Chapter 4

I drew the above pictures to kinda show (SH/N). Of course, you can change the hair colour and style, the colour of mask and belt, the skin tone, the body shape etc to suit you. These were just quick doodles so I'm sorry that they're not great, I'm still getting used to drawing on my iPad.

Blue Beetle X Reader Chapter 4

No one wanted to believe that Artemis was really dead. But I was there. I watched it happen. Before she had 'retired', I had grown close to Artemis, I idolised her. She became a sister figure to me, so I took the death pretty hard. I remember being so happy to see her again that day that she returned. I pulled her into a bone crushing hug and wouldn't leave her alone. Some of the newer members of the team seemed a bit confused as they had never really seem the loving side of me before, I tended to keep my emotions at bay while around them.

Me and a group of the boys- Jaime, Bart, Robin, and Beast Boy- were down in the grotto, looking up at the new holographic statue of our fallen archer. I was the only one still in uniform, which they all thought to be peculiar. Roughly 80% of my wardrobe was made out of clothes that I stole from Jaime, 10% from Tye, and the rest were just random items of clothing that I had been given for birthdays and Christmas. Jaime would recognise any of my clothing within a couple of seconds.
We all turned to glare at Bart as he very noisily snacked on what appeared to be freeze dried whezees. There was no doubt that he was related to Wally.
"Uh.. Sorry.. Mourning makes me hungry." He muttered sheepishly once he realised that we were all glaring at him. I watched as Jaime forcefully pulled him away and accused him of stealing the snack from his locker. Ha! He's one to talk! I always catch him stealing my food! I tried not to make it too obvious that I was eavesdropping by putting one ear of my headphones it, yet not turning on any music so that I could still hear their conversation.
"Hey, hey, hey! Where I come from it's not stealing, it's scavenger rights!" Bart protested. I could practically feel the scowl that must have been on Jaime's face. He took his food very seriously, one of the many things that we had in common. "The point is uh- we don't have chicken whezees, freeze dried or otherwise, in my era. So blame Kid Flash.. He got me hooked."
"Forget I asked." I looked back as my friend face palmed and I failed at stifling a giggle, causing the two to look back at me in slight confusion. Fortunately, Bart took the attention away from me.
"So why is this here? I mean.. It's pretty and everything, but these people are heroes! They should have giant statues, big crashing memorials in the Hall of Justice or something!" He proclaimed, waving his arms and his snack around as he spoke. I had to agree with the point he was making.
"Yeah, I asked that too. Captain Atom says that the league doesn't want or need a public shrine to its fallen." Jaime replied with a twinge of sadness in his voice. "But I don't know.. Seems to me they just don't want to advertise that we're not immortal. The handful of regular people who have seen me in action- they think I'm this guy in a new costume. The world will never know about Ted Kord's sacrifice."
"But you know! And you're carrying on the grand Blue Beetle heroic tradition, right?" Bart attempted to brighten the mood. "Right (Y/-" He began but caught himself. "-I -I mean (SH/N)?" Oh I was so going to have words with him later. That was way too close for comfort. Fortunately, Jaime didn't seem to take notice of the slip up. I nodded in reply to the question and looked down at the floor, pretending not to be too interested in the conversation.
"I wish!" I was slightly shocked at Jaime's sudden outburst, he rarely let me see him get angry. "It's such a total rip! Superboy has Superman, Wonder Girl has Wonder Woman, Robin has Batman, Nightwing, AND Batgirl, you're been in this era like what? Five minutes? And already you have three Flash mentors, one who feeds you junk food! But me? I never even got the chance to meet the guy who should have been my mentor." Part of me felt bad for my friend, but I couldn't help but interject in the conversation.
"I understand how you feel, Blue." I sighed, taking a step towards the pair. "But at least you have someone to actually look up to, a legacy to continue, whether he's dead or not. When I first joined the team over 3 years ago now I had no one to look up to, no one to mentor me. While Ted Kord may be dead and unable to physically mentor you, at least you can learn from the life that he led. I'm just some random girl would suddenly, completely out of the blue, gained powers and I was lucky enough to be found and accepted by the team who made an attempt to understand me. But I had no one who had powers similar to my own to take after! I have no one to show me what I'm capable of! I'm still finding new powers to this very day and I don't have any idea what to do with them. So count yourself lucky that you have someone who you can at least look up to. I can't even talk to the people I love about this." I looked up at Jaime's shocked face as I said the last part, but looked away before anything clicked in his mind and he realised who I was.
"Heh.. I hear that.." Bart chuckled awkwardly in an attempt to lift the tension from the air. I sighed and shook my head, deciding it was about time that I left the grotto. As I made my way out, I heard Bart and Jaime talking behind me and agreeing to hang out.  It almost felt like Bart was trying to keep my best friend away from me, although why he would do that was a total mystery..

--Time Skip--

"Welcome home." I frowned as Jaime finally walked through his bedroom only to find me sat on his bed. We had agreed to hang out that day as we hadn't seen one another as much as we would have liked to recently. Our plan was to look a little more into Tye's disappearance, I had made us lunch so that we could eat on the go. However, when I got to his house, his mom informed me that he had gone out with another friend about ten minutes before I got there. There was no doubt that this friend was Bart. I wasn't sure why, but lately he had been doing everything that he possible could to keep me from seeing my best friend. I had asked him in the nicest way possible to let us have this day to finally hang out again, but clearly he didn't listen.
Jaime's mom offered to make me a drink and let me stay there for a few hours, which I gladly accepted seeing as I had nowhere else to go and no one else to talk to. She has always been an absolute angel to me, particularly after the untimely death of my parents a few years ago.
It was my fault. I killed them. Not intentionally of course, but I killed them nonetheless. I had only just begun developing my powers at that point after being discovered a couple of weeks prior by the Justice League who helped set me up with the team. I still didn't have total control over my first power -the fire power- at that point, but I didn't think too much of it. I figured that I wasn't all that dangerous as would know to be on the lookout for fire near me and I'd be able to put it out before it caused any serious damage. What I didn't count on was my powers being active while I slept.
My older brother Henry had been out all night at some party, only to come home to find our house and a few of the adjacent ones completely engulfed in flames. The authorities were amazed that I managed to get out of the house completely unharmed, they called me a little miracle. My parents? They weren't so lucky. Nor were a couple of the neighbours. The death that hit me most besides my parents was the little girl who lived next door. She was only 8 and she looked up to me like an older sister. Her name was Annalise and I loved her to bits.
The cause of the fire still remains unknown to many. Only me, a few members of the Justice League, and Nightwing know the true cause of it. I stayed at Mount Justice for a few of months after that, I think Henry stayed with some of his friends. We were never that close, and not even the deaths of our parents could change that. The Justice League helped me control my powers and they let me and Henry move back into a new house nearly half a year later that had been bought for us by some members of the Justice League. They also paid our bills, bought us food and other essentials once a week, Batman being the main supplier. He may seem tough and cold to others, but I knew deep down that he was a total softy. Fortunately, Henry didn't ask any questions about who paid for everything. Explaining why superheroes were paying for us to survive would have been more than a little difficult.

"Oh (Y/N)! Lo siento- I completely forgot that we-" Jaime began to apologise to me but I cut him off and stood up.
"Save it." I huffed, beginning to walk out of the door but he caught my wrist in an attempt to keep me from leaving.
"Really I-" He started once more, but again I interrupted him.
"Why don't you go an tell someone who cares? Maybe like your new best friend?" I jerked my hand away from him and shook my head. "Don't bother following me, amigo." My last word was full of spite, and with that I stormed out of the Reyes' household with a quick goodbye to Jaime's parents and made my way to Mount Justice where I would hopefully be more welcome.

"Recognised Blue Beetle B22, Impulse B23" The systems announced the arrival of the two people who I really didn't want to see right now. I hadn't spoken to Jaime since my outburst yesterday, I had at 21 unread texts and 10 missed calls from him.
"Haha! Left them in the dust!" Impulse cheered while holding up a strange object unlike anything else that I had seen.
"Left who in the dust?" Nightwing asked while walking up to the pair, me following closely behind. Without anything else to do I had been helping him out with some things around Mount Justice. By helping out I mean I poked him and pulled weird faces while he tried to get work done. "And what is that?" He questioned, pointing at the device in Impulse's hand.
"Souvenir!" Bart proclaimed, clearly quite proud of himself as he held it up for us to see.
"Souvenirs are Beast Boy's thing." Blue Beetle informed him.
"Oh really? I thought it was Kid Flash-" Thankfully, Nightwing cut up the little lovers quarrel.
"Can we get to it?" He seemed somewhat impatient with the two.
"Sorry.. Aqualad attacked us with Icicle Jr, the Terror Twins, and a ninja girl I didn't recognise." Blue explained to the older boy. A new girl? I guess Aqualad got a new girlfriend. How sweet.
"This is how they tracked Blue! I made sure they couldn't do it again." Impulse grinned. He really was proud of himself, but judging by the look on Nightwing's face, he was about to be in a shit load of trouble. This would be entertaining to watch.
"So you brought foreign, possibly alien, tech into the cave?" Come on Nightwing! Punch him already! I want to see blood! "Rookie mistake." He sighed, and it became clear that he wasn't going to punch him. Shame. "Alright, give it here." Reluctantly, Bart handed over the device. I had really been hoping to see a fight...

Something wasn't right. Something just really did not seem right, I could feel it. The air was think, and the silence was unnerving to say the least. I couldn't even here Beast Boy's television anymore, or Wolf's light snoring. I turned around to suddenly find myself face-to-face with a masked girl who I didn't recognise as friend or foe, all I knew was that she most certainly shouldn't be here. Before I had the chance to react, she clasped something heavy and metallic around my neck.
"Thanks but I don't to wear necklaces, I'm more of a bracelet girl." I smirked, readying myself to attack. But my powers didn't seem work. It was almost like they didn't even exist.
"I'm sorry.." The girl whispered, almost inaudible. Her voice sounded vaguely familiar, but I couldn't quite figure out where I had heard it before. She held something up and pressed a button. Pain suddenly overcame my body as I heard yelling somewhere in the distance, it sounded like Jaime. I panicked, worried that had managed to get to him too. But eventually the pain became unbearable and with those final thoughts, I passed out.

--Time Skip--

As I woke up, I attempted to rub my eyes and stretch, but I found both my arms and legs tied up, rendering me unable to move. I attempted to use my powers but I once again discovered that I couldn't. Looking around I found myself sat in an air ship next to Beast Boy who seemed to be waking up. Next to him was a still unconscious Blue Beetle and I felt rage sweep through my body. I'd get whoever did this to Jaime and I'd make them pay. Next to him was a now awake Impulse. We locked eyes briefly but I turned my head. Prolonged eye contact made me uncomfortable.. In fact, all eye contact made me uncomfortable. I avoided it whenever I could.
"Can't believe we didn't end Superboy when we had the chance!" I heard an outraged voice from somewhere behind me. I recognised it as belonging to one of the Terror Twins.
"Boss here still has a soft spot for his old team." That voice was Icicle Jr. I've never liked him, he'd flirt whenever we found ourselves in a fight, and never seemed to get the message that I was definitely not interested.
"Do it." Aqualad's voice commanded. I used to look up to him, back when I joined the team he was the first person I met, he made me feel welcome. When I found out that I had the ability to manipulate water, he and Aquagirl helped me train as we had very similar powers. We were all devastated when Aquagirl died, Kaldur taking it the worst. None of us ever thought that he'd turn to a life of crime after it though, even if his biological father was Black Manta.
"You sure?" I knew that voice belonged to the girl who had managed to render me powerless in a matter of a few seconds. I still couldn't quite put my finger on where I had heard it before.
"Do it." Kaldur repeated, this time with more force. There was a pause of a few seconds before a deafeningly loud explosion. I watched with tears in my eyes as the place that I had called home for such a long period of time, Mount Justice, was completely destroyed. All I could hope was that Nightwing, Superboy, Wolf, and Sphere made it out safely.... And that Nightwing picked my phone up on the way out because if not, Kaldur was so buying me a new one.

As bad as it may be, I had to but at least a little bit of comic relief into this otherwise quite sad and serious chapter...
