30. Nanami's Death
"Wake up, babe."
Rain opened her eyes slowly from the familiar voice, avoiding to face an unwanted headache that was hammering her head.
Another unwanted subject, though, was lying shirtless and half-covered with sheets next to her.
"What the fuck are you doing here?" She jumped and stunned Sakai on the bed, yelling while turning him to face the mattress, burying his head with force into it, while twisting his arm behind his back, holding him down with her knees, sheets flying around from her fast movements.
"Stop." He yelled in a muffled voice. " I thought it would be funny to scare you." He took a breath while she slowly released him, then literally kicked him out of bed, to fall on the floor with his ass.
"Clearly bad choice." He stood and crossed his arms in front of his bare tattooed chest. "I brought you coffee." He nodded towards the nightstand where a red mug was.
Rain took it without hesitation and laid back at the bedhead. She stopped the mug just millimeters before her lips and looked at Sakai with an interrogating stare.
"Is there sugar in this?" She asked crinkling her nose like the mug could contain poison or tequila, both equally deadly and disgusting for her taste.
"Nope." He grinned at her.
"Oh, thank god." She said and gulped almost half of the mug like it contained a life potion.
The first day there.
The first time she hasn't slept in the loft since she "moved" there.
Last night Sakai told her everything.
This day was competing for the worse day Oscars with the day she passed out after finding out from RM why she was kidnapped, and the day she woke up in V's bed after the "loud dream" combined. Headache-wise and information-wise.
The worst part is that she had a role to play now.
After Sakai monologued everything about his and Suga's life, the truth is she was actually pissed with Suga for hiding the fact that he knew her. And she wanted revenge.
Ok, not to actually kill Suga. But at least mentally torture him to the verge of death for keeping all these secrets from her. With pleasure.
She felt so confused by the whole situation. But again, it wasn't so easy to wrap her head around the fact that Suga was following her for years.
How much did he know about her dark past?
How stupid was she for not seeing this sooner?
But mostly, if he actually knew all those bad things about her, how could he possibly like her?
Since when is he, as Sakai said, in love with her?
A smirk lit her face when a thought occurred.
I'm gonna have so much fun torturing him after this.
Wait.
Who am I kidding?
I'm in love with him too.
"Am I interrupting your daydreaming?" Sakai was looking at her being lost in her thoughts while drinking coffee, with a serious stare, kinda offended for being ignored.
"Are you still here because you want anything in particular?" She replied without looking back at him, just leaving the mug back on the nightstand to get up from the bed and get dressed.
He started laughing arrogantly.
"Stop kidding yourself." He crossed his arms in front of him, managing to get her attention with his words.
"You belong here. Where the original family clan is. Where your family assets belong to. You are supposed to rule here."
"With you by my side coincidentally?" It was her turn to start laughing now, making him serious and angry. But he continued keeping his words under control.
"Is that so bad?" He looked at her with narrow eyes as a scoff escaped his lips. He actually looked hurt.
No, indeed, it wasn't bad.
But it wasn't what Rain wanted. And then she remembered something. From all the hints she had until now, it wasn't what her mother wanted for her either.
"You know what is bad? No, bad is not the right word. It's excruciating!" She started raising her voice to him, and he somehow found it amusing how she took control.
"The fact that I still don't know how my mother died! No one told me! " She shouted with all her energy the morning coffee gave her, then sits back on the bed, silent, starting to get deep in thoughts.
She had figured out that no one talked about it because no one was over it. The matter was too painful for the seven waves.
But not for Sakai.
He went to sit right next to her on the bed as she lighted a cigarette.
Great way to start a morning.
"I would tell you..." He spoke with a comforting tone. "I don't have anything to hide." He narrowed his eyes on hers as she turned to look at him.
"But I don't know." He pressed his lips into a thin line.
"No one knows."
Rain kept staring at him, analyzing every inch of his face as he stayed silent next to her.
"But my father has a theory. He believes Suga killed her."
One month ago.
The hardest rain was pouring, making the night darker, and the streets unclear; only the nightlights were shinning in the docks. Waves were crashing, but the rain was crushing harder on them, a suffocating sound of water taking over the atmosphere.
One black car with tinted windows was still there.
The heavy rain was blocking the view from the car windows.
Blurry white lights showed through them, interrupting the darkness, and the passengers' door opened and closed in seconds, immediately after he entered the car. His hair was dripping on his leather jacket, then following the smooth surface, on the black leather seats, until the water droplets were lost.
She looked at the boy unamused, exhaling the smoke from the cigarette she held between her tattooed fingers.
Ten Japanese letters. One on each finger.
They didn't seem to make any sense.
But he knew they were initials of names.
"Konbanwa oyabun," He stared at Nanami, a clear tone of irony in his voice.
"I see you couldn't wait any longer." She replied apathetically, which enraged him.
"I see no point in waiting." He replied and leaned slightly, his face embracing a smirk as he pulled out his gun, stretching his arm to make the banister come in contact with her right temple.
A thunder crashed nearby, making the windows of the car tremble from the loud throb.
Nanami puts out her cigarette in the car ashtray, after taking the last drag unaffected by the cold metallic weapon that could possibly, any second now, kill her.
She turns slightly, and her stare stabs his dark eyes with her phoenix ones. A barely audible snort came out as she tried to stop herself from laughing out loud.
She grabbed the gun that was pointed at her temple, and with slow moves, without losing her eye contact, her nerve, or her confidence, lowered it in front of her, the razor-thin curves at the corners of her mouth, still upturned.
"Stupid, arrogant chosenjin boy, likes to play with guns."
She smirked to compliment her superiority, revealing a shiny blade on her left hand, which she moved against his throat, making him higher his chin and back up in the seat, frozen and intimidated.
Fear was obvious in his stare. But so was determination.
"Having second thoughts?" She mocked him, her narrow death stare, accompanying her smirk, as the tip of the blade was ready to sink on his throat.
He got lost in her deadly eyes for a second there.
But he had to do it.
"Not really." His words came out low, unconfident, trying to persuade himself as he struggled to move his gun back towards her, regretting that he didn't do it earlier when he had the chance.
And when it was pointing once more towards her, he took advantage of it the same second, by pulling the trigger.
A slight cut started bleeding on his throat, but it was nothing compared to the bullet that ripped through Nanami's chest.
"Any last words?" He smirked over her from the open window before pushing the car from the dock.
The rain was pouring into the car from the window, filling the interior and splashing around on the leather seats.
He looked at her, stunned, as she was still smiling. Her eyes closed.
"Sayonara oyabun," He whispered and pushed the car over the edge.
"No fucking way." Rain shouted, frustrated, after slamming the door behind her.
She was on her way towards Sakai's -and Suga's- father's office.
Cause Fates just loved to tease her all the way.
She forcefully opened the black heavy door, without knocking, shouting, "Everyone out now!" to the rest of the men he was with. They complied with her order without any words, and she took a chair to set it to face forwards the desk he was sitting, before crossing her arms and take the position to face him. Or better, to verbally attack him with questions.
She stares at him for a moment, scanning the hell out of his face, measuring if this man should be trusted or not.
He used to be her mother's right hand, after all.
"Who killed her?" She narrowed her almond stare on his face.
He didn't respond immediately, just adopted a crooked smile and looked down.
A clock on the wall was making every silent second countable by every tick.
"That is for you to find out." he finally responds, but his answer only enlarges the mystery.
"And I hope that you will figure this out." He smiled gently before continuing, "I will help you, I will tell you all the information that I know."
Rain furrowed her brows in confusion as the man's words made her skeptical.
"Cut the crap! Sakai says that you believe Suga killed her." She spoke confidently, making his eyes widen at her words for a moment, but then the smile returned again before he proceeded to solve the mystery.
"You are a smart girl." He grinned like there was a reason that he could be proud of that somehow.
"Spare me the flattery. Did Suga kill her?"
"Sakai told you that cause he wants to make you hate Suga. And also wants you to help him kill Suga."
The smile was still on his lips, but it had turned bitter.
He raised from his chair and walked towards the glass wall, turning his back at her while looking outside, to the sunlit busy city.
"But I don't want any of my sons dead."
He spoke with a firm tone, his expressions hidden.
"Speaking of ..." he turned suddenly to face her again.
"How is Suga?"
The interrogative stare of curiosity he gave her made her think of the last time she saw him.
Still arrogant. Still infuriatingly hot as fuck. Still potential victim no.1 on my kill list.
"Fine." She responded, totally emotionless, even though a bomb had just exploded in the interior of her mind.
This was the mother of all uncomfortable situations.
"To the point." She tried to maintain the conversation's upper hand before he could take the chance to ask more Suga-related questions.
"You say Sakai lied. Who was it then?"
"One of the seven seas." He smirked. "But I don't know who. As I said, you have to figure out this by yourself."
He took a long pause staring at her as she thought about it, and then went back to sit on his desk.
"Or even better, we can kill them all to be sure."
Rain leans back on the chair and crosses her elbows behind her head as she inhales sharply.
"You said that I'm a clever girl, yet you don't treat me like one." Her dead serious stare stabbing him.
"You want to kill two birds with one stone... Get rid of the seven waves, and bring Suga here." She raised her eyebrows, smirking.
"Interesting..."
She closed her eyes and sighed before asking the question the man waited for.
"How are we going to do this?"
