreement.

Scott sighed and nodded with his head bowed. "Right, sorry," he apologised to them all. "We only have enough for one round trip each. That's it, no do-overs," he informed them before he remembered something. "Plus, two test runs," he added.

He placed the vial in his suit and almost immediately shrunk in size with a short yell. Scott reappeared in his normal size and pressed his lips together as his helmet opened. "One test drive," he retracted his statement and avoided Nebula and Rhodey's disappointed gaze.

Wringing his hands out, Scott bounced back and forth from one foot to the other nervously. "Alright," he began confidently with a nod that quickly turned into a shake of his head. "Yeah, no. I'm not ready for this."

"I'll do it," a voice said by the entrance to the lab.

They all turned to see Pietro standing there in his usual attire of running pants and a plain t-shirt. Wanda stood beside him in jeans and a long sleeved shirt. Bruce looked at Pietro for a minute as they all awaited his answer. Pietro raised an eyebrow, getting impatient quickly.

Bruce had opened his mouth to speak but got distracted when Thor pushed his way in the room between the twins, a can of beer in his hand and sunglasses covering his eyes despite it being indoors.

Wanda glared at him silently as he brushed past her shoulder, probably still not over the last time the two had spoken. Thor on the other hand looked as if he couldn't even remember the last time the two had encountered.

"Why can't I do it?" Thor slurred with one hand in the pocket of his stained cardigan. He came to stand in front of Bruce as he pushed up his sunglasses to rest on top of his head. He scratched his chin under his long beard that could even give Gandalf a run for his money.

Putting one hand one each of Thor's shoulders, Bruce looked at him sympathetically. "We haven't made a suit for your, physique yet." Bruce chose his words carefully as he gave Thor a once over, his eyes resting  on his extra layer of skin a second too long. "Tony and I are only halfway in making the rest of the team's suits. Plus, Scott and Pietro are practically the same size."

"But I am taller,"  Scott piped up quickly as he began to take off the suit. Pietro rolled his eyes at the comment, muttering under his breath. Something about Scott being an ant compared to him.

Elizabeth saw as Thor looked away from the two before putting his sunglasses back on. She sighed when he walked past her and out of the room silently. She smiled curtly at the rest of the team in the room before following Thor out of the lab.

She ran to catch up with his long strides, pushing the sleeves of her shirt up to her elbows. "Thor!" She tried calling him as he dropped his now empty can of beer into the trash can by the living room.

He turned around and sent her a smile. "Hey," he said to her but he looked around the place as he spoke, clearly in search of something. "Where is the kitchen again? It's been a while," Thor told her, obviously looking for some other drink to occupy his hand.

Ponting behind her she showed him the direction to the kitchen. "It's over there-" Thor didn't wait for her to finish speaking before walking past her, giving Elizabeth a small pat on the back and a thanks. His harsh pat made her stumble slightly as she went to walk with him, not getting to talk about what she wanted to ask him.

"How've you been?" Elizabeth asked him as he made his way down the halls, stopping only when he didn't know which way to go. He looked at her expectantly, waiting for directions.

Thor followed after her as she turned a corner, leading him to the kitchen. "I am quite alright," Thor said with a smile, the sunglasses hiding his sad eyes from her. But she always knew better than to trust what people said.

"You feeling okay?" She asked even though she already knew the answer. It wasn't just Thor's appearance that Elizabeth saw had changed since she last saw him. He also felt different, sadder, she noticed when she first said hello to him after five years.

As they entered the kitchen, Thor opened the refrigerator with a frown, only seeing a couple cartons of milk and a half opened can of soda. He grabbed the drink in one hand and turned to Elizabeth who leaned by the counter.

He took a big gulp of the drink before answering her. "I'm fine," he lied before setting the can down on the counter. "See," he pointed to his mouth that was turned up in a smile, thankful for his sunglasses.

"Listen, I know how you feel," Elizabeth tried once again. "And it's a pretty shitty feeling so-"

"If I needed your help I would ask for it," Thor told her calmly as he held on tightly to the can in his hand, careful not to crush it. He was lying again and they both knew it. "I am okay."

Elizabeth shook her head slightly, still not believing him. How could she believe him when she could feel everything he was feeling. But she decided not to push him, there was nothing to offer someone who did not want your help.

There was the soft sound of footsteps coming from the hall and Steve appeared there, looking at both Thor and Elizabeth. He leaned against the wall as he spoke to the two. "Pietro is ready," he informed them. "We're going to do it in the hangar," he tilted his head to ask them to follow him.

Pushing herself off the counter, Elizabeth followed Steve out of the room. She looked back at Thor to see her friend throw the crushed can into the trash can before following them.

"Alright, Pietro." Elizabeth heard Bruce say as she walked in with Steve and Thor. Tony and Natasha stood on either side of Bruce. Rhodey by Tony's side as usual.

Pietro stood in the center of a raised platform that Tony and Rocket had built within two days. Above him were a bunch of metals and wires that Tony had told her the name and use for but she couldn't have been bothered to remember.

Elizabeth stood beside Nebula, giving her a small smile before turning to face the platform with her hands clasped in front of her. Rocket came to stand in front of her as he flipped a wrench in his hand back and forth.

"We're going in," Bruce announced to Pietro who activated his helmet  before looking down at where he stood. "In three, two, one." Bruce counted down and the floor beneath Pietro lit up. Elizabeth watched as Pietro shrunk down and was sucked under, gone in a flash.

It was silent and Elizabeth played with her fingers nervously as she glanced at Bruce, seeing him count up to ten under his breath. All of them watched as he reached ten and pressed the button to bring Pietro back to them.

There was another flash of light from the platform and Pietro appeared on the ground, sitting on his knees. His helmet retracted into the suit and he looked around the room with a dazed look in his eyes.

Wanda was the first one to run up to him and the rest of them followed suit. She knelt in front of her brother and patted the side of his face, bringing his attention to her. The rest of them gave the two some space as they hang back.

"Are you okay?" Wanda asked her brother worriedly as she looked at his face closely.

Pietro didn't answer her at first. He placed something in Wanda's hand carefully and Elizabeth saw that it was a video tape that read 'The Dick Van Dyke Show' on the cover. Wanda froze as she looked down at the item in her hand.

She turned it over with shaky hands and Elizabeth felt a stab of sadness from her. But Pietro felt somewhat happy as he looked at his sister, taking her shaking hand in his. The action made Wanda look at Pietro in disbelief.

"I saw mama and papa," he tells Wanda in between his heavy breaths from his place on the floor. Wanda helped him up with one hand, the other still holding on tightly to the video tape. She didn't say anything as Pietro spoke to the rest of them. "It works," he breathed out with a nod and she felt nothing but hope from the rest of them. Something that they all hadn't felt in a long time.
