A FLIGHT TO CATCH
"Who are we waiting for again?" Elizabeth asked from the backseat of the small Beatle that they all sat in. She leaned her head against Bucky's shoulder as his arm went around her waist.
The car was parked underneath a bridge that produced a rumbling sound whenever a train passed overhead. In the drivers seat, Steve leaned against the steering wheel as he looked out the windshield. "She'll be here soon," he assured the three in the car.
"Oh a little lady friend," Sam teased in the passenger seat with a smirk at Steve. The blond was about to fire a rebuttal when the sound of tyres on gravel made them all turn their heads.
From behind the pillars of cement, a black car drove up to them only to stop a few feet away from the hood of their car. Elizabeth watched closely as the drivers door opened to reveal Sharon Charter step out of the car. She looked towards the group in the car with a friendly nod of her head.
"Wait here," Steve told them before he opened the door and stepped out to meet Sharon halfway. The three left in the car watched as the two spoke before moving to the trunk of Sharon's car.
Elizabeth absentmindedly played with Bucky's fingers that lay in her lap, her eyes feeling heavy ever so slightly. She let out a light yawn that she covered with the back of her free hand. She may have been sleepy but she knew they still had a lot to do, so she forced her eyes open and sat up straight.
Beside her, Bucky cleared his throat loudly, catching both Elizabeth and Sam's attention. "Can you move your seat up?" He asked once the small space in the backseat had finally caught up to him.
Sam looked at the backseat of the car through the rearview mirror seeing as Bucky moved his long legs uncomfortably in the tight space. He felt bad for the guy, sure Sam didn't necessarily like him since he had tried to kill him before. But that didn't mean he deserved to be treated like crap.
His hand had reached down to pull the back of his seat up but he stopped his movements when he saw Elizabeth mutter something to Bucky, making him smile lightly and kissing her forehead. They made him sick, maybe Sam should give Bucky a hard time. Why not mess with the old man a bit?
Sam brought his hand back up to rest by the window as he stared straight ahead pretending he didn't see anything. "No," he answered the man behind him sternly.
"Come on, Sam," Elizabeth scolded with a shake of her head. Bucky just looked down into his lap as she continued to play with his fingers.
Without looking back at the couple, Sam reached his hand down to the side of his seat, looking for the lever that controlled the position of the seat. His action gave Bucky slight hope but Elizabeth knew better than to expect him to do the right thing.
He pulled the lever backwards and dropped his seat down even more. The back of the seat hitting Bucky's knees harshly. Sam ignored the disappointed sigh from Elizabeth as he gazed out the window, a shit eating grin on his face.
Smiling apologetically at Bucky, Elizabeth moved to the other end of the car as far as she could until her side was pressed against the car door. She patted the free space beside her with a smile at Bucky.
He thanked her softly before moving out from behind Sam's seat. It still wasn't large enough to be comfortable in but it was better than what he had before, that was for sure. Once she had gotten comfortable in her new position, she leaned over to peer over the seat in front of her.
They continued to watch in silence as Steve and Sharon continued to speak. Steve coming out from the back of her car with his shield in hand. The two spoke for a moment before leaning in closer to each other.
She groaned and turned her head to the side, already knowing what was going on. "Gross," she scrunched up her nose. After a few short moments, she turned her head back to Steve and Sharon. She expected them to have their business taken care of but they were still busy sucking each other faces off. "Ew."
"You know," Bucky began quietly grabbing her attention as he leaned closer to her. "We aren't exactly ones to talk, dollface." He smirked at her as she turned bright red, not expecting him to say that.
Sam made a fake gagging noise from the front seat. "Now that's gross," he commented as Elizabeth rolled her eyes at him.
Once Steve and Sharon were finally done, Steve made his way over to the car with his shield in hand. As he walked by the passenger window, Sam held a thumbs up that he proceeded to ignore, continuing to the trunk of the car.
He opened it up and tossed his shield inside. "Sam," Steve called out through the opening. Sam turned in his seat and raised an eyebrow at Steve. "Go grab your suit," he said before closing the trunk.
Sam scoffed with a shake of his head and the door to the drivers seat opened. Steve slid into place to be met with Sam's glare. "What?" He asked innocently.
"What," Sam mocked while Elizabeth and Bucky watched the exchange in amusement. "Why couldn't you have gotten my stuff too?"
Steve stuttered for a moment as he tried to find a good excuse. "My hands were full," he offered meekly as Elizabeth stifled her laugh into Bucky's shoulder.
"Trust me," Sam began as he began to open his door finding no use in arguing with. "We know," he continued with an implying smirk before getting out of the car leaving Steve as red as a tomato.
The two in the backseat couldn't contain their laughter anymore and they cackled quietly, making Steve turn to look at them. "Right," he cleared this throat. "So here's what we're going to do next," he began, trying to get the two to stop their amused laughs.
"Lizzie's gonna go back to the compound and grab Pietro and Wanda. Then-" Steve was interrupted by Bucky.
"Where am I going to go?" He asked with a tilted head, somewhat knowing the answer. "I'm going with her, right?"
Steve sighed, he should've seen this coming. If Bucky was anything, he was loyal and protective as hell. "You're staying here with us."
"But what if-" Bucky's rebuttal was cut short when Elizabeth tugged on his arm lightly. He looked back to her with a raised eyebrow.
"I'll be fine," she assured him. "I know that place, nothing's gonna happen to me. Plus I've got Pietro and Wanda, we're pretty much unstoppable." Elizabeth added the confidence to her voice to convince him.
"We'll need all the help we can get if we're going to go out to Siberia," Steve chimed in to help out.
Bucky brought his eyes away from her to look at Steve. "Why can't you go? Or even Sam," He asked as Sam opened the trunk of the car before chucking his suit inside.
"If either of us step foot inside the US we'll get recognised and arrested on the spot," Steve explained as Elizabeth hummed in understanding. While she may have been an Avenger the public didn't know her much besides the incident in Sokovia.
The passenger door opened and Sam scooted back in his seat. "And," he began, hearing the last of their conversation. "I have my own person to pick up."
"Do you trust me?" Elizabeth asked Bucky when she saw he was still ready to protest.
He stammered for a minute trying to avoid her piercing gaze. "Maybe I could come with you," he offered.
She shook her head at him when he avoided her question. "Do you trust me?" She repeated. Bucky sighed and reluctantly nodded his head, his worry making her calm him down slightly. "Then trust that I'll be okay."
"How are you even gonna get there?" Bucky asked. If he couldn't tag along he at least wanted to make sure that everything would run smoothly.
She looked to the two in the front seat, wondering the same thing. She couldn't exactly just hop on a plane and she doubted that Tony would be lenient with the use of one of his jets. Especially after everything that's happened.
"I called in a favour," Sam told them proudly as he leaned back into his seat. He turned to Steve and gave out the instructions. "Start the car."
Steve complied as he shifted the gears. He turned in his seat to look out through the back window to reverse. He got distracted when his eyes landed on Bucky and Elizabeth. Bucky smiling widely as Elizabeth muttered something to him in a hushed whisper. He smiled at the sight, happy that someone was finally able to make his bestfriend smile like he did all those years ago.
"Steve?" Sam brought him out of his daze with a crease between his eyebrows. "You okay?" Steve nodded in response before stepping on the gas. The sound of tyres on gravel sounded and they drove out form under the secluded bridge.
Elizabeth leaned out to poke her head between the two front seats. "Where are we going again?" She asked with a glance at the two.
"The airport," Sam answered her with a grin. "You got a flight to catch."
***
The Avengers Compound was empty and quiet as Elizabeth walked through the dark halls in the middle of the night. She was careful not to make any noise to alert whoever was here, mainly Vision.
There was a sound of faint talking from one of the rooms across from where she stood, making her move quietly in that direction. Yellow light illuminated the hallway she was in from the open doorway that recognised as Wanda's room. This meant that her own room was only a few doors down.
While her main goal her was to get Wanda and Pietro to come with her to Berlin, it wouldn't hurt to grab a clean pair of clothes. Slowly, she crept her way pass the open door to see Wanda and Vision talking happily on her bed. Ignoring them for now, she raced past the door with its light shining onto her figure for a split second until she was in front of her own bedroom door.
Her hand rested on the doorknob before she swung the door open, wincing slightly at the creak it made. She walked inside the dark room and closed the door behind her, not bothering to hear the 'click' of it closing properly. Flipping on the light switch she looked around to see everything as she left it.
Quickly, she bent down and pulled out an empty duffel bag from underneath her bed. She put the bag onto the bed, making a muffled thump. Opening her closet, she took out a fresh change of clothes and the suit that Tony made for her. As she carelessly shoved the items into her bag, she sensed someone by the door.
"What are you doing back here?" Pietro asked loudly as Elizabeth turned back to face him. He stood by the open door with his arms crossed. His light hair fell into his eyes, making him brush it out of his face with his left hand. The action too quick for her eyes to catch.
She hushed him and turned back to zip up the duffel bag before slinging it over her shoulder. "I'm here to get you and Wanda out of here," she explained in a whisper. "We need your help, and you two being stuck here isn't doing anyone any good."
"Trust me, I know." Pietro agreed with her last statement with a scoff. "I tried to get Wanda out -many times- but The Vision is very good at his job. It doesn't help that Wanda thinks that she is better off here."
"She doesn't want anyone else to get hurt," Elizabeth muttered to herself. She knew Wanda well enough to know that she was still beating herself up for what happened in Lagos. "Okay, you grab your sister then meet me outside," Elizabeth instructed Pietro.
"What about Vision?" He asked as Elizabeth stuffed a last minute pair of socks into the bag hanging off her shoulder. "He won't go down without a fight, believe me I tried." Pietro shivered as he thought of all his attempts to leave with his sister.
"If you get Wanda out I can sneak up on him and put him to sleep." She fiddled with the strap of the bag by her side. If it came down to it, she knew she couldn't beat Vision without a hold on his emotions. So she needed every chance she'd get.
There was the sound of some humming from the wall, making both their heads turns to the sound of the noise. Slowly, Vision walked through the wall to stand beside her bed. He was dressed in a pair of khakis and a button up shirt. It took them all a while to get used to his bright red face and lack of ears but they got there eventually.
"I'm afraid that's not going to happen Miss Grace," Vision said in a polite manner with small steps toward her and Pietro. From the door she heard the sound of running footsteps and saw Wanda stop by the doorway with wide eyes. "Go back to the room, Wanda," Vision tried to tell her.
Wanda looked between her brother who shook his head and Vision who continued to stare down Elizabeth. She was torn and had no idea what to do so she stood her ground silently. Pietro saw her hesitance and took that as his cue.
He sped over to stand by his sisters side protectively. He locked eyes with Elizabeth who nodded, telling him to get themselves out of there. "As fun as that sounds," Pietro began as he slowly grabbed ahold of Wanda's hand. "We have other plans."
"Please consider the consequences of your actions," he turned his attention to the twins, giving Elizabeth enough time to focus on his emotions. "If you go with her, they'll never stop being afraid of you." He looked to Wanda, taking a few steps toward her as he tried to convince her.
"I can't control their fear," Wanda said as Elizabeth moved to stand behind Vision. "I can only control my own," she continued on. Wanda looked past Vision's shoulder and locked eyes with Elizabeth who mouthed 'go,' to the both of them.
Vision saw Wanda's small nod and spun around to face Elizabeth. From behind him, she saw Pietro pick up Wanda before speeding off. Vision heard them leave and sighed as he felt the stone in the center of his head heat up. "I am sorry about this," he began.
"So am I," Elizabeth responded with a grimace on her face. Vision tilted his head to the side as she focused on the one emotion she knew best, pain.
Vision froze mid-step as he felt all of the muscles in his stomach cramp up, the pain catching him off guard. He blinked rapidly with a pained groan. She intensified the pain, making him drop to his knees slowly. It spread from his stomach to his waist, to his chest and arms then his head.
Elizabeth winced when she saw him double over in pain. She watched as the stone in the center of his head slowly lose colour. Going from a bright and shining gold to a dull yellow. His chest heaved up and down as he continued to groan and clutch at his head with both hands.
Once she was sure he would be too weak to try anything, she changed from pain to drowsiness. He fought her back at first, his eyes fighting to stay open. But then she mixed the two, pain and sleep. That did the trick. She watched as his eyes slowly rolled to the back of his head and he slumped forward onto the carpeted floors face first. She waited until she saw the steady rise and fall of his chest before leaving the room.
Bringing a hand up to rub at her eyes, she felt her vision blur for a moment. She was completely drained and exhausted. All she wanted to do was flop back onto her bed and fall asleep. She didn't even care if Vision was still passed out on the floor. They could start a nap group.
Shaking it all off, she continued in a sprint to the entrance of the compound. She may or may not have stopped halfway there to grab a small snack from the pantry and some food for the road. Now with a full stomach she approached the twins who spoke heatedly at the steps of the front door.
"What's going on?" She asked the two once she caught up with them. Pietro stepped back from his sister in annoyance.
"She doesn't want to leave," Pietro informed her with a scoff. Wanda remained silent as she stared past her brother at the open land that they had around them.
"Wanda?" Elizabeth asked the younger girl while she tried to catch her eyes.
She inhaled sharply through her nose before meeting Elizabeth's tired eyes. "What happened to Vision?" She avoided the question with one of her own.
Elizabeth waved her concern away. "He's fine," she stated. "He'll be asleep for a couple of hours." She avoided mentioning what it took to get him to that point.
"He is a robot," Pietro chimed in with a light laugh. "He isn't asleep you just turned him off." Elizabeth would be lying if she said she didn't find that funny but she kept quiet when she saw Wanda's hesitance.
When she saw Elizabeth still expecting an answer, she spoke up. "You two go," she told them. "I've caused enough problems." She stretched the sleeves of her jacket up until her fingers as she looked down.
Pietro gestured to Wanda as if saying, 'See what I mean?' "Come on, Wanda." Elizabeth tried to persuade her. "You gotta help us out here. You said you've cause problems right?" Wanda nodded at her question silently. "Well then here's your chance to solve them, you're our solution."
Elizabeth and Pietro watched as the gears turned in Wanda's mind debating what to answer. "Okay, I'm in." Her answer made both of them grin widely. Pietro grabbed his sister in for a hug as he messed up her hair, causing Wanda to smack his arm lightly.
"Great," Elizabeth clapped her hands together. "Let's go." She began to lead the twins to the hangar on the other side of the compound. Sam's 'favour' that he called in being one of his friends from the Air Force giving them a ride.
"Where exactly are we going?" Wanda asked when she caught sight of the jet. Pietro smirked before speeding off.
"Ever been to Germany?" Elizabeth asked. Wanda shook her head. "I think you'll like it," she smiled just as Pietro came back by his sisters side.
He steadied himself with an arm around Wanda's shoulder. "It is a nice plane," Pietro said cheekily. "Even the toilets."
His words made Elizabeth wrinkle her nose. "I'm gonna ignore that," Elizabeth muttered before boarding the plane with the two right behind her.
