IF SHE COULD DO IT ONCE, SHE COULD DO IT AGAIN

"It's been twenty three days since Thanos came to earth," Rhodey sighed out as he looked up at the holographic screens above the wooden table in the center of the room. He stood beside Tony who sat in a wheelchair with an IV hooked up to him.

Tony looked so different from when they'd all last seen him. He was thin and pale with stubble growing out, which was unlike him. He raised a shaking hand to rub at his forehead and push his sunglasses up the bridge of his nose.

Elizabeth leaned against the small desk pushed up against the side of the room. Rocket sat under the desk beside her feet, as the two of them stared silently at the faces of their fallen friends.

Their faces flashed up on the small square screens, followed by their name and biological details. The only thing they all had in common was their date of death. All exactly the same, right down to their time of death.

When Bucky's face came up right beside Sam's she had to turn her face to the side, letting her dark hair obscure her view. She waited till their faces were gone before turning back to face the front.

"World governments are in pieces," Natasha said across from Steve who stared with a stoic look at all of the faces on the holographic screen. "The parts that are still working are trying to take a census and it looks like he did exactly what he said he would."

Out of the corner of her eye, Elizabeth saw Tony put his face in his hands at the sight of a young boy among the faces of the dead. Peter Parker, the name read. Only sixteen, his age stated. The number most likely going to stay the same forever.

Natasha took a deep breath as she looked around at all the faces in the room, some new and some old. "Thanos wiped out fifty percent of all living creatures."

Carol Danvers stared at a picture of Nick Fury with tears in her eyes. Her long blonde hair resting on her shoulders perfectly as Elizabeth saw her clench her jaw tightly. Her eyes moving to Tony as he spoke up from his seat.

"Where is he now?" Tony asked as he looked directly at Steve for the first time since he had got here.

Steve shifted his weight from one foot to the other, slightly uncomfortable with the way Tony was staring at him so intensely. "We don't know," he answered. "He just opened a portal and walked through."

Tony wheeled his chair back and forth lightly, only stopping when he caught sight of Thor sitting alone on the other side of the glass wall. "What's wrong with him?" Tony pointed a finger in Thor's direction with a tilted head.

"He's pissed," Elizabeth answered as she felt the never ending anger brewing inside of Thor. "He thinks he failed," she added when Tony raised an eyebrow at her words, asking for more information.

Looking down, she saw Rocket shrug at her words. "Which of course he did," he commented with his eye on the ground before bringing them up to look at Tony. "But you know, there's a lot of that going around, ain't there?"

With his mouth hung open, Tony squinted at Rocket in awe. "Honestly, up until this exact moment I thought you were a build-a-bear."

"Maybe I am," Rocket mumbled as he looked down at his hands with a blank stare.

"We've been hunting Thanos for three weeks now," Steve veered the conversation back on track. "Deep space scans, satellites and not to mention Wanda's never ending search. But we've got nothing." Steve sighed as he remembered how Wanda eventually gave up on looking for Vision but turned her sights on Thanos.

Elizabeth took a step forward to Tony. "Tony, you fought him," she began but stopped herself when Tony held a finger up, wanting to interject.

"Who told you that?" He asked, clearly not expecting an answer. "No, I didn't fight him. He wiped my face with a planet while the Bleeker Street magician gave away the stone," He corrected bitterly. "That's what happened. There was no fight cause he's unbeatable."

"Did he give you any clues, any coordinates?" Steve asked, seeing what Elizabeth was getting at.

"I saw this coming a few years back," Tony said as if Steve's question went in one ear and went out the other. "I had a vision but I didn't wanna believe it." He shook his head from side to side, his eyes reliving the memory.

Steve sighed before pushing himself off a bookcase and walking over to the wooden table. "Tony, I'm gonna need you to focus."

"And I needed you. As in past tense." Tony met Steve's gaze with a look of betrayal, his fists clenched by the armrest on his wheelchair. "And that trumps what you need, it's too late buddy. Sorry," he said with mock pity.

Elizabeth saw the heavy rise and fall of his chest through the robe he wore as he stretched his neck out. "You know what I need?" Tony stood up from the wheelchair. His hand reached out as he knocked over an empty bowl, the dish falling to the floor in pieces. "I need to shave," he answered his own question.

Tony took a step forward only to be held back by the IV tube in his arm. He looked down at it in annoyance before ripping it out of his skin, throwing it to the ground angrily. Rhodey shook his head at his best friend and reached out to put the IV tube back in only for Tony to wrench himself out of his grasp.

"And I remember telling all of you that what we needed was a suit of armour around the world. Remember that?" He acknowledged all of them in the room with a hard glare, his voice rising at the end of his sentence. "Whether that impacted our precious freedom or not. That's what we needed."

"Well that didn't work out did it?" Steve kept a steady gaze on Tony as the shorter man took a step forward.

"I said we'd lose, and you said, we'll do that together too." Elizabeth felt the memories return to her at the words, watching as Tony pointed a finger accusingly to Steve's chest. "Well guess what Cap? We lost and you weren't there." Tony spat his last words out with as much venom as possible, satisfied when he saw Steve's face fall.

"You're great by the way," Tony pointed at Carol as she cocked an eyebrow at him. "We need you, you're new blood," he explained as he struggled against Rhodey once more.

Rhodey turned to look at Elizabeth with a grimace on his face. She met his eyes and he nodded at her, already sure that she knew the question he was asking. She nodded her head subtly at him before turning her attention on Tony, working on calming him down.

His eyes grew heavy and Elizabeth felt him fight back against the slumber she was putting on him, desperate to make one last point. "I've got nothing for you, Cap." Tony pushed his way to stand inches away from Steve's face, having to crane his neck to look up at the man. "No clues, no coordinates. Zero, zip, nada. And I've got no trust for you either, liar."

In one final act of defiance, Tony reached up to his chest and ripped his arc reactor off. He grabbed Steve's hand and shoved it into his open palm. "Here, you take this," Tony said as Steve stared down at the piece of metal in his hand with a shocked expression. "You find him and you put that on. Then you hide."

Breathing heavily, Tony turned to look back at Elizabeth with a dazed look. "Okay," he began with a nod. "I'm ready for bed now," he mumbled right before collapsing into the open arms of Rhodey.

The rest of them watched as Rhodey carefully placed his friend back in the wheelchair before wheeling him away, calling Bruce for some help as he walked out of the room. Steve slumped into a nearby chair with his head in his hands as Natasha rubbed his back comfortingly.

Suddenly, the projections above the table shut off. The faces all disappearing quickly. Elizabeth felt as if she was missing someone, so she quickly ran through all of the faces she saw on the screens. Her heart aching as she passed Sam, Bucky and her brothers. But she saw that she was right when there was a face missing amongst them.

"Was that everyone?" Her clear voice startled them in the silence, all of them looking at her in confusion.

"What?" Carol questioned as she looked around the room, trying to figure out what she was talking about.

Elizabeth walked towards the table before placing both her hands on it, leaning forward slightly. "Those pictures," she started. "Was that everyone who got snapped away? Everyone who died?" She hesitated at her last words, frowning as they exited her mouth.

"I guess," Natasha answered as she stood up straight. "Not everyone in the world if that's what you mean. Just anyone we've been in contact with, even briefly."

That was all she needed to hear before darting out of the room. She heard her name being called after her but she didn't stop running until she had reached her room on the other side of the compound. She nearly bumped into Wanda and Pietro as she took a sharp left into her room.

She breathed heavily from the run as she rummaged through her room until she found her cellphone. The item left untouched with a layer of dust covering as it sat under her bed. She hadn't had a need for it, there was no one left to call. Until now, that is.

Searching through her contacts, she stopped until she saw the foreign number, hoping that the person on the other end of the line would pick up. Elizabeth pressed the phone to her ear with her eyes squeezed shut as she stood in the center of the room.

"Hello?" She heard a sweet voice pick up and she nearly cried in relief. "Is anyone there?" The voice repeated and Elizabeth was so caught up in her joy that she forgot to answer.

"Emilie!" Elizabeth exclaimed with a relieved sigh at the voice laced with a French accent. This was probably the first time she had properly smile since that horrible day in Wakanda. "You're okay!"

"Elizabeth!" The voice over the other end said happily. "I am so happy to hear from you! Things have been horrible. I have been trying to reach Luke for the past weeks, is he with you?"

Elizabeth's happiness was just a quickly wiped away at the question. She still didn't know, Elizabeth thought sadly as she cleared her throat. "Um, no," she answered hesitantly, unsure how to break it to her.

"Oh," Emilie said before it went quiet again. "Is he- is he gone?" She asked and Elizabeth heard the plea in her voice, begging Elizabeth to tell her no. At this point, Elizabeth was glad they were having the conversation over the phone. Selfishly glad that she wouldn't have to feel Emilie's heartbreak.

"Yeah," she replied with her eyes shut when she heard the loud agonizing cry on the other end of the line. Elizabeth heard the pain in her cries and heard as the phone dropped to the floor. She waited for a few minutes letting Emilie let it all out of her system, even though she knew that you could never run out of this kind of cries.

There was some rustling over the phone and Elizabeth assumed that the phone was back with Emilie. "I need you to come over here, to the compound," Elizabeth invited her over, not wanting her to be alone. Besides, they had space, that was one thing they had a lot of. "I'll send you the proper address and-"

"You are going to fix it, right?" Emilie cut her off as she stifled her cries, hiccupping in result. "You are gong to bring him back?"

She couldn't promise that, she knew it. That would make her a hypocrite, since she was the one who told Steve not to make promises you can't keep. "We're trying," she gave an answer, being able to rest in knowing that it wasn't a lie. "I'm sorry I didn't call sooner," Elizabeth apolosgised at her lack of haste.

"I just assumed that," Elizabeth trailed off, not feeling right in finishing her sentence. "Just come here right away," she changed the topic. "If you need a plane, I can get the jet to-"

"No," Emilie stopped her. "We will be there soon."

Without any goodbye, Elizabeth heard the dial tone. Pulling the phone away from her ear, she tossed it onto the bed carelessly. Her eyebrows pulled together at the last thing Emilie had said to her. We will be there soon.

As she wondered what that meant, there was a gust of wind and Pietro appeared beside her. She looked at what he was wearing and looked at him questioningly.

Gesturing to his suit and coy grin, she asked him a question. "What's going on?"

"We know where Thanos is," he answered. "The blue lady helped us find him." She guessed he was talking about Nebula. Thanos' adopted daughter turned good that came back from space with.

"We go to him, then what?" Elizabeth asked, clearly missing out on a lot in the short phone call she had made.

Wanda appeared in the doorway with a determined expression on her face. She zipped up the red leather jacket she had on with a determined expression. "We make him tell us where Vision is," she says. "Then we kill him."

"What she said," Pietro tilted his head at his sister with a proud smile thrown her way.

Wanda nodded at the two of them. "Now get your asses on the jet," she instructed before walking away, Pietro following after her.

Looking around the empty room, Elizabeth closed the door before she made her way to her wardrobe. The large doors opening easily. She took her suit out from its shelf and threw it onto her bed, landing next to her phone.

Getting changed, she shook away all thoughts of what might happen to them once they go up against the titan a second time. If she died, so be it. But if the rest of the team died, the only people she had left. She would be left alone once more just like when she was seventeen.

She rolled her shoulders back as her hand rested on the cool metal of the door handle. If she could do it once, she could do it again. She didn't believe herself as she walked out of the room.
