GET ME MY CAT

"Okay, I think he's had enough sleep now." Sam stood in between Elizabeth and Steve, both who watched over a sleeping Bucky.

The four of them were in an abandoned warehouse somewhere in the outskirts of Berlin. After Steve had apprehended Bucky from the helicopter that he tried to use to escape, Sam and Elizabeth had found -or stolen- a car and the four of them squeezed inside. They drove around aimlessly until they found a place that looked safe enough for them.

That was two hours ago. Steve sighed at Sam's glare at the sleeping man with a shake of his head. "I guess you're right," he said before giving Elizabeth the cue to wake him up.

She walked over to Bucky slowly and knelt down beside him where he was slumped against a pile of crates. His metal arm was chained up with a metal pole, it was a pathetic effort by Sam and Steve to ensure he didn't escape but it was an effort nonetheless. Besides, Elizabeth knew when he'd wake up he would be himself again. She could feel his emotions.

Concentrating hard, she used her abilities and woke Bucky up. At first she thought it wasn't working but then there was a soft groan coming from his mouth. Bucky blinked rapidly with his head still hung low, his hair covering most of his face.

"Steve?" He questioned once he caught eyes of the blond standing a few feet away from him. Bucky having to gaze up to see his face clearly.

Crossing his arms, Steve stared Bucky down with a wary glance. "Which Bucky am I talking to?" He asked carefully.

"It's fine, Steve." Elizabeth spoke up from beside Bucky, bringing his attention to her. He didn't even realise that she was next to him. When he caught sight of her he let out a relived sigh.

Steve was about to protest, saying that they could never be too sure. But he stopped when he saw the way Bucky leaned his forehead against Elizabeth's flannel covered shoulder. He decided to keep his mouth shut and let the two have their moment.

"You okay?" Bucky asked her softly before reaching up to give her a light kiss on the lips, very much aware of the pair of dark eyes watching them closely. Elizabeth put her hand over his as she nodded, reassuring him. "Where's Alpine?"

"I'm not sure," she told him honestly as she brushed back some dark hair away from his handsome face. "They're probably keeping her back at the building." Elizabeth frowned as she thought of how they were going back to get the feline.

Sam cleared his throat, getting all three of their attention. "Um, who exactly is Alpine?" He asked in confusion as Steve nodded along, wanting to know the answer to the question.

"Our cat," Elizabeth answered for the both of them when she saw Bucky's gaze trail back to the floor. His eyes darting back and forth as he tried to recall what had happened to lead the four of them here.

Coming up empty, he knew it could only mean one thing. "What did I do?" He asked Elizabeth quietly, feeling safest with her.

"Enough," Steve chimed in before taking a step toward the two. He looked at his best friend since childhood with pity in his eyes.

"I knew this would happen," Bucky murmured disappointedly. "Everything hydra put inside me is still there. All he had to do is say the goddamn words."

Elizabeth worked on untying the chain around his metal arm as Sam spoke, not bothering to ask anyone if it was alright. "Who was he?" He asked, hoping to get an answer out of Bucky.

"I don't know," Bucky said. His memory may have been hazy but he knew he would remember a face like that.

"People are dead," Steve stated bluntly. "The bombing, the setup, the doctor did all that just to get ten minutes with you. I need you to do better than 'I don't know,'" he said sternly.

Elizabeth sent a warning glare at him upon his last words. "Steve," she chided, not liking the tone of his voice.

Bucky placed his hand on her leg, saying that it was okay. "He wanted to know about Siberia," he answered Steve  after a moment of silence. "Where I was kept, he wanted to know exactly where."

"Why?" Sam questioned as Elizabeth lifted the chain off Bucky's metal arm. The action making Sam take a protective step toward the two.

"Because I'm not the only Winter Soldier," Bucky responded hesitantly with his eyes shut. Elizabeth stood up before extending a hand to help him up. She brought down two crates from the stack behind them and set it down for the two of them to sit on.

"Who were they?" Steve asked as he leaned against the cold  concrete wall. Elizabeth kept quiet as they all spoke, listening attentively. Bucky never told her all this but she was sure there was a good reason behind it.

"The most elite death squad," Bucky said with a heavy sigh before taking a seat beside her. "They had more kills than anyone in HDYRA history, and that was before the serum."

Sam shook his head as if not believing him. "They all turn out like you?" He said somewhat insultingly.

"Worse," Bucky played along with Sam's tone as she smiled slightly at the two of them. Already knowing that she was going to be so entertained whenever they were around.

"The doctor," Steve began with a thoughtful look on his face. "Could he control them?"

Looking off with a frown, he put an arm around Elizabeth's shoulders as he thought of what they could do. "He could control them enough."

"He said he wanted to see an empire fall," Elizabeth chimed in as she remembered the words the doctor had said to Steve.

Nodding his head, Bucky understood why the doctor wanted to go to Siberia now. "With these guys he could do it," he told all three of them. "They speak thirty languages, can hide in plain sight, infiltrate, assassinate, destabilize. They could take a whole country down in one night and no one would see it coming."

The uncomfortable silence that hung in the air was interrupted by the sound of a phone ringing. Elizabeth looked to the source of the sound to see Sam reaching into his pocket, how he still had his phone, she had no idea. He looked between her and Steve before picking it up and walking out of the room.

"We should call Tony," Steve spoke up over the sound of some muffled talking in the other room. If they were right, this wasn't something meant for two or three people, they'd need all the help they could get

She shook her head at him as he made his way over to the two of them. "He won't believe us. Even if he did, the accords would probably prevent him from helping us." She exhaled before placing her head in her hands, wondering who they could turn to for any form of help. She felt Bucky rub his hand up and down her back silently, making her turn to look at him with a smile.

"Guess we're on our own," Steve said dejectedly before shoving his hands inside his pockets.

"I believe that you're forgetting Tweedle-Dum and Tweedle-Dee," Elizabeth reminded him of Pietro and Wanda with a encouraging smile. She wanted to try and remove whatever stress she could feel from him. "Plus I remember Sam telling me a story about some Tic-Tac."

"A what?" Steve tilted his head to the side, not understanding what she was trying to say. Bucky on the other hand stifled a laugh as he remembered Elizabeth telling him the story of how Sam got his ass handed to him by an ant.

She had opened her mouth to explain when she heard her name being called. Sam walked into the room with his phone in hand as he avoided her gaze, making her narrow her eyes at him suspiciously. "It's for you," he held the phone out to her with a grimace.

Standing up from the crate, she looked Sam up and down to see whether he was joking or not. But she could feel his anxiousness roll off him in waves. Leaning down, she kissed Bucky on the cheek muttering a quiet, 'I'll be back,' before making her way over to Sam.

"Who is it?" She asked him in concern when he still didn't meet her eyes. "Sam?"

He thrusted the phone out to her once more with a tilt of his head into the room next door. "Just take the phone," he said lowly.

Reluctantly, Elizabeth took the phone from him and made her way into the other room. This room looked identical to the other one, with crates stacked in one end and abandoned tables and chairs. The only difference was that this one had a large square in the wall, letting the cold air inside.

Once she was sure that no one could hear her, she pressed the phone to her ear. "Who is this?"

"Don't hang up." Her shoulders tensed as she recognised the sound of her brothers voice. "Please, I need to talk to you," Leo said over the phone, his voice was muffled and had some static to it.

Clenching her jaw tightly, she let out an annoyed huff of air. "How did you get this number?" She snapped, giving him a chance by not hanging up the phone right then and there. Elizabeth realised that she may or may not have been just a tad bit too harsh on them the last time.

"You forget that I went to MIT," Leo reminded her as she rolled her eyes. Back when they were still a family, he'd never let her forget how he went to the school. "I could call the FBI if I really wanted too."

"What do you want?"

"We heard about what happened, Stark is supposed to bring you and your friends in." It was so weird to her to have him say all of this as if they were all one big happy group. "Why don't you sit this one out and come with us?"

She scoffed at his words. "We?" She repeated his words. "I don't hear our dear big brother anywhere there, too busy with his wife I suppose." Every word she spoke was laced with venom, making Leo cringe.

"Don't be like that," Leo chided over the phone. "Emilie is nice, you'll see once you come back with us."

"I'm not coming back with you," Elizabeth said each word slowly, making sure he got the message. "Unlike you, I don't abandon people when things get tough."

"I deserved that," he muttered quietly, making it hard to hear. It was quiet for a moment and she readjusted the phone in her hand before pressing it against her ear. "This won't end well for anyone. We don't want to see you hurt, we just wanna protect you."

She let out a laugh once he was done speaking, not believing the words coming out of his mouth. "I am not a child anymore," she said through her gritted teeth. "I may have needed you back when I was seventeen but I sure as hell don't need you now."

"And as for the 'we' you keep speaking of," She made air quotes with her free hand around the word, forgetting that he couldn't see her. "Is Luke even in the room with you?" When there was no reply she got her answer. "If he really cared he would have at least been there with you, but no. He doesn't change, Leo. I've accepted it and maybe you should too."

She made a move to hang up the phone but stopped when she heard him tell her to wait. "I'm sorry, okay?" Apologising was something she never thought she'd hear from either of them but here it was. "I'm sorry that we left and that it took so long to find you. Is there anything I can do to make it up to you?" He didn't have to be standing right in front of her to know he meant it.

His words make it slightly less painful to talk to him but she would never admit it. But she wasn't going to pass up this opportunity. "Get me my cat," she answered his question seriously.

"A cat?" He repeated incredulously, not sure if she was messing with him or not. "Usually people would say money or stuff like that. But a cat?"

"Not just any cat, my cat," she said, feeling more and more sure of her request. Besides, she was sure Bucky would be happy to see Alpine again.

"I don't even know what this thing looks like," Leo said. "There's thousands of cats in the world. How am I supposed to find yours?"

"You went to MIT," she smirked as she threw his words back in his face. "Figure it out." Without waiting for a response, she hung up the phone. Feeling slightly better than she did before. Leaving Alpine to the hands of her brother wasn't exactly ideal but it was better than the animal staying in some large building surrounded by men with badges.

Elizabeth walked back into the other room as she tossed the phone from one hand to the other. All three pair of eyes looked at her curiously as she handed the phone back to Sam wordlessly. She sat down beside Bucky and his hand instantly went around her waist.

"Who was that?" Bucky asked softly as he leaned in for a kiss.

Smiling into the kiss, she pulled away and looked up at him. "Just some family problems," she told him with a shrug. Elizabeth turned to Sam and Steve who talked amongst themselves. "So what's the plan?"

"First we gotta get out stuff back," Steve explained the plan step by step as they all listened carefully. Halfway through explaining, Sam raised his hand up silently. Steve sighed, all too familiar with Sam to know what was coming next. "Yes, Sam?" He asked the man exasperatedly.

"Are we taking the car?" Sam lowered his hand slowly as Steve nodded. "I call shotgun then," He added suddenly causing Elizabeth to roll her eyes at his triumphant grin, mentally reminding herself not to sit behind him.
