AVENGERS ASSEMBLE

It was dark and Elizabeth felt like she couldn't breathe. She gave her eyes a couple of seconds to adjust to the dim lighting from the red emergency lights on what was left of the Avengers Compound.

It was only when she made a move to sit up that she realised the mess she was in. On her chest was a large cinderblock that must've broken off from the walls during the bombing. Elizabeth groaned when she felt the pressure on her chest and used both of her scratched arms to push the debris off, letting her suck in some much needed oxygen.

Standing up, she saw that she stood in the ruins of the lab they were in only minutes before. Or maybe it could have been hours, she didn't know. There was debris and glass everywhere, making a crunching sound with every step she took. A few feet away from her was a large hole in the ground that went through at least two floors below.

She was careful as she stood by the edge of the hole, peering down below. "Hello? Guys?" Elizabeth called out, hearing her own voice echo back. There was the faint sound of running water, but other than that she got no reply.

Elizabeth cursed under her breath as she ran around the room, trying to find anything that would help her get in contact with the rest of the team. Upon seeing her knife on the ground, she managed a small smile to herself as she picked the weapon up. Her eyes traced over the familiar engravings on the hilt before she put it back in its place on her dirtied suit.

Her eyes scanned the room once more until she found what she was looking for. Elizabeth ran over to the corner of the room where a cabinet stood, somehow still intact. She rummaged through it until she found the small black earpieces kept in a jar.

She activated the small device before placing it in her left ear, praying that the rest of the team had theirs in. "Anyone on comms?" She asked frantically, only getting some static in response. "You gotta be shitting me," she murmured when there was still no reply.

"That's one hell of a mouth you got on you," a voice finally replied and Elizabeth let out a relieved laugh at the familiar  voice.

"Natasha," Elizabeth muttered to herself with a smile. "What happened to the place?" She asked in confusion, finally ready to get some answers on what caused this.

Natasha was hesitant to reply. "Um, Thanos is back."

Elizabeth could feel her heart stop beating for a second. They were so close, she thought bitterly. They could never have anything good. "Time travel stuff?" She asked, not caring to know about the details. All that mattered was that the grape man was back.

"Yeah," Natasha confirmed and Elizabeth heard the clanging of some pipes from the other end. "But I have the gauntlet with me, that's what he's after."

"What about the rest of the team?" Elizabeth asked just as there was the sound of loud thunder from above.

"No idea where they are," Natasha said. "But, if you're still in the compound, you should  probably take a look outside." Over the radio, Elizabeth heard the sounds of unusual growling that didn't sound too friendly to her.

The growling got louder and louder and Elizabeth grew worried. "Natasha?" Elizabeth questioned hesitantly. "What's going on?" Her face scrunched up, Elizabeth not liking how she couldn't see what was happening to her friend.

"Find everyone else," Natasha whispered right before the comms went dead.

For what must've been the hundredth time that day, Elizabeth swore under her breath. She took one more look at the ruined room around her, making sure that it was indeed empty before making her way over to the whole in the floor.

She looked down at the jump she'd make and shook her head to herself. "Down the rabbit hole we go," she muttered before she jumped down.

Her feet landed in a small puddle of water, the liquid splashing up onto the back of her legs. She looked around for any signs of life -besides her own- before she ran down what she could only guess was the ruined hallway of the compound.

Following the light at the end of the hall, she stopped herself before she could fall of the ledge that she now stood on. The wall had been blown clean off the building, leaving a large hole for her to overlook whatever remained where the compound once stood.

The sky had darkened drastically and Elizabeth guessed that the large alien ship out across the piece of land was one of the reasons. She looked at the ground ten feet below her and winced when she saw the fight that was happening.

Thanos had his double-edged sword raised before bringing it down onto Steve, the only thing protecting him being his shield. Which, much to her surprise began to chip away slowly under the seemingly never ending blows from the sword.

Elizabeth saw that Steve was now defenceless as he walked backward from Thanos with his half-broken shield. She took that as her cue to take a step off the ledge.

She timed her fall correctly so that she came to stand in between a fallen Steve and Thanos. Elizabeth looked up at Thanos who tilted his head at her in confusion. "You just couldn't stay away from us, could you?" She asked sarcastically with a shake of her head.

"I don't even know who you are," Thanos replied before he raised his sword once more before bringing it down onto Elizabeth quickly.

But the blade stopped inches away from her face as Elizabeth smirked to herself, tilting her head to the side to inspect the piece of alien metal. She tore her gaze away from the blade to look at Thanos, who had stopped all movement. A natural response that most people had when she inflicted pain on them.

At first glance, one would think Thanos was a statue. He stood still in place with his arm still stretched out, the sword in his hand pointing at Elizabeth. But then upon closer inspection, Elizabeth saw how his body spasmed slightly and his muscled clenched up in pain.

"Doesn't matter if you don't know me," she told Thanos as she moved away from the tip of his sword. "I'm going to make you feel everything I felt, when you took them away from me," she seethed.

Elizabeth focused with a smile before she cocked her head to the side, watching as Thanos' eyes nearly popped out of it's sockets as he yelled out in agony. She didn't even flinch at the sound, watching as he tried to move his arms first. His hand reaching out to swipe at Elizabeth's head slowly, as if he was moving underwater. Which would seem fitting, as Thanos was practically drowning in his own pain.

She'll admit, it was very theatrical as she stood and watched Thanos struggle to breathe from the pain in his chest. But Elizabeth saw an opportunity to be dramatic and seized it without a second thought.

However, she felt Thanos slowly fight back against her hold on him. His arm moved slightly faster as he reached out to grab her, his sword nearly slicing her neck open if she hadn't side stepped it quickly.

Just when she thought Thanos was going to break free from the onslaught of never ending pain, there was a rush of air beside her face before she saw the flying hammer out of the corner of her eye. The hammer struck Thanos square in the jaw but it didn't stop there. The force of the weapon, threw Thanos back so far that he was nothing more than a purple speck in the distance to Elizabeth.

Elizabeth let her shoulder drop, the amount of energy she had used finally catching up to her. She turned around and expected to see Thor behind her, but instead she saw Steve kneeling on the ground behind her. He breathed heavily with his free hand still outstretched, letting her know that he was the one to throw Mjolnir.

"Since when could you do that?" Elizabeth asked as she jutted her thumb over her shoulder at the boulders of rubble that Thanos had gone through due to the force of Steve's throw.

Steve sighed before he fell on his back, his chest rising and falling rapidly. "Since a couple of minutes ago," he answered as Elizabeth walked over to help him up. "It's a new thing."

"Cool," Elizabeth commented as she took in his appearance. His helmet looked like it was cracked on one side and his face was covered in soot and ash. His knuckles were bloodied and bruised and of course there was the problem of his broken shield.

"What happened to the rest of the team?" Elizabeth asked as she looked around them, hoping to catch a glimpse of someone else who wasn't looking to kill them.

"Tony and Thor are somewhere around here, passed out most likely." Steve looked around as he spoke tiredly. "The rest of the team is probably still stuck inside," he finished before he looked back at Elizabeth.

She nodded along to his words. "Natasha's inside, she has the gauntlet," Elizabeth informed Steve. "She's going to keep it away from Thanos."

"Good," Steve said before the two of them both turned their gazes in the distance where they saw Thanos stand tall with his  sword still in his hand.

Behind him, a bright beam of light hit the ground as Thanos' army emerged. Every single one of them prepped for nothing less than war. All the outriders, aliens and whatever more they had killed five years ago in Wakanda stood beside Thanos, still alive and kicking.

In the sky, a handful of Chitauri Leviathan appeared as they dropped even smaller ships down to stand by Thanos. There were just so many of them. Thanos smirked as he held his arms open to showcase his large army, waiting for the two of them to make the first move.

Steve looked down at the ground as he gritted his teeth together hard. He reached a shaking hand down and tightened the lose strap of his destroyed shield. He was about to take a step forward when he realised Elizabeth still stood beside him.

"Then we're on our own for this one." Elizabeth looked at Steve as she rubbed her hands together. They were outnumbered, they both knew that. They were outnumbered to the point where they knew there was no way they'd win.

Steve shook his head at her. "You don't have to do this," he stated with a shake of his head. He was about to tell her that she should go but she cut him off with a shrug.

"I have no other plans tonight anyway," she informed him with a smile, knowing that there was nothing better than dying with your friends. Well, that was a lie. She could think of another way she'd be able to die happy, in the arms of the person she loved. But instead she relished in the thought of one day seeing him again, no matter how far in the future that may be.  And that was enough for her to be at peace with herself.

"Alright then," Steve sighed before he patted her on the back. He was happy that he had someone he could call his friend by his side.

The two nodded at each other determinedly. But before either of them could take a single step toward Thanos and his army, a third voice rang thought their ears.

"Cap? Lizzie?" The voice said as the two looked at each other in pure shock, not sure if the voice they heard was merely a figment of their imagination. "Guys it's Sam, do you read me?" Sam repeated through their earpieces.

Elizabeth looked around for any sight of Sam as she spoke. "Sam?" She asked quietly as Steve didn't say anything out of shock.

"On your left," Sam replied and Elizabeth could practically hear the smug smirk in his voice.

Steve and Elizabeth shared a wary glance before they turned around to see what Sam was talking about.

Ever so slowly, the two watched as a large portal surrounded by an orange ring appeared. A bright light came out from it as three figures stepped out from the portal. Elizabeth could feel the tears of joy nearly escape her eyes when she saw Shuri, T'Challa and Okoye stand in front of the portal.

T'Challa looked at both of them, nodding slightly and Elizabeth felt the pure relief and joy from Steve. Elizabeth nearly felt herself sob when she saw Sam fly out of the portal, winking down at her as he flew up above.

Then, just when she thought she couldn't get any happier, more portals emerged. Too many for her to count. Each one dropping either a familiar face or a new one, but it didn't matter since every single one of them were there to help.

Elizabeth managed to crack a smile when she saw her brothers standing beside the rest of the Wakandan army. She raised a hand and waved at them in disbelief as the two waved back.

"Yibambe," T'Challa started with a loud and clear voice as the rest of the Wakandans repeated after him, banging the ends of their spears on the ground.

Suddenly, there was a loud rumble from the Avengers Compound and Elizabeth saw Scott break through the roof of the ceiling. He walked out carefully to where the rest of their army was. He knelt down and opened his hand, letting Rocket, Rhodey, Bruce and Natasha jump out

Elizabeth and Steve looked in awe at the hundreds of people they had by their side. "Guess we're not on our own after all," Steve told her and Elizabeth saw the unshed tears in his eyes.

She nodded her head at his words but her eyes scanned the many faces in front of them, looking for one in particular. Elizabeth panicked lightly when she couldn't see him anywhere. "Steve, where's-"

"He's here," Steve assured her. "I'm sure." Elizabeth wanted to take his word for it, yet she still wanted to run through the crowd and scan each face to make sure Bucky was there. But she knew she couldn't so she just turned to the front hoping Steve was right.

Natasha came up to the two of them with a smile before she stood beside Steve, grabbing his hand in hers. A few seconds later Wanda showed up on the other side of Elizabeth, her hands glowing a bright red.

"You're late," Elizabeth chided the redhead just as Thor and Tony dropped in to join the group at the front.

"I'm not even gonna ask where you've been," Tony commented as he pointed his finger at Wanda before his helmet came back on.

Steve looked at all of the people around around him one last time with a wide smile on his face. "Avengers!" He called before reaching his arm out to call Mjolnir to his open hand. "Assemble."
