CHAPTER 2 : Scent and Sessions

Laura

I woke up snuggling more into the covers, inhaling the overwhelming scent that was invading my nostrils. Goddess! I so wanted to roll in the essence of it and never wash it off me.

My wolf kept nudging me throughout the night to let her out and go in search of her mate. I wanted to smack her head because she wasn't understanding the fact that he could be a potential. And if our mate had felt us here, distinguished our scent then why didn't he come see us. This was not my pack and I couldn't just go cause ruckus in a pack whose Alpha was feared.

No, of course I was not scared of the Alpha. But I knew better to work in peace. I had come here for a reason and I was going to leave after I had done my job perfectly rather than be the cause of chaos. I did not want anyone unnecessarily killed because of me.

Blood shed was definitely on my list here.

But for the hunters and their goons. Damn yes!

My wolf whined and stomped her feet but I paid her no mind. She was an Alpha and she knew better to act like one. I got ready wearing a formal shirt and skirt. It was nine-thirty and I had to meet the Alpha first, check the letter the council had sent, take his signature and carry on with my work.

Rick was still sleeping when I left the cabin, taking along with me my files, laptop and the two books I needed to make notes. Entering the pack house, I saw Villa with a small ten or eleven year old girl. She was feeding the little girl her breakfast as her attention snapped to me. The scent invaded my senses again making it difficult for me to take further steps.

Goddess, Help me!!

I kept my head high with a smile as I went in towards them. The girl no doubt was Villa's daughter. She smelled of her. "Good morning." I greeted them.

"Good morning." Villa and her little smiley daughter greeted. I could feel the small girl's heart race as she looked at me.

Villa nudged her with a smile as I took a seat beside them. "Hi. I'm Lyla Vicky Mathew and I am eleven years old. I want to grow up to be a doctor like you!" She finished and looked back at her mother for assurance about her little speech.

My smile grew tenfold listening to her. I was here to find candidates that would not only help me on the outside as a tertiary defense team but I also needed people who had an interest in medicine as well, who understood not just werewolf medicine but also were willing to learn things that concerned other shifters.

We were not just trying to save our kind. We wanted the hunters dead once and for all. We wanted to do this for every single one of them who were under the radar of the hunters and also the ones who were trying to gain power over the others.

Layla still had some growing up to do. But goddess, I was already taking a liking towards her.

I smiled at the little girl as her mother nodded at her and said, "That's amazing. Well we just want more like you. And don't worry I'll keep my eye on you to make sure you grow up to become who you want to be."

She smiled brightly with her big cheeks showing, "Thankyou!" She said, causing her mother to chuckle.

"I'll get you your breakfast." Villa said and I nodded at her.

"Dr. Laura." Lyla called-out. I looked at her, resting my chin on my hands and nodded for her to carry on. "Will it be okay if I join the sessions with you?" She asked.

"Yeah. sure." I told her and she did a quick hurray for herself.

"I won't disappoint you. I've read the book stating ayurveda of Indian origin and I know most of the names." She told me, making me look back at her in utter shock.

"That is so amazing! Goddess, I am so going to adopt you." I said, as Villa came out with a plate of food, chuckling.

"She spends three hours of her day in the clinic." Villa told me as she placed the plate in front of me.

"No really. I will adopt her right away!" I amusingly warned, making them laugh.

I was almost done with my breakfast when a guy entered. He looked at Villa first and nodded, winking quickly to Lyla. His brown eyes moved to me as he greeted, "I'm Beta Eli Ambrose. I'll be looking into the document matters." He said, making me narrow my eyes at him.

I had heard about him before. He was a partner in crime with his Alpha. The two were called duos or something. Not that I remember. My wolf kept an eye on him since he had entered the place. His wolf was calm, not a sign of anything alarming.

"Nice to meet you." I nodded with a smile.

"I'll be upstairs in my office. Please have enough." He said, returning a small smile as he walked upstairs.

Once I was done, Villa took me upstairs where the scent was maximum but still not as much as it should be. It was like the person wasn't here for a long time and his scent was vanishing. The first door I saw as we reached up led us into the Beta's office.

I had to keep my wolf at bay seeing the way she was howling inside my head to be let out. I was in a fight with myself, trying to gather all my emotions that were messing with me.

Seriously.... Kill me!!

I wanted to block my nostrils shut and not think about the scent. As we reached up, the corridor to my left caught my attention. All other scents felt like they were cleansed off this place. The scent was maximum here but still vanishing and it was leading to a lot of theories in my head. But I couldn't go look at it because meddling in any pack was not on my agenda.

The council had strict rules about this whole mission. I was an Alpha and an alpha in another pack wasn't much appreciated. The packs only appreciated the help as long as the rules were liable.

Pushing my thoughts back and shaking myself out of the trance of the unknown scent, I moved into the Beta's office. He was seated on his seat, filling in his files.

He smiled and asked me to take a seat. I did and passed him the papers he had to sign. He exchanged the letter from the council and their visitor entry book towards me. I quickly filled in my and Rick's name along with the time, stay, reason and other things that were to be filled.

Eli read the whole thing I had passed him and made quick notes on his computer. I cross-checked the letter, singing it at the end.

"Alpha Laura Terrawater. It is said here that-" I cut him.

"I'd rather prefer to be called Dr. Laura Lucca Terrawater." He smiled and nodded.

"Sure, Dr. Laura Lucca Terrawater." He paused and continued, "It is mentioned here that you will also be looking for potential candidates from the pack to work with you on a project. May I ask what the project entails?"

"Yes. I am working with some of the other shifters and supernaturals, regarding the hunters and their increased kidnapping of young pups, killing them with unnatural substances injected in their bodies. We want packs to save our own kind from the cruel activities the hunters are carrying out. We feel safe here but the packs in the cities are in danger and sitting here saying it's their own business to look after, is not going to help any of us. One day it would bite us in the back. And so the project." I told them.

He looked at Villa and back at me. "That is a great initiative, Dr. Laura. But how are you going to execute the sessions with them because this paper also says 'no information regarding the project is to be leaked until the fifth or sixth session."

"Right. They won't know about it because we don't want to scare them away on the first day itself. There might be candidates who have the right amount of knowledge but are scared to move out or it can involve other reasons too. So in that case we won't put them in the primary or tertiary defense team but rather they could tend to the needs of the frontliners or a job that would not involve them being killed." I told them, clearly.

Eli hummed and looked back at the paper. "That is such a good thing you guys are doing. May the goddess bring you success." Villa said, moving to stand near the desk.

"Thank you." I said and we left after Eli was done with signing the paper.

I breathed in the heavy scent of the unknown man that danced in my head, making my wolf and I irritated yet we could feel the richness in it, the warmth it was giving us. Villa and I left for the place where we were supposed to meet the members. We walked for fifteen minutes and reached the pack clinic.

"We have a small hall here. It was used earlier after the incident. Now it remains empty." Villa told me.

All I could do was give her a small sad smile. I knew about what had conspired with the pack almost fifteen years ago. Everyone knew. The Alpha and Luna were killed in the attack along with their daughter and most of the pack. Even Midnight Pack suffered immense loss. What remained was the next Alpha, who everyone had already named as a cursed beast.

My wolf didn't like the thought of calling names for someone whose story had a difficult beginning. But the thought of the Alpha's absence in this pack was an unusual thing. Alpha's usually didn't leave the pack unless it involved business. I thought maybe the Alpha left to do the same. But somewhere in the back of my mind I had already linked the connection of the scent to the Alpha of this pack.

Alpha Indigo.

Keeping the thought just where it had to be, I moved into the hall where everyone was already gathered and seated. Whispers began about how I was an Alpha but a doctor who studied human medicine in the human world.

They had the right to be shocked because there was no Alpha doctor in the history of werewolves. Secondly, there wasn't a single wolf who went to study with the humans and survived with their wolves there.

Ravi and I excluded.

I went and stood at the front, looking at each one of them. I could smell around forty-two people here, old and young both. Lyla was sitting in the fourth row beside a woman.

They grew quiet as I began, "Nice you meet you, Crescent Moon. I'm Dr. Laura Lucca Terrawater and I will be conducting the sessions with you. I know, many of you have been studying medicine all your life and some are still learning like me. But. Yeah, there's always a but," I said, shaking my head with a smile as the crowd laughed, nodding while I continued, "But I want to make a point here that by the end of these sessions you are going to experience something so different that it had never been brought to your attention. It's going to change the way of our survival which is going to make us the biggest warriors we could ever be. Cause aren't doctors called the ones next to god?" I asked.

They nodded, humming and a look of contentment on their faces meaning they were loving it so far. A guy quickly helped me with connecting the laptop to the projector.

The screen projected my presentation and I thanked the guy quickly. I looked back at them and began again, "The topic for today is 'Share'. We've been practicing medicine since ancient times but sometimes the knowledge we share remains trapped in a particular region until someone else, thousands of years later finds the same medicine, tries to find components that could cure a particular disease and what not. So our lack of knowledge to treat a particular disease or anything for that matter keeps us from living a better life. So what we are going to do through today's topic is share your knowledge that has been missed to be shared or hidden somewhere within you. Is that okay?" I asked them and they nodded with a yes.

"Okay so we raise our hands and say our names. And let me tell you, this topic could go on for days. So to filter it we wouldn't share the same knowledge passed from generation to generation. We could skip that part and stick to the part which needs awareness. And if there comes up a topic which is really not researched up until now, I will help your pack research it and patent it with the council and it definitely will reach humans and other kinds." I told them.

They smiled brightly at my confession. It was true some of their work was yet to be recognised and they needed to be recognised. There were bright minds in the packs too who needed to prove their worth. It brought me happiness wanting to do something for them. I lived with the humans but still in fear of my life. I did not want the others to live the same way when they roamed besides humans, wanting to find their way through life.

Hands were raised one by one. The scent was still messing with me and my wolf but I had to pay attention here. I had to make sure I listened to each and every one of them without getting distracted with the stomach clenching scent that was playing my senses.

Laughing, making notes, growing serious all of a sudden, being surprised and in awe with the knowledge that was being shared we went on with the sessions.

Somewhere around twelve, drinks and food was served with a forty-five minute break. We continued after until around three in the afternoon. I shared the knowledge I gained over the years in the human world.

There were seven-eight of them in the pack who were from far away countries and each country had its own way of treating and ailing. It was a new level of learning.

I took the names of those who had attended the sessions along with their profession in the pack, their work if there was any, if there was something they wanted to do and could not do due to certain reasons and so on.

Every pack in a way had the best knowledge according to me. It felt amazing to learn and teach at the same time. Some of them had lived for hundreds of years, knowing how the field of medicine had changed over the years.

After the informative and tiring session, I came back to the cabin to find Rick watching the news. I quickly freshened up and went back out.

"Did you talk to Logan?" I asked him and he nodded with a tight lipped smile.

"What did he say?" I pried further.

"He said he'd talk to you." Rick replied. "I'll be leaving by six." He told me.

"Yeah, okay. And don't worry, Rick. Also sorry about yesterday. I was just making sure everything here was alright." I knew I had to apologise because it was stupid of me to use my Alpha on him.

"It's no worry. I understand. That's what I told Alpha Logan." He told me.

Oh thank goddess!

"Did you rest well?" I asked him.

"Yahhhhh" He yawned.

Rick left by six in the evening and I was alone to my thoughts again. Thoughts of the damned scent. I needed a run, literally. I just wanted something off of me. But I knew I couldn't.

Villa's daughter, Lyla, joined me for dinner in the pack house kitchen. The scent was high in there and it was bothering me way too much. I didn't know if I could survive another day.

What was the goddess trying to do to me?

I wanted to cry so badly, I wanted to hug someone, I just wanted someone to talk to. I could talk to Logan and Linus but they'd come running down her once they know I had a mate here. Potential or not. They would just march down here. And dad, I could only see a raging Alpha take me away from this place.

I had so many questions.

I face-timed at home and told them everything was okay and they needn't worry. I had to constantly remind myself that I had to plaster a smile on my face, fidgeting here and there so that they wouldn't notice anything.

The next day Villa noticed my uneasiness. "You could talk to the beta. I'm sure he'll understand." She told me.

I nodded and let out a breath. We carried on with the sessions like yesterday. I was happy that the number of people who attended the sessions had increased. This was it. This was hope for the future of our children and their children after that.

The stories I had heard about this pack weren't quiet sitting with me. They looked better, free, happy. My thoughts were drifting back to the Alpha who had his pack at the tip of his fingers. But it was all just the opposite here.

But again the possibility could be because their Alpha wasn't here.

Goddess! I fucking needed a run. I wanted to stop thinking the stupid theories that were manifesting inside my head.

As soon as the sessions were over, Villa took me to the beta. I did not want to step in the pack house again. It had the most of his scent and I knew I wasn't going to be able to make it to another day. I just, I wasn't even understanding what to do.

Beta Eli was in his office when Villa and I entered. I so wanted to run to the destination of the scent at the left end of the floor. My own rules were eating me up to a point where I couldn't think straight. My wolf wasn't helping at all. She kept pushing me to go find the person.

She agreed when I snapped at her, saying she'd wreck my mission. I was stupid enough to be mad at her too. It wasn't her fault but she had to behave and not create chaos in another pack. Villa had already noticed us, we didn't want to gather more attention.

"You wanted to talk to me." Eli asked and I nodded.

"My wolf is quite restless as she hasn't been let out for days. There's a change in weather here and she loves it. I know it doesn't sit in the rules but can I please let her out for a run just for an hour, maybe." I lied to him.

What else was I supposed to say? I had to lie. I had to lie because I didn't simply want them to know.

Eli looked at Villa and asked me to wait. He was linking the others for sure. He knew he couldn't just make decisions like this alone in the absence of his Alpha. He had to be smart because it concerned an outside Alpha.

I waited and kept breathing in the warm summer scent that danced in this place. It was helping us feel warm and safe but at the same time it was killing us because we couldn't find the source of it.

"You can go early in the morning tomorrow so the pack won't get alarmed. Villa will accompany you and there will be warriors around." He told me.

It was better than nothing but I was going to stay alert. I was a damn Alpha and I needed to show them I wasn't scared.

"Fine. Thank you." I said with a smile.

This person whose scent was making me crazy was going to pay for it if he was my mate. My wolf just rolled her eyes.

Such a bitch.
