FORTY FIRST FLOOR

Elizabeth walked between Sam and Steve as the three made their way toward the edge of the helicarrier. They were walking as if they had all the time in the world. Which in fact they did not.

"Sometimes when I feel like I'm being too reckless," Elizabeth started out loud as she made conversation. "I think about Steve and I remind myself at least I'm not that reckless."

Sam let out a loud laugh at Steve's offended face. "Hey!" He protested with a scowl.

"She's got a point," Sam agreed with a smile on his face.

They were nearing the edge of the helicarrier when Agent Hill's voice came in through their earpieces.

"I hate to interrupt your little chat," she said as the three paused by the edge. The city below them was barely visible through the thick clouds in the air. "But if you could pick up the pace, that'd be great," Maria added sarcastically.

"Right," Steve agreed as he gripped his shield tighter in one hand. Mentally preparing himself for the ride that Elizabeth so dramatically described as 'The flight of death.'

Sam smirked at Steve's distressed state. "Is Captain America afraid of flying?" He teased with a smirk.

"Please," he scoffed with a roll of his eyes. "I am the man who jumped out of a plane with no parachute."

"That's not a flex," Sam corrected with a laugh.

Maria Hill grumbled over the radio. "Boys," she chided. As the two muttered out a quick sorry.

Sam turned to Elizabeth, "You gonna be okay here?"

"Relax," she told Sam. "I'll get one of the agents to give me a ride down, maybe I can help Natasha out."

"Which would be helpful but not exactly necessary," Natasha's voice suddenly rang though their ears. "Everything is according to plan."

"We'll you're getting my help anyways," Elizabeth muttered while she watched Sam take a tight hold of Steve.

Sam was about to jump off the platform, his wings extended, when an explosion rang out from behind them.

Looking back, Elizabeth saw none other than the Winter Soldier making his way toward them with a rocket launcher in hand. He fired toward one of the three remaining planes as the pilots and agents scrambled to get out.

He was dressed just as she had last seen him on the bridge. All black tactical gear with his long hair messily scattered across his forehead. The only difference was that he didn't have the mask on like last time. HYDRA most likely decided that it had defeated it's purpose since they all knew who he was now.

"There goes my ride," Elizabeth muttered distastefully before turning toward Sam and Steve. "You guys go, I'll buy you some time."

Steve looked at her with hesitation in his eyes. "You sure?"

"I'm not gonna offer a second time," She added before the two made their way to the last helicarrier across from them. Sam grabbing Steve by the shoulders before extending his wings and taking off

She turned around only to be met with a hard kick to her stomach. Elizabeth felt the wind get knocked out of her as she fell to the ground, nearly getting thrown off the platform.

Rolling out of the way as a metal fist crushed the place where her head had been moments ago. She looked up to see the face of Bucky Barnes staring back at her. His blue eyes void of all emotion as usual.

Quickly getting up, she sent a punch his way which he blocked with his arm. In return, he sent a punch to her jaw that she deflected by ducking to the left.

The whirring of his metallic arm filled her ears as she deflected every punch he sent her way. All the while she tried once more to control his emotions but just as before, it was no use.

Sending a kick to his chest, he stumbled back slightly. Elizabeth felt her hands heat up before sending a quick blast of energy his way.

Bucky Barnes flew back a few feet as he felt his back hit some scattered crates. The wood gave way under him with a loud 'snap'. Frustrated at how this tiny person was beating him, he got back up with anger evident in his eyes.

The next time Elizabeth tried to blast him he sidestepped it with ease. Every time she tried to hit him with her powers he'd manage to avoid it.

Before she knew it he was a few feet away from her with his knife out. He thrusted at her with the weapon as she took a step back to avoid getting stabbed.

As fast as she could, Elizabeth grabbed her knife from its place on her belt. She tried to find any opening she could to stab at him but it was no use. Every thrust she made, he deflected with his metal appendage. It was what felt like the longest five minutes of her life. It was non stop parrying and taking whatever chance she had back and forth.

Until finally, Bucky Barnes managed to sink his knife into the flesh of her shoulder. Elizabeth gasped in pain when the knife lodged itself into her.

She stumbled back as she felt warm and wet blood streaming down her shoulder. Knowing better than to take out the knife, she let it be. The clothes that she wore quickly stained red.

Bucky Barnes was distracted by his swift victory that he didn't notice Elizabeth's hand charging up and sending a blast to his chest.

For the second time that afternoon, he went flying backwards. This time into the side of a fighter jet. Instead of getting up and fighting her back he just sent her one blank stare before climbing into the pilot seat of the jet. Remembering that his mission was the Captain, not her.

Realising what he was doing Elizabeth chased after him. Knowing that she'd never reach him in time, she fired a blast of energy towards the jet. It met it's home in one of the engines. However, the sparks and thick black smoke didn't seem to stop him. It was as if nothing mattered to him, not even his own survival, unless he completed his mission.

The plane went down just in time for Bucky Barnes to jump out and land on the platform on the last helicarrier. She watched from afar as he grabbed what looked like the blurry outline of Sam's figure before tearing one of his wings in half. Steve was no where to be seen so she had to assume that he was already inside. The next thing she knew, the assassin threw Sam down to the ground before shoving him off the edge of the platform.

Elizabeth's heart sank as she watched it all play out before her eyes, nothing she could do to stop it. "Sam?" she questioned shakily through the radio, hoping and praying that he'd answer her. There was some static but no reply. "Sam?" she repeated with a lump in her throat.

"Is that concern I hear in that voice of yours?" His voice finally rang through as Elizabeth let out a sigh of relief.

Unbeknownst to her she had a smile of relief on her face as she spoke, happy that she didn't lose another brother. "You okay bird boy?"

"I'm fine," he answered. "Just grounded for now. Sorry, Cap."

Remembering the assassin, she spoke to Steve. "By the way, your old war pal is paying you a visit," she informed grimly. The pain in her shouder intensified

Steve's response cut through the radio. "Yeah a bit late for that," he commented as there was the sound of punches and grunts of pain on the other end.

"Just hold on," she told him, "I'll get there soon."

"No," Steve quickly protested. "I'm fine, he's my friend. I can get through to him."

Elizabeth shook her head even though he couldn't see her, "No, Steve-"

"I've got this," He tried convincing her between heavy breaths. "I can do this all day."

"Is that like your trademark or something?" Elizabeth remarked. "I've got to help somehow. I can't just sit here and do nothing."

A new voice rang through the radio suddenly. "Well then, Miss Grace." Director Fury announced and the smirk was evident in his voice. "I have just the thing for you. The chopper will be there for you shortly. Till then, just hang tight."

"Where are you?" Elizabeth asked Sam through the earpiece. She was currently sat in the backseat of the chopper, the blood from her shoulder slowly leaking onto the leather seats. Nick Fury sat in the pilots seat with Natasha sat beside him. Alexander Pierce had been taken care of according to the two.

Now on they were on their way to rescue Sam from the collapsing building. He had called them in, saying he needed a ride before the building caved with him inside. They hadn't gotten any word from Steve since he and Elizabeth had last spoken, besides two words "Charlie Locked."

Which then led to the three helicarriers targeting each other. They literally fell out of the sky, pieces of shrapnel and metal falling down to the ground below. All they could do was hope Steve was okay.

"Forty first floor, northwest corner!" Sam yelled his reply as they neared his building. The whirring of the helicopter blades making it hard for them to hear.

"Alright!" Natasha raised her voice. "Stay where you are!"

"Not an option!"

They neared the side of the building just as Sam jumped out from the window. They looked up just in time for Natasha to flip the chopper on it's side. Sam passed through the doors and nearly slipped out if it weren't for Elizabeth grabbing onto his arm.

"Forty first floor!" He yelled in annoyance over the loud noise. "You guys were on like the thirty first!"

Fury turned in his seat as the chopper straightened upright again. "Does it look like they put the numbers on the outside of the buildings? No!" He answered his own question.

"Any word on Steve?" Sam asked as the three shook their head.

Natasha turned to look at the two. "Agent Hill said the only place he could be is in the river." The red heads face showing how worried she was despite how hard she tried to hide it.

The worry from everyone else in the helicopter got to her, giving her a slight headache." Well let's go fishing then," Elizabeth muttered as she hoped Steve was alive and breathing.
