Chapter 4: Obsidian
I woke to Rose shaking me and yelling impatiently,"Obsidian! Get up!" I sat up and replied sleepily,"What, Rose?" She looked nervous. That's when I noticed five cloaked figures. The cloaks were hooded and were made of some kind of golden fabric. All five figures radiated power.
Rose eyed them suspiciously,"Now, he's awake. So tell us. Who are you and what are you doing here?" I could hear them chuckling in amusement. One of then stepped forward. His voice sounded ancient, yet familiar, when he spoke,"My name is Honor. And we," he gestured towards his comrades,"are Oracles." I looked over at Rose. I expected her to look shocked, but she seemed as if she was expecting it. Instead she just asked,"Honor? What kind of name is that?" I was just about to scold her for being rude when Honor laughed. He pulled of his hood, revealing the face of an old man with no hair but gentle green eyes smiling. He was still laughing when he answered Rose,"Child, Oracles have special names as do their dragons. We receive our Oracle names on what represents our personality or appearence."
That's where I remembered him. I remember Honor taking care of me when I was young. I remember regretting my decision whenever I thought of him. I finally spoke,"Honor? Is it truly you?" The old man looked at me and squinted as if he were deep in thought. He asked,"Obsidian? Are you really Obsidian? You look a lot like him. But I remember Obsidian leaving." I could feel myself getting emotional,"Yes, Honor it is I, Obsidian." He cried out in triumph and ran to embrace me.
I could see Rose watching me sadly, but then she covered it up with a smile. When Honor pulled away he asked me,"Where have you been? Do you know how worried we've been? We thought you were dead!" I glanced at Rose and she nodded. I began to tell the tale of how and why I left, finding this cave, my days before Rose, and then how I came to meet her. Honor's came to Rose,"Yes of course. Now I must tell you why we are here. A new prophecy has been delivered." He began to recite,
"The girl who was beaten and ran away,
Is destined to fight in attempt to save the day.
You will find her in a dragon's cave,
Where she shall make a decision that shall brave.
When the time is right, her wings will appear.
And she shall battle as the end draws near."
With each word Rose's face was overcome with fear.
"But to succeed, she cannot duel alone.
A boy from her past, from her old home,
Shall be retrieved and help her win.
She will once again see her kin.
One she loves will die,
And she will say her final goodbye."
Rose spoke the final lines,
"In the end she will choose,
And it will determine who will win and who will loose."
I glanced at Rose. She held pure terror in her warm brown eyes and was trembling. The Oracles were eyeing her warily as well. I broke the silence,"You know about this?" She nodded. "Why didn't you tell me sooner?" She answered timidly,"I just found out. It was a dream. I was going to wait until you woke to tell you." One of the other Oracles interjected,"I believe I should probably introduce myself." She lifted her hood. She seemed quite young, had long black hair in a braid cascading down her back , and had serious brown eyes that seemed to analyze her surroundings.
"My name is Justice. We did not just come here to tell you the prophecy. We also came to tell you that she," Justice pointed towards Rose,"is a part of it." I the other Oracles, including Honor gazed sympathetically at Rose. She was suddenly very interested in her combat boots and her feet were shuffling nervously. Finally she looked up and questioned,"Why? Just because I live in a dragon's cave?"
An Oracle walked over and grabbed Rose's scarred arm and turned it so that the scar was visible. The Oracle lifted her hood and showed a female face. She had blue eyes and long hair, like Justice, but hers was brown and was loosely draped around her shoulders. She then spoke softly,"My name's Wisdom. And to answer your question, let's look at the evidence. Well for one, you had the dream. Two, you live in the dragon's cave. Three, the prophecy spoke of a girl who was 'beaten and ran away.' I'm not one hundred percent sure if you ran away. I am ninety-nine percent sure though, but this scar make it seem like you really were beaten." Rose glared at her and said,"So what? I was beaten and I live in a dragon's cave. Maybe that dream was a mistake." Wisdom shook her head and replied,"Rose, you know that prophecies don't make mistakes. And I know you're lying to us. My name is Wisdom. It is not very easy to fool me. And there is a fourth reason I have just discovered." I looked at her confused. She noticed my confusion and answered,"Rose, you're glowing."
Wisdom was correct. Rose indeed was glowing. I didn't notice until Wisdom pointed it out. The white glow was painfully bright. I squinted at it. The light kept glowing and getting brighter. Then I heard Rose scream.
